Umaga Life

Edward Smith Fatu (March 28, 1973-2009) was an American Samoan professional wrestler best known for his time with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) under the ring name Umaga. He was a member of the Anoa? family, the most prominent Samoan wrestling family.

During his first stint with WWE as Jamal, he was a member of team 3-Minute Warning, alongside his cousin Matt Anoa?i, who was billed as Rosey.

In June 2003, he was fired from work.

Fatu returned to WWE in April 2006 under the ring name Umaga.

Fatu went undefeated on the Raw brand for many months during the first month of 2006, before losing their first match in January 2007.

In July 2007, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time, and won it for the second time in July 2007.

Early life

Fatu was born on March 28, 1973 to Vera and Solofa Fatu, Sr. Fatu, Sr. Fatu, was a member of the Anoai family. Vera, his mother, was the niece of Afa and Sika of The Wild Samoans. Sam (The Tonga Kid) and Solofa (Rikishi) are two older brothers who are also pros wrestlers; He was also the uncle of The Usos, Solo Sikoa, and he was a cousin of many top wrestlers, including Yokozuna, The Rock, Rosey, and Roman Reigns. Fatu was reported to have received somatotropin, a growth hormone, between July and December 2006, shortly after the "no drugs from online sources" rule was introduced. Fatu broke the Wellness Policy for the second time in June 2009,; he was suspended from his WWE service due to his mismanagement and refusal to attend drug therapy.

Umaga Career

Professional wrestling career

Fatu and his cousin Matt Anoayo attended the Wild Samoan pro wrestling academy run by members of their family. Fatu debuted in his uncle Afa's World Xtreme Wrestling (WXW) promotion in 1995, with his preparations complete.

Fatu, along with his cousin Matt, signed developmental contracts with the World Wrestling Association (WWF), a youth wrestling team, and Fatu used the term Ekmo to describe Fatu's sport. They won the HWA Tag Team Championship in November 2001 by defeating Evan Karagias and Shannon Moore. They also competed for Memphis Championship Wrestling (MCW), winning the MCW Southern Tag Team Championship on three occasions.

Fatu (renamed to Jamal) and Anoai (renamed to Rosey) made their first appearance on Raw as 3-Minute Warning, a pair of villainous thugs. They were hired as enforcers of Eric Bischoff's every week, after Bischoff either gave people three minutes to entertain him before they were threatened or decided that three minutes of a segment was enough before the team appeared to end it. Several wrestlers were assaulted at Bischoff's orders, including D'Lo Brown and Shawn Stasiak. Lilian Garcia, ring announcer Lilian Garcia, and former wrestlers Jimmy Snuka, Mae Young, and The Fabulous Moolah were also assaulted non-wrestlers. They were most notable at a concert in which two lesbians were attacked. 3-Minute Warning became a feud with Billy and Chuck, who were both involved in their storyline commitment ceremony and losing them at the Unforgiven pay-per-view festival in September. During this period, Rico, Billy and Chuck's former boss, also started to handle 3-Minute Warning. Jamal gained a reputation for being irresponsible in the ring, injuring several celebrities, prompting WWE to discipline him for being chastised for being on the receiving end of a Stink Face by his real-life brother Rikishi during the Royal Rumble match. Fatu was cut from his WWE deal in June 2003, just shy of a year, with the team's founder apparently being suspended from his service in a bar fight.

Fatu debuted in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) under the ring name Ekmo Fatu, helping Sonny Siaki beat D'Lo Brown in a casket match on September 10, 2003. He then formed a tag team with Siaki. He worked with Sonny Siaki, Danny Doring, and Roadkill to defeat Shark Boy and Mad Mikey's teams, as America's Most Wanted from October to August 2004. Fatu appeared on the final of the NWA-TNA PPV on August 11, 2004, where he lost to Alex Shelley.

Fatu debuted in All Japan Pro Wrestling in November 2003 under his old wrestling name Jamal, quickly aligning himself with Taka Michinoku's Roughly Obsess and Destroy (R.O.D.). The situation is stable. He was most often partnered with Taiyuka and Buchanan, but as a singles wrestler in early 2004, he began to gain traction. He didn't make it to the national level this year, but he did win by surprise over Keiji Mut, who was still awaiting for the big surprise. He started a feud with Toshiaki Kawada in May, aiming for the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship in Kawada. On June 12 in Nagoya, Aichi, where Kawada emerged victorious, the two battled for the belt. Jamal spent the majority of 2004 focusing on the tag division, and on December 1, 2004, he and his faithful friend Taiy Kea won the World's Best Tag Determination League tournament, defeating Kaz Hayashi and Satoshi Kojima in the final. For the first time since winning the World Tag Team Championship for the first time, defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi and Yutaka Yoshie of New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) representatives. Following his victory, he was pushed into the final of that year's Champion Carnival, winning big prizes over well-known names like Kawada and Kojima on his way to the final, where he lost to Kensuke Sasaki in Tokyo. Jamal began to win against champion Satoshi Kojima in August, culminating in a match between the two teams in Sapporo on September 1 where Jamal was once more defeated. After this, he and Kea joined the Real World Tag League for the second time, but they were unable to progress beyond the group stages. Jamal joined All Japan Pro Wrestling in December 2005.

Fatu had re-signed with World Wrestling Entertainment in December 2005. Fatu returned to Raw on April 3, 2006 with the same name of the final and most painful part of the Samoan tattooing process, as "the end" is described as a violent savage who could only be controlled by his manager, Armando Alejandro Estrada. In his first appearance at Estrada's orders, Umaga assaulted Ric Flair. He then beat Flair at Backlash on April 30.

Umaga began winning streaks against the majority of the Raw roster in mid-2006, including the appearance of top performers John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H. For the next two months, Umaga feuded with Kane until Umaga triumphed in a Loser Leaves Raw match on October 9, sending Kane off the brand. Umaga and Kane had one final match at Cyber Sunday, where Umaga defeated Kane after being separated by various brands.

Umaga was now ranked the number one contender for the WWE Championship after being still not pinned, putting the series in a squabble with then-champion John Cena over the title. Cena maintained his belt at the New Year's Revolution pay-per-view by pinning Umaga, snapping his undefeated streak, which had spanned 34 televised matches and spanned from his debut in April 2006 to January 2007. Umaga was never bound or made to appear on television, but he suffered two sets of disqualification and another in a double countout at that time. Armando Alejandro Estrada dismissed Cena's victory, claiming it was a fluke until a Last Man Standing rematch was scheduled for the Royal Rumble. Umaga says he assaulted Cena causing a serious burn in his spleen, putting the game in jeopardy. Cena refused a medical examination, the results of which may have caused him to forfeit his position, followed Umaga at the Royal Rumble after wrapping a loosened ring rope around his neck during an STFU.

Umaga was named Vince McMahon's representative for "Battle of the Billionaires" on February 19 at WrestleMania 23 with Donald Trump. McMahon immediately won a match against Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy, who went on to win the Intercontinental Championship. The two men became feud even after Bobby Lashley was named Trump's ambassador, extending well beyond WrestleMania. Umaga lost the Battle of the Billionaires' hair versus hair competition and made McMahon's head shaven. Lashley appeared in a match and helped a planted fan, Santino Marella, defeat Umaga for the Intercontinental Championship on April 16th. Shane McMahon and Backlash, Umaga, Vince, and Shane McMahon competed in a Handicap tournament, winning the ECW World Championship for Vince. Umaga will continue to be involved with the feud after losing in a rematch for the ECW World Championship, which was also a Handicap match between the McMahons and Lashley, which Lashley defeated. However, Lashley did not win the ECW World Championship because he pinned Shane and not Vince, not the champion. Vince helped Umaga defend the ECW World Championship against Lashley in a Street Fight, which Vince lost.

Umaga was re-entered into a feud with Marella in June. Umaga was clearly in control of the match when they met at the Vengeance pay-per-view, but disqualification ensued when he disregarded the referee's instructions and continued to punch Marella. Umaga defeated Marella for the second time in a match on Raw's July 2 episode. Not long after, he turned face against Carlito and Randy Orton. He interrupted a match between Kennedy and the returning Jeff Hardy on Raw, bringing Hardy to the ring after losing to Mr. Kennedy in a triple threat match at SummerSlam, leaving him dead inside. Umaga lost the Intercontinental Championship to Hardy one week later on September 3 of Raw.

Later that night, he teamed with Carlito in a handicap match against Triple H, after which Triple H struck him several times with his signature sledgehammer. At No Mercy, he was given a match against Triple H, which was changed to a title match for the WWE Championship during the case when Triple H claimed the tournament earlier this night. In their match, Umaga was defeated by Triple H. In a Survivor Series match, his crew lost to Triple H's side. Umaga began a feud with Batista but was defeated by him at WrestleMania.

Umaga was drafted to the SmackDown brand as a part of the 2008 WWE draft on June 23, 2008. On August 2, Umaga suffered a torn PCL at a live function in Johnson City, Tennessee. On the January 30, 2009 episode of SmackDown, Umaga revived with a new entrance theme, defeating Jimmy Wang Yang. Umaga's first defeat since his return to Triple H was disqualified on the March 6 episode of SmackDown, after The Legacy brought Punk's attempts to cash in in the Bank briefcase. Umaga beat Punk on Judgment Day but lost to Punk at Extreme Rules in a Samoan Strap match, bringing an end to the feud between the two teams in what was Umaga's last appearance in WWE. Fatu was fired from his WWE contract on June 8, 2009, WWE confirmed it on June 8. His dismissal was later revealed to be due to a misreadiness of the Wellness Policy; even though this was his second attempt, his refusal to return to rehabilitation resulted in his dismissal.

Umaga defeated Mr. Anderson in a singles match on July 11, 2009, beating him at the World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico. Umaga appeared on the Hulk Hogan's Hulkamania Tour of Australia four months ago. Umaga defeated Rikishi and Brian Christopher in November 21, 2009, when they joined Orlando Jordan to lose against his brother Rikishi and Brian Christopher. Umaga defeated Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake on November 24, 2009, beating the Barber" Beefcake. Umaga and Orlando Jordan were defeated by Beefcake and Mr. Anderson on November 26, 2009. Umaga lost in their last match on November 28, 2009, losing to Anderson.
