Kim Sang-woo (Korean: born July 3, 1993), also known as Roy Kim (Korean: ), is a South Korean singer-songwriter and radio presenter. Since winning the television talent competition show Superstar K 4 in 2012, he began his singing career.

Kim officially debuted on Love Love Love (2013), which also featured the hit single "Bom Bom Bom Bom." At the 15th Mnet Asian Music Awards and the 2014 Golden Disc Awards, Kim was honoured for her best new artist on the album. Kim also performed on Home (2014) and The Great Dipper (2015), as well as the extended version, Blooming Season (2017). He has also contributed to soundtracks for television series including Reply 1994, Pinocchio, Another Miss Oh, and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. Kim has sold over 12 million digital downloads in his native country as of October 2022 (see Roy Kim's discography).

Early life and education

On July 3, 1993, Roy Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea. His father, a senior executive of Seoul Takju, a well-known makgeolli liquor firm, is a former executive of a major mahogeolli liquor manufacturer. His mother is an artist. Jung Yoon-hye, a former member of the Rainbow company, is Kim's cousin.

Kim attended Kyung Bok Elementary School and Whimoon Middle School in Asheville, North Carolina, where he graduated from Asheville, North Carolina, in 2012.

Kim was accepted to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 2012, but he waited for his Superstar K 4 audition. In 2013, he transitioned between attending school in the United States and seeking his music career in South Korea during his first year at Georgetown. He was majoring in sociology, which he said was "helpful for writing lyrics." Kim denied preparing for the Georgetown graduation ceremony in May and then returned to Korea to face the Burning Sun investigators after finishing his final exam in May 2019. Despite the probe, Kim was granted an undergraduate degree.

Personal life

Kim's self-produced album "Look On" was his first single in 1 year and 8 months, and it will be his last single before enlisting into the Republic of Korea Marine Corps for his mandatory military enlistment on June 15. Kim will be discharged from military service on December 14, 2021, without returning to the unit after his last vacation in accordance with the Ministry of Defense's recommendations for preventing the dissemination of COVID-19.

Kim auditioned for Mnet's television talent competition Superstar K 4 (the South Korean equivalent of American Idol). He was the season's champion out of nearly two million applicants. He appeared at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong after his win.

Kim released Love Love Love in June 2013, which included the "mega-hit" track "Bom Bom Bom." The single topped the Gaon Digital Chart for two weeks, and Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 for three weeks after its debut. "Love Love Love" the album's title track, which reached No. On the Gaon chart, there are two links and No. On the Billboard chart, there are four columns. Kim received numerous accolades, including Best New Male Artist at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards, 20's Booming Star at the 2013 Mnet 20's Choice Awards, Rookie of the Year and Popularity at the 2014 Golden Disc Awards, following the introduction of his first album.

In October 2014, Kim released Home, his second album. The album's lead single, which also referred to "Home," was a hit, debuting at No. 1 and charting South Korea's real-time music charts upon its debut and peaking at No. 2. 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart. Kim began touring South Korea earlier this month to promote the album. He contributed to the soundtrack for the television series Pinocchio in November, with the track "Pinocchio," for which he received Best Original Soundtrack at the 2015 Hito Music Awards in Taiwan. Kim was also the first foreign artist to attend the Hito Music Awards since being established in 2003.

Kim's third album, The Great Dipper, was released in December 2015. The album's title track was a ballad, marking a departure from Kim's previous acoustic folk singles. Kim appeared at three solo concerts in Seoul this year, all of whom were sold out before the album's debut.

In May 2017, Kim released Blooming Season, his first extended play (Korean: ). He released "Only then," which debuted on Korean music charts and that was awarded a Platinum award for digital sales by Gaon in February. Kim received Best Ballad at the 2018 Melon Music Awards, Best Male Artist at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards, and a Digital Bonsang at the 2019 Golden Disc Awards for the song.

Kim would debut a new album in October 2022, the first since he was recalled from military service. Kim's official SNS published a snapshot of his new single "Take Me Back In Time" on October 7, 2022. On October 14, the single was released. On October 25, his pre-release single will be followed by the unveiling of his fourth full album And.
