Shawn Mullins Career

Early life and military career

Mullins was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Beginning at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Georgia (where he met friend and mentor Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls), he showed an interest in music. He refined his craft in his college days at University of North Georgia (then unknown as North Georgia College) as a solo acoustic guitarist and bandmaster of the military marching band (Golden Eagle Band). He received an Army ROTC scholarship with the intention of pursuing a military career at the University of North Georgia. Despite dismissing this idea in favour of songwriting, the deal nevertheless obliged him after graduation to serve a short time in the US Army Reserve's Individual Ready Reserve unit. He spent his time in inactive service, earning the rank of 1st lieutenant before doing his service duty and resigning honorably.

Career

"Shawn Eric Mullins with Twice Removed" was a band that would bring him to campus and regional prominence shortly. Mullins' name was eventually shed on amicable terms, and he began to build his reputation as a solo artist.

His critical breakthrough came when his album "Lullaby," from the album Soul's Core, became a radio and video hit. Dominique Swain appeared in the film "Lullaby," directed by Roger Pistole. In reaction to an e-mail sent by the show's producers looking for a theme song, his song, "All in My Head," was posted on the show Scrubs. Mullins created a demo version of the film and sent it in within 24 hours. The theme song wasn't chosen, but the demo version was used in a season one episode of the series.

On Dawson's Creek's soundtrack, another single, "Shimmer," was included, and was a minor success. "Shimmer" was also used in Australia as part of its marketing effort during the 2000 Summer Olympics, and it is still considered in Australia as the unofficial anthem of the games. He has yet to replicate "Lullaby"'s ubiquitous commercial success, which was also released as a live performance on the X Lounge II in 1999. Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge formed The Thorns in early 2002.

Mullins' first album, 9th Ward Pickin Parlor, was released on Vanguard Records in 2006, as well as the album's new single "Beautiful Wreck." The single had modest success at number one on the Americana and AAA (Adult Album Alternatives), and it was featured in the Cities 97 Sampler Volume 18.

Mullins' second album on Vanguard, Honeydew, was released on March 11, 2008. Mullins' third album, Light You Up, was released on October 12, 2010.

Mullins' new album, My Stupid Heart, was released on October 23, 2015, on Sugar Hill and Rounder Records.
