Shreya Ghoshal (born 12 March 1984) is an Indian playback singer. "Bairi Piya" was a huge success and topped the charts.

For "Dola Re" (shared with Kavita Krishnamurthy) and a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Bairi Piya), the film earned her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

The Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent was also given to her. She was a hit on the ground, and several regional film companies had been contacted to record songs in her voice.

Ghoshal was next seen on film in Darbar-composed Desh Devi, where she appeared on three tracks for the film, preventing her from being stereotyped.

Early and personal life

Shreya Ghoshal was born in Murshidabad, West Bengal state, on March 12, 1984. She grew up in Rawatbhata, a little town near Kota, Rajasthan. Bishwajit Ghoshal, a retired electrical engineer and consultant for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, and Sarmistha Ghoshal, her mother, is a literature scholar. Soumyadeep Ghoshal, she has a younger brother. She began learning music at the age of four.

Ghoshal completed her education at the Atomic Energy Central School No. 4 in Rawatbhata, where she was a classmate of the current CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawal. She won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition, New Delhi, organized by Sangam Kala Group, in 1995 at a subjunior level. She and her family were relocated to Mumbai in 1997, when her father was transferred to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Bhabha, and studied at the Atomic Energy Central School in Anushakti Nagar. She began studying science at the Atomic Energy Junior College. She dropped out of junior college and enrolled at SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai, where she majored in English.

Starting with mainly Bengali songs, Ghoshal's mother used to help her with rehearsals and accompanying her on the Tanpura. Ghoshal began her classical music training at the age of six. Late Kalyanji Bhai's training lasted 18 months and then continued her classical music studies with Late Mukta Bhide in Mumbai. This was her first appearance at a club's annual function. She started learning in Hindustani classical music when she was six years old. On the television show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) in 2000, she appeared and won the television music reality competition Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) at the age of 16.

Ghoshal's childhood friend, Shiladitya Mukhopadhyaya, married her in a traditional Bengali ceremony on February 5th, 2015. Ghoshal dated him for almost ten years before getting married. "Ganraj Rangi Nachato," Ghoshal's first recorded song, is a cover version of a Marathi song performed by Lata Mangeshkar. Bendhechhi Beena's first studio album was released on January 1, 1998, with 14 tracks. O Tota Pakhi Re, Ekti Katha (1999), and Mukhor Porag (2000) are two of her earlier albums. Ghoshal's album Rupasi Raate, a Bengali studio album, was released in 2002. Ghoshal has released devotional songs on albums like Banomali Re (2002) and then Krishna Bina Ache Ke (2007).

When she appeared in the 75th children's special episode of Sa Re Ga Ma, she attracted the attention of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. During Bhansali's appearance, she was watching her film, and she asked him to attend her appearance, which caused him to be screened in his next film. Ghoshal's voice, according to Bhansali, was lacking the innocence for the character of Paro in Devdas (2002).

However, he was "impressed" by Ghoshal's performance in Khakee, where he said that his voice complements Aishwarya Rai to the "core" and that "lends credibility to the entire song" in "Wada Raha." Nadeem–Shravan's album Tumsa Nahin Dekha: A Love Story was considered to be the best album for Ghoshal at the time, with the exception of one song. In the album, she performed a wide variety of songs, ranging from a jazzy number to soft romantic tunes. The album allowed her to "experiment with the full range" of her "singing capabilities," according to Ghoshal. After that, she lent her voice to films like Bachna Ae Haseeno, God Tussi Great Ho, Welcome to Sajjanpur, Kidnap, Karzzzz, Ek Vivaah, and others. She was nominated for singing "Pherari Mon" for Bengali film Antaheen (2008) and "Jeev Rangla" for the Marathi film Jogwa (2008). She sang "Tere Mast Do Nain" in 2010 with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sonu Nigam's "Chori Kiya Re Jiya" with Sonu Nigam. "The biggest attraction of this song, according to a music review published by Planet Bollywood, is Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal's duet, who remark on why they are among the top singers of their generation."

She made her debut in Tamil cinema through the song "Yen Chellam" in Vasanthabalan's film Album (2002), and she earned fame after performing "Munbe Vaa" from Sillunu Oru Kaadham under composer A. R. In 2011, Ghoshal performed hit duet song "Saibo" in film Shor in the City with Tochi Raina, a Sachin–Jigar composition. "Sweetly toned and mesmerized with mellifluent flows of Shreya Ghoshal's performance, the first outing "Saibo" is a pleasant surprise that brings romanticism to a new degree," Satyajit from Glamsham's report. In film Bodyguard with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan later this year, Ghoshal sang the duet "Teri Meri" during his time in film Bodyguard. The song, which was created by Himesh Reshammiya, received warm to mixed reviews. The song was described as "moderately paced and average" by NDTV. In the duet "Ooh La La" from film The Dirty Picture, the actress collaborated with Bappi Lahiri. Glamsham's Abid commented that ghoshal manage to keep up the fun pace with an improvised and highly entertaining set. Ghoshal's songs "Saibo" and "Teri Meri" received further two nominations this year at Filmfare Awards.

Ghoshal performed in 2012 as the voice of a well-known item song, "Chikni Chameli" from film Agneepath. The song was produced by Ajay-Atul and was a recreation of their own Marathi song "Kombdi Palali" from film Jatra. "A special word for Shreya Ghoshal too, who alters her singing style in a big way and comes up trumps," Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama said. She has a rich, rustic flavor that was timeless and is absolutely flawless in her interpretation." Ghoshal received one of the year's two Filmfare Awards for the song. She later admitted that she "wasn't very comfortable" singing the song due to its vulgar lyrics and begged for the designers to change few words in it. She appeared on four songs in the same year, all composed by Sajid-Wajid for film Rowdy Rathore, which attracted mixed reviews from critics. "Shreya Ghoshal sings "Dhang Dhang" in her version, as Ghoshal's debut "Dhadang Dhang" performed alongside Sajid, Devesh Sharma of Filmfare said, "Shreya Ghoshal performs "Chandaniya" and insists that she is a singer for all occasions." "Shreya Ghoshal can adapt to any situation as per the circumstances," Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama said in relation to "Chandaniya." Music critics mixed the album "Tera Ishq Bada Teekha." Ghoshal lent her voice to "Radha" from Student of the Year, alongside Udit Narayan, Vishal Dadlani, and Shekhar Ravjiani, which received critical acclaim. She worked with A.R. once more in the same year. Together with Mohit Chauhan, Rahman is the director of a duet song "Saans" from film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Critics also gave the album highly praised. Saans' song "Most Romantic Song of the Year 2012" was chosen at a poll conducted by Indiatimes. Ghoshal received her second of her two Filmfare nominations of the year for the song.

For film Himmatwala, Ghoshal performed two duet songs, "Naino Mein Sapna" and "Taki O Taki" in early 2013. The songs were originally composed by Bappi Lahri and re-created by Sajid–Wajid. Both albums received raves from music critics. "Shreya sounds tailormade for the job," critics of NDTV's "Naino Mein Sapna" commented, and "Ghoshal maintains her mettle in the industry" as "Ghoshal reveals yet another time." "Shreya Ghoshal retaliate Lata Mangeshkar and do a good job" for "Naino Mein Sapna," Shivi from Komoi wrote. In Aashiqui 2 composed by Ankit Tiwari and written by Sandeep Nath, Ghoshal performed the female version of Sunn Raha Hai. Ankit Tiwari, who performed the male version of the song, earned critical laud. In Raanjhanaa, Ghoshal lent her voice for duet "God, Allah aur Bhagwan" alongside Sonu Nigam. Banarasiya received largely favorable feedback, although the former received mixed reactions. She also performed vocals for the original Tamil duet "Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal" with Haricharan, in addition to a Haricharan's "Tu Chale" in Hindi. "Poolane Kunukeyamantaa" in Telugu is the Telugu version. Criticals were generally favorable about the original Tamil version's "Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal," with the majority of commentators lauding Ghoshal's vocals. Nicy V.P. "Ghoshal's brilliant contribution to it, as well as the more tolerant configuration makes it more effective." Ghoshal performed the female version of "Gaye Jaa" for the film Brothers, which were released by Ajay–Atul and received raves from music critics. "Shreya Ghoshal gets brownie points for her performance," the Times of India reported. Glamsham praised Ghoshal's vocals, calling them "sugary sweet and superbly controlled." "Shreya Ghoshal delights the listener by making this situational song such a delightful listener, but one must keep this song on a loop" in Bajirao Mastani in the same year.

In the film, she appeared on three songs, including "Mohe Rang Do Laal," "Deewani Mastani" and "Pinga." In addition, she dubbed these songs in Tamil and Telugu versions of the film's soundtrack. The qawwali interlude song "Deewani Mastani" in the film won her her sixth Filmfare Award and fifth for Best female playback singer.

In early 2016, Ghoshal performed duet "Tere Bin" from film Wazir alongside Sonu Nigam. Critics were thrilled when Shantanu Moitra composed the song and written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Chithra's 2001 film Tum Bin sung and composed by Nikhil-Vinay. The song was praised in spite of poor feedback. Ghoshal performed the songs "Mere Aankhon Se Nikle Aansoo" and "Ishq Ki Baarish," written by Sameer and composed by Nadeem Saifi in the film Ishq Forever, which critics likened the singers' comparison of Ghoshal's singing style to veteran singer Alka Yagnik. "Shreya create magic in [the song], which is straight from the heart, in the song "Mere Aankhon Se Nikle Aansoo." The Times of India said in the article "Mere Aankhon Se Nikle Aansoo." In the Marathi film Sairat made by Ajay-Atul, Ghoshal performed vocals for song "Aatach Baya Ka Baavarla" which was well received by critics. In the song "Jab Tum Hote Ho" from film Rustom, Ghoshal's collaboration with Ankit Tiwari was well-reced. Devesh Sharma of Filmfare characterized the album as "sombre" and lauded the singer's use of Ghoshal's "melodious" voice in the film. In the film Devi, Ghoshal's vocals were rendered for the song "Rang Rang Rangoli."
