Rocco Rock Career

Professional wrestling career

Petty began wrestling in 1978, graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in diet, and following a brief boxing career, he began wrestling as "The Cheetah Kid." He was prepared by Afa Anoa's. Petty served as an enhancement specialist (a jobber) in the American Wrestling Association from 1985 to 1988. He competed in the National Wrestling Alliance in 1990, notably as "Colonel DeKlerk," where he and Sergeant Krueger starred South Africa in a tag team competition, but the team lost to The Steiner Brothers.

He spent a year with New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he teamed up with Pegasus Kid. Johnny Grunge and I formed The Public Enemy in 1993, a gimmick of inner city criminals. The team first competed in the Universal Wrestling Federation and Extreme Championship Wrestling. The team competed with Terry Funk and The Gangstas in ECW, winning the ECW Tag Team Championship four times. Thanks to the team's success in 1995, he earned him his highest ranking in the annual PWI 500, in which he ranked #90.

The Public Enemy joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996, where they captured the tag team crown and rivalted with The Nasty Boys. They continued to use some of the hardercore strategies that had made them well known in ECW, such as the frequent use of tables in matches. During that time, he made a few single-commission appearances as The Cheetah Kid. In early 1999, the Public Enemy became a member of the World Wrestling Federation. They were not accepted "backstage" by veteran WWF wrestlers and backstage workers due to bitterness over the fact that The Public Enemy chose WCW over the WWF when the two companies were seeking the tag team in late 1995. In order not to "cause confusion" with The Rock, Rocco Rock was forced to change his name and go by the shorter name "Flyboy Rocco." They made their WWF debut on February 22, 1999, defeating The Brood by disqualification. The APA's most notable appearance in the two months they were in the WWF was losing a squash match against the Acolytes on Sunday Night Heat in Pittsburgh; following a brief feud with APA and The Public Enemy's subsequent publication, the APA claimed that the WWF "ran The Public Enemy out" of the WWF. They said they could do the same to another well-known ECW tag team (the Dudley Boys), and after the Dudley Boys' victory, it was commonly referred to as "Passing the Acolyte Test" since the Dudley Boyz survived, although The Public Enemy failed.

Much of the animosity was due to Terry Taylor's insertion into the company, as well as the Acolytes, according to John "Bradshaw" Layfield, who had his own backstage problems with much of the wrestlers, including the Acolytes. They also wanted to change the intended finish of the squash tournament, which required them to be led by Acolytes. The Acolytes were only told to guarantee that they made it to the match's scheduled conclusion, resulting in the match being turned into a legitimate shooting, with The Acolytes dominating Public Enemy for the entire four-minute match. Public Enemy will wrestle for a final time on March 30, 1999 in a match taped for Shotgun Saturday Night, losing to the Hardy Boys by disqualification. On April 10, 1999, the match was broadcast live on television. Both members of Public Enemy and "Dr. Death" were released in mid-April just short of airing. Bart Gunn, and LOD 2000 were all envisioned by Steve Williams (who main-evented the episode). They returned to WCW in the same year.

Petty lost to Bill Goldberg on WCW Thunder on August 8, 1999. They also participated in the Xtreme Wrestling Federation as the "South Philly Posse" as their boss, with Jasmin St. Claire as their boss. Petty debuted as a singles wrestler on the independent circuit before then competing as a singles wrestler.
