Sadhana Sargam (born 7 March 1969) is an Indian singer best known for her playback in Indian cinema.

She is a recipient of the National Film Award and Filmfare Awards in South Carolina.

She has also received five Maharashtra State Film Awards, four Gujarat State Film Awards, and the Government of Madhya Pradesh has also given the 'Lata Mangeshkar Award'.

Early life

Sargam was born in Dabhol, the seaport town in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri District. Neela Ghanekar, a classical singer and piano instructor, knew arranger-composer Anil Mohile, who later arranged music for Kalyanji-Anandji. In "Pam Pararampam, Bole Jeevan Ki Sargam," sung by Kishore Kumar in G. P. Sippy's Trishna (1978), he introduced Sargam to them, and she was in the children's chorus. Sargam appeared at the Sawai Gandharva festival at the age of 4.

At the age of 6, she performed Ek Anek Aur Ekta for Doordarshan. Vasant Desai composed the song. "My parents paid me for the recording," Sargam said about her memory of performing the song. I can't recall much of it. When I hear it now, it seems very strange." Sargam studied at the A.M. In Goregaon, Mumbai, B. Goregaonkar English School is a premier English school.

She received a Central Government scholarship at the age 10, which culminated in a seven-year education stint under Pandit Jasraj. She was already studying and performing with Vasant Desai for his documentaries, children's films, and stage shows from childhood. Desai advised her mother that Sargam was capable of handling both classical and light music, and that she should keep in touch with both classical and light music as her mother wanted her to avoid performing. In fact, it was Desai who suggested that she study under Pandit Jasraj.

Sargam made her playback debut in Kanku Pagli, a Gujarati film. "Door Nahin Rehna" by her first Hindi song from the film Rustom was her first Hindi song. However, Rustom was postponed and was only published in 1985, and Sargam's first film, "Saat Saheliyan," for actress Padmini Kolhapure, was released in 1985. Kishore Kumar and Alka Yagnik were also featured on the song, which was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Sargam continued to perform in films such as Taqdeer, Pighalta Aasmaan, Raj Tilak, Karishma Kudrat Ka (in which she was the only female singer), but it was only after "Har Kisiko Nahin Milta" (Janbaaz 1986) that she was noticed.

Sargam received her first Star Screen Award for her film "Chupke Se Lag Ja Gale" from Saathiya. "Aao Na" from "Ko Gaya Na." earned Filmfare, IIFA, Star Screen, GIFA, Apsara awards, Zee Cine Award, Star Screen Award, and Stardust Best Playback Singer Female Award nomination. In 2003, she received the prestigious Zee Cine Award in Dubai for "Halki Mulaqate Thi" from Kuch Na Kaho. She is India's only playback singer who currently performs in 27 Indian languages. She received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer from Thankar Bachan's cult classic film Azhagi; the music was by maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who has been lauded time and again for "giving her such a beautiful song and making her eligible for the National Award."

Sargam performed many songs in Hindi and Odia for music director Kajol-Saroj. She has also sung "Mann Mohana" from Hindi film Jodhaa Akbar. "Sutri Varum Bhoomi" from the Vidhyagar-composed Jeyamkondaan and "En Nenjil" from Baana Kaathadi is another foot-tapping solo Tamil song. "Rara Are Tu Aaja," she sang of Chandramukhi's Hindi-dubbed version of Chandramukhi in 2008. Marali Mareyagi from Sargam's 2009 film Savaari was well-received and has received several awards. Naan Kadavul, the latest Ilaiyaraaja-composed Tamil film, has a song called "Amma Un Pillai" in which she appears. Sargam appeared in A. R. Rahman's first-ever photorealistic motion capture film, Kochadaiyaan, which was lip-synced by Deepika Padukone on film. In Thirumanam Enum Nikkah and "Sonnathu Sonnathu" in Aranmanai, Sargam released two other hit songs "Kannukkul Pothivaippen" in the same year. Rudhramadevi, a classical drama, performed two songs for Ilaiyaraaja in 2015.

Sargam made a contribution to the field of sacred music in 2011 by performing an album titled Mahalaxmi Mukti Samvad, MMS i.e. Dialogues of Salvation by Mahalaxmi. Dr. Pradeep Wagh wrote the lyrics. Guru Vidyavachaspati Dr. Shankar Abhyankar's album was unveiled in the hands of a spiritual Guru.

Sadhana Sargam performed a romantic duet with Udit Narayan in Raghvendra Singh's music direction for Rajshri Production's television show Jhilmil Ka Aangan Hoga on the Sahara One channel in 2013.

Sargam's "O Kaanha Tohe Arpan Karun" penned by Raghvendra Singh in Navin Manish's music direction for Rajshri productions, a bhajan was recorded on Life Ok's television show Mere rang mein rantern waali.

Sargam and Kumar Sanu recorded "Dard Karaara" from Dum Laga Ke Haisha in Anu Malik music in 2015. The pair appeared together once more in 2017, but this time for a TV series named Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai; the song became a instant hit.

In Madhuri Dixit's debut film, Bucket List, Sargam performed a vivacious and inspiring song Houn Jau Dya. Shreya Ghosal and Shaan's voices were also present in the song.

Sargam and Jonita Gandhi recorded "Nee Sirichalum" from the Vishal-starrer Action in 2019. a song in the music direction of Sekar Sai Barath was released this year to celebrate the 500th episode of the hit series Sembaruthi, Sargam, and Vijay Prakash.

Sargam's collaboration with A R Rahman and Gulzar in June 2021 produced the song "Meri Pukaar Suno." Six other singers appear on the album; Alka Yagnik, K.S. Chithra, Shreya Ghoshal, Shashaa Tirupati, Armaan Malik, and Asees Kaur are among the guests. Sargam performed her first song in Daan Pratidan, Ajoy Das's composition. Bappi Lahiri approached her in the film Tomar Rakte Amar Sohag the following year. She appeared in films including Sagar Kinare, Kotha Chilo, Phiriye Dao, and Dhushar Godhuli. In the film "Benge," sung by Arijit Singh and Tulsi Kumar, she sang the song "Holo Dhonno Jibon" alongside Sonu Nigam.
