Early life
Tiger JK (Seo Jung-kwon) was born in Seoul, South Korea, on July 29, 1974. Suh Byung Hoo, a producer and one of the first Korean pop columnists and the first Billboard correspondent in Korea in the 1970s, was his father. When he was 12, his family was sent to Miami, Florida, where he trained Taekwondo, becoming a 3rd "dan" black belt.
He spent his youth in Los Angeles, California, where he attended Glendale Hoover High School in Glendale, CA. During the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, Tiger JK witnessed the brutality between Korean-Americans and African-Americans. He later said he wanted to create a dialogue between the two groups by using hip hop.
Tiger JK attended Santa Monica College and then went to UCLA and obtained a B.A. The Creative Writing program offers a degree in English.
Personal life
In Korea, Tiger JK was arrested for using methamphetamine in 2000, just as members of the Korean hip hop band Uptown were arrested on drug charges. Tiger JK said that although he had used drugs in the past, he did not use them in Korea, and that he was found guilty due to misleading evidence from Uptown members. He spent a month and a half in jail and was given two years probation.
In 2006, Tiger JK was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis, a spinal cord disorder that affects motor function. He was hospitalized and went on a two-year absence from performing. He continued to take medications to manage his illness as of 2014, as well as other ailments.
In June 2007, Tiger JK married rapper and singer Yoon Mi-rae in a private ceremony in a Buddhist Temple. The wedding took place a month before his grandmother's death, so she wanted to see them wed before they died. In March 2008, Yoon gave birth to their son, Jordan, on their first birthday.
Musical career
Tiger JK's first solo album, Enter the Tiger, was released in Korea by Oasis Records in 1995, a link that Tiger JK had made in Korea because his father was friends with the company's CEO. Due to its apparent explicit content, the album received no airplay.
Tiger JK returned to the United States and formed the Drunken Tiger group in 1998 with DJ Shine. Despite the explicit content of their songs and the group's rejection of mainstream music trends, they released Year of the Tiger, which featured hits such as "I Want You" and "Do You Know Hip-hop."
Drunken Tiger introduced new artists and released several albums, garnering numerous accolades over the years. DJ Shine, the founding member of the group, left the organization in 2005.
Tiger JK left Oasis Records and founded Jungle Entertainment, his own hip-hop group. Drunken Tiger, as well as well-known Korean rappers Yoon Mi-rae and Leessang were among the artists to join the label over the next two years.
Tiger JK began to perform with Drunken Tiger over the next two years, as well as collaborating with other musicians. He appeared on "Let This Diege," a single by Brian Joo of R&B's Fly to the Sky, in 2012. He appeared on "Wicked," a song by new k-pop girl group Fiestar, the same year.
