Rigoberto Tovar Garca (March 29, 1946 – March 27, 2005) was a Mexican singer best known as Rigo Tovar.
Tovar, who is best known for his cumbias, infused traditional Mexican and Latin music with modern instruments such as the electric guitar and synthesizer, as well as popular genres such as rock and soul music. Tovar was born and raised in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
In the early 1970s, he began to flourish in the Houston, Texas neighborhood of East End.
He quickly established a large fanbase as a blend of cumbia, tropical, and modern pop rock.
Tovar's first album, Matamoros Querido, received two hits, "Matamoros Querido" and "Lamento De Amor," in 1971. Tovar set new attendance records in Mexico and Latin America during his career (many of which survive to this day), sold over 30 million albums, and has continued to influence countless artists of all genres.
Personal life
Tovar died of diabetic signs leading to cardiomyopathy on March 27, 2005, just days shy of his 59th birthday. His funeral was held behind closed doors in a famous funeral home in Mexico City, but supporters and some relatives of his large family attended the funeral service by force. Tovar was cremated and his ashes were scattered on one of Matamoros' beaches as he pleased.
Early career and success
Tovar achieved a huge following and success in Mexico and the United States as a result of extensive radio play and touring. He was known as "El dolo de México" (Mexico's Idol) and "El dolo de las multitudes) during his time as a scholar. (The Idol of the Masses) during his days of fame. Amor y Cumbia's 1976 album catapulted him to superstardom not only in Mexico, but also in other Latin Americas as well as the United States. His adoring public coined the phrase "Rigo es Amor," which is translated in English as "Rigo is Love" in English. He was referring to the love songs he performed and the enthusiasm he pour into them. His music, voice, and appearance were so endearing to so many that he became the living embodiment of love. It was routinely shouted out at his concerts and is now used when people hear of him.
