Early life
Patrick Clark Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., on August 19, 1995.
Professional wrestling career
Clark, a professional wrestler, trained at the Maryland Championship Wrestling training center under Patrick Brink. After four months of preparation under the ring name "Rick Powers," he made his debut for the promotion on October 3, 2014. Clark went on to wrestle for MCW after winning the MCW Tag Team Championship with Lio Rush in October 2015. Clark briefly used the ring name "Slugger Clark" before settling on "Patrick Clark" in February 2016. Clark appeared in numerous American independent television shows throughout 2015, including Combat Zone Wrestling and World Xtreme Wrestling, in addition to serving for MCW.
Clark was selected as a contestant for the sixth season of WWE reality television show Tough Enough, which premiered in June 2015. Despite being selected as one of the favorites to win the tournament, he was kicked out in the fifth episode due to a veiled lack of humility, placing ninth overall in the series.
Clark had signed a developmental contract with WWE as a result of October 17, 2015. At a NXT live event in Lakeland, Florida on February 5, 2016, he made his in-ring debut for the company, losing to Riddick Moss. He made his television debut on NXT's July 20 episode, losing to Austin Aries. Clark confronted and criticised NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura on October 19, but Nakamura struck and defeated him. Clark returned and secured his first televised victory on the NXT's March 1, 2017 episode, defeating Sean Maluta.
Clark began appearing in weekly vignettes on May 3, 2017, debuting a new Prince-inspired character named Velveteen Dream. On the May 24 episode of NXT, he made his debut as a heel, defeating Robert Anthony. Dream interrupted Aleister Black on the September 20 episode of NXT, where he continued to stalk and hound him in order for him to understand Dream and mention his name. Dreams were defeated in a match at NXT Takeover: WarGames. Dream was supposed to face Kassius Ohno in a qualifier match for the NXT Championship's final four ways, but, unfortunately, a back injury kept Dreamer out of action, and Johnny Gargano, who defeated Ohno and then became the top-four contender on the December 6 episode, was not supposed to compete.
Dream interrupted Gargano for 20 minutes to defeat Ohno, saying that he should have killed him in "30 seconds tops" on January 10, 2018. Dream was confronted backstage by Ohno, who shoved him into a wall, sparking a feud on January 24. Dreams Over NXT: Dream defeated Ohno in Philadelphia. Dream took over: Dreams in a variety of TakeOvers, including NXT Takeover: Chicago II, which was won by Adam Cole) during the rest of 2018, and at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IV, he defeated EC3.
Dream began a feud with NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa after Dream accused him of attacking Aleister Black, thereby turning face in the process. On November 17, he failed to capture the NXT Championship from Ciampa at NXT Takeover: WarGames. Dream, a dream, fought Tony Nese in the first round, Jordan Devlin in the semifinals, and Tyler Bate in the final on February 2, 2019 in the NXT or NXT UK brands.
Dream made the challenge for the NXT North American Championship, which was won by Johnny Gargano. Dream defeated Gargano to win the title on the February 20 episode of NXT, his first championship win in WWE. Dream defeated Matt Riddle to keep the championship, giving Riddle his first defeat in NXT. He continued to defend the title against opponents such as Buddy Murphy, Tyler Breeze, Roderick Strong, and Pete Dunne over the next weeks. On the 'Undisputed Age's' September 18 episode of NXT, Roderick Strong lost the title to Roderick Strong after being influenced from The Undisputed Age, bringing his reign to an end. It was the longest reign in the sport's history.
After recovering from a back injury, he returned to NXT's February 5, 2020 episode to begin The Undisputed Age. Dream In Your House: Dream defeated Adam Cole in the NXT Championship in a Backlot Brawl but ended up disqualified, and Dream could no longer challenge for the title if Cole was still champion. Dream returned to NXT on August 12, where he defeated Cameron Grimes in a triple threat match involving Kushida after several months off after a car accident. Dream struck Kushida after the match, putting the effort into reverse gear. Finn Bálor defeated him in a ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship at NXT Takeover: XXX. Dream did not win the title at the tournament. Dream was defeated by Kushida in NXT TakeOver 31. Dream was defeated by Adam Cole in what would be his last WWE appearance on December 23. After five months of inactivity, Dream was released from his WWE contract on May 20, 2021.
