Professional wrestling career
Austin Theory made his debut under the ring name Austin Theory on May 5, 2016, defeating A. R. Fox at a WWA4 event to win the WWA4 Heavyweight Championship. On April 1, 2017, Theory made his Progress Wrestling debut, where he defeated Keith Lee in a four-way match that also involved Jason Kincaid and Blaster McMassive. Theory lost to Mark Haskins in a four-way match involving both Mark Andrews and Keith Lee on August 12. Theory collaborated with Jinny to defeat Will Ospreay and Kay Lee Ray at Chapter 67.
Theory made his World Wrestling Network debut on August 12, 2016 alongside AC Mack at Full Impact Pro (FIP)'s Heatstroke. A. R. Fox defeated Theory in a Style Battle on January 7, 2017. Theory made his Evolve debut at Evolve 78, defeating Darby Allin. Theory defeated Fred Yehi to win the FIP World Heavyweight Championship at Evolve 97. Theory made his Mexican debut for The Crash Lucha Libre on June 16, 2018 by losing to Rey Horus. Theory defeated Willie Mack, Bárbaro Cavernario, and Sansón to win the Crash Heavyweight Championship on March 2, 2019. Theory made his Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre debut on June 14, defeating Rush and La Peste Negra (Bárbaro Cavernario and Negro Casas) on June 14th.

Theory appeared on the show "Underground" on March 30 as an employee of Zelina Vega's Zelina Vega, establishing himself as a heel. Theory was partnered with Angel Garza and Seth Rollins in a losing bid to Kevin Owens and Raw Tag Team Champions The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) On the second night of WrestleMania 36, Theory teamed with Garza to unsuccessfully challenge The Street Profits for the Raw Tag Team Championship. In a rematch for the titles, Raw, Theory, and Garza lost to The Street Profits on Saturday night. Garza and Andrade joined him in beating down Tozawa on April 13, confirming their alliance status as a unit after defeating Akira Tozawa on the 13th episode of Raw. However, Andrade and Garza had mistakenly cost them a tag team match against Apollo Crews and Kevin Owens, kicking him out of the team. Later that night, he assisted Seth Rollins and Murphy in attacking Aleister Black, officially joining Rollins' group as a disciple. However, he did not appear with Rollins and Murphy after the June 22 episode of Raw.
Theory returned to television on the NXT episode on August 26 by interrupting Bronson Reed, bringing the brand's name back to the company. He made his in-ring return on the September 8 episode of NXT, losing to Reed. Following this, Theory would spend the bulk of his time in NXT as a development actor, losing matches to Kushida and Dexter Lumis. The NXT Takeover: WarGames In December 6, Theory defeated Johnny Gargano for his third NXT North American Championship. He then appeared on the NXT show The Way with Gargano, his real life wife Candice LeRae, and Indi Hartwell. Theory received the Future Star of NXT Award on December 30, 2020.
Theory and Gargano qualified in the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic in January 2021, losing to Kushida and Leon Ruff in the first round. Theory aided Gargano in retaining the North American Championship against a variety of opponents over the next few months. Theory continued to withdraw from NXT television until returning to NXT 2.0's premiere on July 20th, seeing Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis in his final NXT appearance.
Theory was created to the Raw brand as part of the 2021 Draft. Theory returned to the brand on the October 4 episode of Raw by destroying Jeff Hardy after his injury to Damian Priest and defeating him in the next two Raw episodes. After Rey Mysterio was injured by Bobby Lashley, Theory was announced as his replacement in the Raw men's team at Survivor Series on November 15. At the festival on November 21, Theory had ruled Sheamus before being dismissed by Jeff Hardy. Theory obtained Cleopatra's Egg from Mr. McMahon in the main event, which McMahon was rewarded with a WWE Championship match against Big E in the main event for "showing intestinal fortitude" on Raw.
After beating Finn Bálor, McMahon gave Theory a spot in the Royal Rumble match on January 17, 2022. Theory entered the match at #3 on January 29, lasting 22 minutes before being stunned by AJ Styles. Theory defeated Kevin Owens in an Elimination Chamber qualifier on January 31 in a Raw 7 episode. Theory lost the WWE Championship on February 19, after being first pinned by Brock Lesnar in a match involving Seth "Freakin" Rollins, AJ Styles, Riddle, and defending champion Bobby Lashley; as the match's conclusion, Lesnar and Theory generated a lot of buzz when Lesnar delivered his final move, the F-5, throwing Theory from the top of one of the Chamber's pods down to the ground, but theory continued to flounder Theory bribed McMahon into assisting him in his interview with Pat McAfee, to no avail. Theory confronted McAfee and revealed that he would be his opponent at WrestleMania 38 this week. Theory lost to McAfee on the second night of the tournament, but McMahon defeated McAfee in the ensuing brawl that ensued right after.
After Theory pinned Bálor, Theory, and The Usos defeated RK-Bro and Finn Bálor, giving him the opportunity to challenge for his title. Theory and Mr. McMahon revealed in a backstage segment the following week that Austin and Mr. McMahon had decided that the name Austin did not suit him anymore, abandoning the first name and going by Theory. Theory won the United States Championship for the first time in his career on April 18; with this victory, he became the second-youngest United States champion and the youngest champion under the WWE banner. Theory retained the title against Mustafa Ali in a Cell on June 5, although she was at Hell in a Cell. Theory lost the United States Championship to Bobby Lashley on July 2, putting an end to his reign at 75 days. He was a player to win the Money in the Bank ladder match that night, as well as being the first Money in the Bank champion to lose a title and win the contract on the same night. Theory failed to regain the United States Championship in a rematch against Lashley at SummerSlam on July 30, 2007. Later that night, he tried to cash in his money in the Bank relationship during the infamous WWE Universal Championship Last Man Standing match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, but Lesnar hit him with an F-5 before he could properly cash in. At Clash at the Castle on September 3, he and Alpha Academy lost to The Street Profits and Madcap Moss in the pre-show, with his ring name changed to Austin Theory.
