Career
Da Brat's big break came in 1992 after she won the grand prize in a local rap competition sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. Kris Kross, the teen rap group, was selected for the grand prize. They introduced Jermaine Dupri, who subsequently signed her to his So So Def label, a female artist. Funkdafied, Da Brat's debut album, debuted in 1994 and ranked 11th on the rap albums chart. The album reached platinum, making her the first female solo performer to sell one million copies. The single "Funkdafied" debuted at number 1 on the rap singles chart and ranked sixth on the Billboard Hot 100. "Give It 2 You," the follow-up single from the same album, debuted at number 26 on the Hot 100.
Da Brat's second full-length album, Anuthatantrum, featured T-Boz of TLC's "Ghetto Love" on the single. Da Brat became well-known for her "featured" appearances on other rappers' and R&B singers' albums rather than for her own solo performances during the 1990s. Da Brat appeared on the title track of their album Da Bomb (1993), as well as on their third album Young, Rich, Dangerous (1996). "Always Be My Baby" (1996), Mariah Carey's hit, "Always Be My Baby," she wrote a rhyme. Shaquille O'Neal made her debut in Kazaam (1996) that year. She and Dupri appeared on the remix of Dru Hill's hit "In My Bed" in 1997. Da Brat's third full-length album Unrestricted, which resulted in the moderately popular singles "That's What I'm Looking For" and "What'chu Like" (U.S. number 261) starring soul singer Tyrese and Soul singer Timese in early 2000, as well as a somewhat successful single "What I'm Looking For" (U.S. number 56). Compared to Brat's earlier works, the album was not well-received. However, the new album and new millennium did give Da Brat's image makeover. Abandoning her "gangsta" persona, she decided to go with the trend in popular music and tried to add to her sex appeal. Brat continued her trend of appearing on other artist's remixes, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart alongside rapper Ludacris on Mariah Carey's "Loverboy" remix and being a featured artist on Destiny's Child's "Survivor" remix in 2001. In Carey's 2001 film Glitter, Da Brat appeared as Louise. Brat's third album, titled Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz, appeared on Billboard's Billboard rhythmic, peaking at n°9 on the Billboard rhythmic, peaking at n°9. When she was included on Dem Franchize Boyz' remix of "I Think They Like Me," she made a comeback of sorts.
