In the 54th Filmfare Awards, she was nominated for the Best Female Playback Singer award for the song.

During the 55th Filmfare Awards ceremony in Paa, Ilaiyaraaja collaborated with Ilaiyaraaja (2009), where she performed the song "Udi udi Ittefaq Se" for which she received another nomination in the same segment.

Due to these achievements, Rao has become one of India's top female singers. Rao is best known in the media for trying new styles in her songs and singing for various genres.

Rao, who sees her father as her greatest inspiration in the music industry, has aided charities for a variety of causes.

Early life

Apeksha Rao was born in Jamshedpur, India, on April 11, 1984, but Shilpa Rao was later named as Apeksha Rao, but later it was changed to Shilpa Rao. Shilpa is a girl who has "to do with art," according to her. She began singing as a child, mentored and guided by her father, S Venkat Rao, who holds a degree in music. "His teaching Method was both casual and also highly effective because it was intended to pique my curiosity." Rao went to Little Flower School and Loyola School, Jamshedpur, where she was a member of the choir group in school for her education. She and her family travelled to Mumbai in 1997 to complete a postgraduate diploma in statistics from the University of Mumbai.

After meeting Hariharan at the age of 13, Rao was inspired to be a singer, and he started training under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, who was denied by Hariharan. Since she wasn't "so active" on social media at the time, she found herself struggling with "finding information" and meeting music composers. Rao's earliest days in the city; "Jamshedpur is home for me, but Mumbai has made me a more patient person and a more hardworking artist I've ever been." She began performing live with Hariharan in 2001 and then went on to compete at various venues, winning a national talent competition in New Delhi. Shankar Mahadevan, one of the contest's judges, had a baby and wanted to settle in Mumbai.

She migrated to Mumbai in 2004 and completed a Post Graduation in Applied Statistics from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Mahadevan left Rao few names of people who could have aided her in learning to sing jingles. Rao said that singing jingles was "perhaps the most" way to begin in Mumbai because it enabled her to make the best contacts in the studios. She spent three years as a jingle singer and lived a life of her own. She performed for Cadbury's Munch, Sunsilk, Anchor Gel, and No Marks.

Personal life and philanthropy

She describes herself as a "movie enthusiast" and follows films from around the world. She does not see language as a problem. "I can watch anything if the plot tickles my interest." Shruti Pathak and Meiyang Chang are her closest company colleagues, according to her. Rao avoids dusty places because she is allergic to dust, giving priority to hygiene. Rao restricts too much candy and "strong smelling fruits" because she is "very sensitive" to odors when eating a healthy diet. Rao emphasizes fitness by taking the stairs rather than the elevator, "eating nutritious" foods, and "sleeping properly."

In 2021, Rao married Photographer Ritesh Krishnan in a registered wedding at her home. In a Bombay Times interview about her wedding, Rao said, "We met three years ago on (music composer) Pritam's USA tour." Ritesh seemed to be a loving person, and we began to hang out together. I felt that he was a chilled-out guy on the first day that I met him, which was extremely pleasant for me. We first started traveling together in 2018 and attended many shows around India.

Rao has supported charitable causes in lieu of acting on films. She appeared on NDTV's Greenathon, an initiative to promote eco-friendliness and investigate poor electricity sources in rural villages, in March 2010. Rao performed "Haseen Zindagi" on October 11, 2011 alongside Teesha Nigam, Shruti Pathak, Neha Bhasin, Shefali Alvares, and Akriti Kakkar, which was part of Sonu Nigam's campaign to raise breast cancer awareness. She appeared on "100 Pipers Play for a Cause," a cultural extravaganza dedicated to raising money for people impacted by the Nepal earthquake in Delhi. Rao performed live on 2nd March 2012, Seagram's Fuel Music Day, alongside 50 other artists, on a digital platform ArtistAloud.com to demonstrate their love for independent music in India.

Rao appeared on Coca-Cola's "Support My School," a 12-hour television show that has raised funds and promises for the revival of 272 schools in February 2013. In May 2013, Rao held an event that promoted public knowledge of the effects and benefits of nicotine use in addition to raising funds for cancer patients. In October 2014, Rao performed in a New Delhi musical festival for the flood impacted people of Assam. Rao launched "I am 100% Bihar" movement for the state's clean energy initiative in July 2015. He took to social media in the country's clean energy initiative in July 2015.

Shilpa Rao Career

Career

While Rao was attending college, she worked with Mithoon, who called her to record the song "Tose Naina" from Anwar (2007). "This song is very close to my heart, and it has shown me what thrill and adoration of music is and can be," Rao said. Despite Rao's description of "Tose Naina" as her debut song, Ek Ajnabee (2005)'s soundtrack includes Rao's alap embedded within, as well as Rao's alap. Aggar and The Train are two of two projects that she worked on throughout the year; Mithoon and The Train. Despite the fact that "Sehra" from the former received critical feedback from music critics, both "Woh Ajnabee" and "Teri Tamanna" from the latter's "strong vocals" were particularly applauded; Raja Sen from Rediff.com applauded Rao's "strong vocals" in particular. Rao's name to director Nikhil Advani, who is shooting for Salaam-e-Ishq, is suggested by photographer Shankar Mahadevan of the trio Shankar-Ehsaan–Loy, who performed "Saiyaan Re" while shooting in Salaam-e-Ishq, music composer Shankar Mahadevan from Shankar-Ehsaan–Loy. "Despite Shankar Mahadevan's vivacious presence [Rao], which you should never fear," Sukanya Verma's "imperfect performance" of the song wrote, "I am never threatened." She partnered with Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy to create the Hindi version of the song "All For One" from High School Musical 2.

Raghav Sachar-composed remix of "Gup Chup" from One Two Three Three is released by Rao's first release of 2008, followed by "Ek Lau" from Aamir, composed by Amit Trivedi. "Ek Lau" was a song of "hope for many people in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks," Rao said. She hoped that the song would inspire people and chose "Ek Lau" as one of the "few compositions" that is "close" to her. She was heard in a "faint alaap" from Hijack, as well as KK, which translated "Main Sajda" for Anu Malik in Good Luck! The pair, who appeared in Vishal–Shekhar's "Khuda Jaane" from Bachna Ae Haseeno earlier this year, spent time together during the year. Rao, who called the album a "timeless masterpiece," thought it was beautifully produced and written. She said she was "fortunate to be a part" of the film. It was her first nomination in Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.

Rao, a friend of music composer Amit Trivedi, introduced him to Anurag Kashyap, director of the film Dev.D (2009), who was looking for a new composer with a "distinct vision" for his film. "Dhol Yaara Dhol" from the film's soundtrack was recorded three years ago and was "free of charge." She was last heard in Piyush Mishra-composed Gulaal, where she appeared on the track "Aisi Sazaa" on "Aisi Sazaa." Sen. Rediff.com praised Rao's "distinctively dulcet tones" for making the song a hit song. Rao performed the track "Mudi Mudi Ittefaq Se" for Ilaiyara's Paa after recording "Manzaraat" from Sikandar. She referred to the performance as the "most difficult audition" and said the song's lyrics and "musical bounces" were a "test" in establishing her versatility. Critics responded favorably to the album, and Rediff.com's Chandrima Palfi selected the track as the "most important song of the album." Rao's "Udi Ittefaq Se" was another track on the soundtrack album, with slight variations in the arrangement and lyrics. "Mudi Mudi Ittefaq Se" received her second Filmfare Award nomination in the Best Female Singer category.

For Toh Baat Pakki, Rao collaborated with Pritam for the first time, performing "Ittefaq Tu Nahin" for Mallika and "Dil Le Jaa" for Toh Baat Pakki. Admissions Open and Vishal-Shekhar for Anjaani teamed up with Trivedi. Despite the fact that her previous releases during the year received mixed feedback from critics; "I Feel Good" and "Anjaana Anjaani" from the former were both applauded by Rao; Joginder Tuteja from Bollywood Hungama praised her for her steadfastness and giving "good company" to her co-singers; She appeared in "Ankhi Na Maar" of Apartment, and performed two tracks for Lahore; Piyush Mishra's Sufi song "O Re Bande" and M.M. The Punjabi flavored "Rang De" in Kreem is a film from Pakistan's Punjabi cuisine. Since Rao in Lahore performed different songs on the same album, the Times of India praised her work. Rao made her Tamil debut in the year with Yuvan Shankar's "Oru Maalai Neram" as a member of Yuvan Shankar Raja-composed Naan Mahaan Mahaan Alla, as well as Javed Ali.

"Allah Maaf Kare," Desi Boyz' third collaboration with Pritam, was released. In "Yeh Pal" from No One Killed Jessica, she lent her voice for Trivedi, where NDTV reports that Rao produced the song "effectively voiced" the song. Salim-Sulaiman's first collaboration in the year is remembered by her song "Jazba" from Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl's "Jazba" during the year. Rao's vocals in the energetic track were highly praised; Koimoi's Vivek Warrier announced that her vocals are "refreshing" and "have a strong presence." During the year, she worked with Raghu Dixit as the composer and Ash King as the co-singer in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge's "Uh-Oh Uh-Oh." Rao collaborated with lyricist Neelesh Misra and composer Amartya Rahut to form the Band Called Nine, which is dedicated to the ancient Indian art of storytelling. They released Rewind, a compilation of songs and stories, during the year, which mixed with a story. In addition,, Rao appeared in several television series, including MTV Unplugged and The Dewarists, where she appeared on acoustic version of some of her earlier released songs for the former and the song "I Believe" with Parikrama and Agnee for the latter. Rao said MTV Unplugged "very difficult" to do because she had to produce a new version of songs and "show it to people who may have seen it earlier and liked it."

Rao appeared in "Jab Main Tumhare Saath Hun" from Jodi Breakers (2012) after Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl. "She deserves to be heard much more often," Tuteja said of the Bollywood Hungama album. Rao appeared in two other films, including "Yaariyaan" of Cocktail, and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. The title track and "Gustakh Dil" from the latter received a warm reception; BBC Online's Jaspreet Pandohar regarded the title track as a "likeable listen" for Rao's "warm Hinglish" vocals. "Her voice has a certain heft and edge to it, which makes one wonder why she doesn't get behind the microphone more often." Rao's time in A.R. came to an end during the year. Rahman performed "Ishq Shava" from Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which was a mashup of Arabic and techno sounds, on a cassette. The song, according to Shivi of Koimoi, demonstrates Rao's versatility as a singer.

The pair worked together for 3G (2013), where she appeared "Khalbali" alongside Arijit Singh on Rao's debut and The Train with Mithoon. She appeared on the Bombay Talkies' album "Apna Bombay Talkies" which celebrated India's 100th year of cinema and the start of a new cinematic age. The singers wrote for actors who do the playback singing, and Rao dubbed Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the album, while Rao dubbed for Deepika Padukone. She appeared alongside Sreeram Chandra in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani's Pritam-composed "Subhanallah." Critics loved Rao's "wistful interpretation" in the film, but filmmaker Devesh Sharma praised her performance, while filmfare's Devesh Sharma praised Rao's "flawless" in her role. Pritam's "Malang" from Dhoom 3 was released as her year's finale, as well as Siddharth Mahadevan. "Malang" is special and sets itself apart from other tracks due to the mash-up of "high energy and a Sufi touch," Rao says.

Soumik Sen-composed "Gulaabi" from Gulaab Gang was the first release of Rao in 2014, followed by Vishal–Shekhar's "Meherbaan" from Bang Bang! "Thode Se Hum" from Badmashiyaan, composed by Bobby–Imran, began in 2015. According to The Times of India, Rao produced a "quieter female interpretation" of the song with as much "soulfulness" as Mohit Chauhan does in his version. Similar was the case with her forthcoming release, "Le Chal Mujhe" from NH10, in which she tried a "low octave" voice texture for the song. It was initially believed to be a duet between Chauhan and Chauhan and later announced as a solo by the two artists, receiving a warm reaction from critics for separate versions. Rao in her version "managed to outshine two of the most sought after singers, Chauhan and Singh," according to Rucha Sharma of Daily News and Analysis. After Sharmistha Chatterjee, who appeared with Mekaal Hasan Band, was granted the privilege of appearing in Coke Studio Pakistan, the critically acclaimed musical performance, Rao became India's second Indian artist. In the fourth episode of the ninth season, Rao made her debut with the folk-song "Paar Chanaa De." The song, composed by Noori, narrates the tale of a folk-tale Sohni Mahiwal. Rao referred to the performance as "a dramatic saga" because the song has emotion, anxiousness, longing to see your loved one, and hope. It's a folk song, and the terms are extremely difficult to say." "Paar Chanaa De" received raves from its debut. The song, according to Srikanth Prabhu of The Express Tribune, is "very different and gracing perfection in its own way." "Coke Studio Pakistan] is a place where all the musicians are in an environment where they have their instruments, their space, and the freedom to choose something and broadcast it to the people in their own style," she described the experience.
