Alex Scally (born July 15, 1982) is an American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.
He is best known as the co-writer, guitarist, and backing vocalist of the dream pop duo Beach House, with whom he has released seven studio albums.
Early life
Scally was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was raised on July 15, 1982. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 2000 and Oberlin College in 2004, where he concentrated on geology and ran NCAA Division III cross-country. Following his graduation, he and his father went back to Baltimore to work as a carpenter.
Career
Scally and Victoria Legrand formed Beach House in Baltimore in 2004. The two had chosen Baltimore as "a city where people can make music so much because [there] is no obligation] to live [there]. Scally recalled the band's beginnings: "We were just kind of knocking around Baltimore in our early 20s, and we knew we were doing a different musical project, but then [Beach House] sort of grew out of it."
Scally expressed regret for their early performances by saying, "I'm really glad no one came to our shows at the start because we had no idea what we were doing." The company has released eight studio albums as of 2022.
