Alka Yagnik (born 20 March 1966) is an Indian playback singer.

She is noted in Indian cinema for a career spanning over three decades.

She holds a record of being the only nominee in the category of Female Playback Singer, as in the year 1994 she had three solo nomination and the fourth one was with Ila Arun. She is a record seven-time winner from a record of 36 nominations of the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, a two-time recipient of the National Film Award as well as several other music awards and honours listed below.

Further, as many as twenty of her tracks feature in BBC's "Top 40 Bollywood Soundtracks of all time" review.

She is one of prolific female playback singer who has sung maximum number of female solos in her Bollywood career..

Early life

Yagnik was born in Kolkata on 20 March 1966 to a Gujarati family. Her father's name is Dharmendra Shankar. Her mother Shubha was a singer of Indian classical music. In 1972 at age six, she started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio), Calcutta. At age 10, her mother brought her to Mumbai as a child singer. She was advised to wait until her voice matured, but her mother remained determined. On a subsequent visit, Yagnik got a letter of introduction to Raj Kapoor from his Kolkata distributor. Kapoor heard the girl and sent her with a letter to noted music director Laxmikant. Impressed, Laxmikant gave her two alternatives – an immediate start as a dubbing artist or a later break as a singer; Shubha chose the latter for her daughter. Yagnik mentioned that she was a bright student but didn't like studies.

Yagnik married Shillong-based businessman Neeraj Kapoor in 1989, with whom she has a daughter named Syesha.

At the age of six, a classically trained Yagnik began singing bhajans for Akashvani (All India Radio), Calcutta. In (1980), she sang of Payal Ki Jhankaar's debut. The song "Mere Angane Mein" by Laawaris (1981) was followed by the film Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She got her first break with the film Tezaab (1988)'s song "Ek Do Teen." On the day she registered "Ek Do Teen," she has said she had a high fever. The song was selected first out of seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In addition to performing 15 Pakistani songs, she has performed in more than twenty-five languages. Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Manipuri, Manipuri, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Telugu; She has appeared in live concerts around the world. Yagnik revealed in a Mid-Day interview that she listens to five songs every day during her time.

With Ila Arun, Yagnik performed a seductive song "Choli Ke Peeche Hai" in 1993. Anand Bakshi's lyrics caused uproar. Ila Arun was given her second Filmfare award for the song.

With co-singer Kumar Sanu and Ila Arun, she performed another seductive song "Din Mein Leti Hai" from the film Amanaat in 1994, composed by Bappi Lahiri and lyrics by Anwar Sagar. She also performed the female version of the song with Ila Arun, in addition to the duet version. She has appeared in several performances with Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Throughout the 1990s, Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, and Poornima performed the majority of the songs for heroines.

In 1997, Yagnik appeared on "Tum Yaaye" in close collaboration with award-winning lyricist Javed Akhtar and composer Raju Singh, as well as singer and guitarist Hariharan and singer Shankar Mahadevan. She has appeared on the Hanuman Chalisa and other devotional songs. In the song "Hindi Sad Diamonds" from Moulin Rouge's soundtrack, she sang "Chamma" from China Gate.

She performed 'Shiksha Ka Suraj' with Sonu Nigam as part of India's National Literacy Mission for Women, which she was lauded by Union Minister For Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal in 2012. In a survey conducted by DesiMartini, Hindustan Times, and Fever 104, she also voted "Taal Se Taal Mila" from the movie Taal in 2012. In addition, a Sanona poll showed that her album "Choli Ke Peeche" from Khalnayak was named as the century's best song of the century.

Yagnik has also been active in various initiatives to educate girls. In 2014, Yagnik teamed up with Sonu Nigam to perform "Phool Khil Jayenge" for child health education. For the album Women's Day Special: Spreading Melodies Everywhere, she performed "Maine Li Jo Angdai" as a singer. It was designed by Farid Sabri, Harish Chauhan, and Gurudatt Sahil, and Sudhakar Sharma.

She sang 'Agar Tum Saath Ho' in 2015, for which she told A.R., the song's music director, that she accompanied the song. Rahman was not in the studio, but he was giving instructions on Skype video call, and after giving some instructions, he gave Yagnik the freedom to perform in the song 'Agar Tum Saath Ho'.

Asha Bhosle (seven) received the most Filmfare Awards in a female playback artist's name, according to Yagnik. In 1,114 films, she has performed 2,486 Hindi songs. After Asha Bhosle (7886 songs), Mohammed Rafi (7405 songs), Lata Mangeshkar (5596 songs), and Kishore Kumar (2,707 songs), she is the fifth most popular Bollywood singer of all time. After Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle, who have performed the most female solos in her Bollywood career, she is the third best female playback singer after Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.
