Victoria Garance Alixe Legrand (born May 28, 1981) is a French-American musician best known as the lead singer, songwriter, and keyboardist of the dream pop duo Beach House.
Early life
Legrand was born in Paris, France, and the niece and nephew of French composer Michel Legrand and vocalist Christiane Legrand of The Swingle Singers. She spent her youth in Paris until age six when her family immigrated to the United States, first in Baltimore, Maryland, before relocating to rural Cecil County. The family then moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Legrand spent her adolescent and teenage years. She is a natural speaker in both French and English.
Legrand played piano throughout her youth and adolescence, as well as performing in a Led Zeppelin cover band as a teenager. She graduated from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1999, and then attended Vassar College, where she majored in drama. She moved to Paris to study acting at the International Theatre School of Jacques Lecoq after graduating in 2003. She dropped out of the course and returned to the United States after being "disenchanted with theater school" and more interested in songwriting and in musical performers like Le Tigre and Yo La Tengo.
Career
Legrand met Baltimore native Alex Scally, and the pair formed a two-piece band right away. Legrand often discusses how they work together and how she found her "musical soulmate" in Scally. The two have released eight studio albums as Beach House (2006), Devotion (2008), Bloom (2012), Suicide Cherry (2015), Thank Your Lucky Stars (2015), and Twice Melody (2022).
