At the base, he received a bad conduct discharge in 1999 after going AWOL on two occasions and disobeying an order from a commanding officer. Professional wrestling career
Orton made his wrestling debut in 2000 at the Midwest Mishouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling (MMWA-SICW), an offshoot of the historic St. Louis Wrestling Club helmed by Sam Muchnick. Bob Orton Jr. was trained by both the promotion and his dad. He competed for the tournament for a month, where he competed with wrestlers like Ace Strange and Mark Bland. Orton also refereed a few matches with World Organized Wrestling (WOW), a sport in which his uncle Barry Orton served.
Orton joined the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 2001 and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in Louisville, Kentucky, where he continued his training. On February 14, 2001, he defeated Mr. Black and Flash Flanagan on May 5, 2001, respectively. He appeared in a tag match in Jacksonville, Indiana, on several occasions, and then lost to The Prototype (John Cena) in a mixed WWF/OVW tournament. He also appeared on several WWF house shows that were unaffiliated with OVW, the first being on May 1, 2001, when he met Billy Gunn. Orton sustained a shoulder injury within weeks of his debut on the Raw brand, leaving him sidelined for months. Orton was also on Raw in his own Randy News Network (RNN) segment, a weekly vignette featuring him discussing his illness, while recovering. Orton's transformation into a narcissistic and self-centered heel sparked several other areas of Raw programming, causing him to gradually transition into a narcissistic and self-centered heel.
Orton rejoined the Evolution stable after his injury recovered, including Ric Flair, Triple H, and relative newcomer Batista. Rawling evolved from 2003 to 2004, with Armageddon being the first time the group's Raw men's titles were held by Evolution members. Orton spent a significant part of his time in 2003 assisting Triple H with their World Heavyweight Championship battles. He appeared in Triple H's Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship in SummerSlam, which was mainly to ensure Triple H's title defense and was ruled out by Goldberg, but Triple H maintained his position and retained his title.
Orton began claiming himself the "Legend Killer," with his gimmick as that of a young upstart who was so gifted that he befuddled wrestling's future. He embarked on a slew of feuds with older, well-respected names in wrestling and gained fame for openly disrespecting them. Orton defeated Shawn Michaels at Unforgiven in the first of many high-profile matches billed as "Legend vs. Legend Killer" in the first of many high-profile matches billed as "Legend vs. Legend Killer" by Sam Flair. Orton won the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in seven years, and he held the title for 210 days. Orton continued to develop himself as a "Legend Killer" throughout 2004, challenging semi-retired wrestler Mick Foley. Foley, who is known for his ferocious hardcore matches and his ability to deal with excruciating agony, has pushed Orton to a difficultcore "Legend vs. Legend Killer" match for his Intercontinental Championship, which Orton reluctantly accepted. Orton defeated Foley in a hardcore match to keep the Intercontinental Championship alive, with a table covered in barbed wire, fire, a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire (a signature weapon of Foley's nicknamed "Barbie"), and Orton being thrown into hundreds of thumbtacks. On the April 26 episode of Raw, Orton later spat in the face of Harley Race. Shelton Benjamin retained the Intercontinental Championship at Bad Blood two months later. He lost the title to Edge in July at Vengeance.
Orton became the top contender for the World Heavyweight Championship after losing the Intercontinental Championship on July 26. Orton defeated Chris Benoit for the championship at SummerSlam, becoming the youngest world champion in WWE history at the age of 24. After the match, Benoit congratulated Orton for displaying the ability to "be a man." Orton won the title against Benoit in a rematch, but Evolution threw Orton a mock parade, only to announce that they were not happy with his new victory. Although Batista had Orton propped on his shoulders in elation, Triple H gave him a warm thumbs-up and then abruptly turned it into a thumbs-down, which was followed by Batista dropping Orton to the ground. Orton was kicked out of Evolution by Triple H, Flair, and Batista, resulting in Orton being booted out of Evolution. Orton was called out and ordered to surrender the championship next week, but he refused, spitting in Triple H's face and pelting him with the title belt. Orton's break with Evolution resulted in him turning face as he continued to compete with his former coworkers. Orton then produced a copy of SmackDown!
The Undertaker was on the front page of the magazine, which also included The Undertaker. Orton said he'd stand out from all other wrestlers by breaking The Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania, according to Heeding Graham's advice. Orton taunted The Undertaker throughout March 2005, claiming he was unafraid of him. Orton turned heel again on March 21 Raw after delivering an RKO to his unsuspecting on-screen girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, knocking her unconscious. Randy Orton RKO'd the Undertaker and escorted him on the back of the Undertaker, who was then pushed into the ring by Mysterio, who then turned the lowrider into the SmackDown! An explosion was created when the device was launched, resulting in an explosion. In a Cell match at Armageddon, the feud was finally settled with a Hell. The Undertaker appeared on the ring to give a promo, but one of his druids appeared to be standing in the ring on the December 16 episode of SmackDown! In a surprise attack, the Undertaker sustained an RKO from Orton. According to the storyline, the druid revealed himself to be Orton's father, who gave Orton The Undertaker's urn, allowing whomever possessed it to control The Undertaker. The Undertaker, on the other hand, defeated Orton in a Cell match at Armageddon, bringing an end to the nine-month feud.Orton was the sixth and final wrestler at Armageddon in 2006, but he was eliminated by the match's eventual champion, Rey Mysterio, who won a world championship at WrestleMania 22 years ago. At No Way Out, Orton was challenged to a match for his title shot. Orton made inflammatory remarks about Eddie Guerrero, Mysterio's friend who had died a few months earlier in an attempt to aspire to villain heat in the weeks leading up to No Way Out. Many fans were distasteful so soon after Guerrero's death in November 2005. Orton won at No Way Out, earning Mysterio's title shot for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22.SmackDown!
Theodore Long, the GM, has recalled Mysterio to the WrestleMania 22 championship match, making it a triple threat competition between Orton, Mysterio, and then-champion Kurt Angle. Orton said in an interview, "my behavior was unbecoming of a champion," which is what I would be doing again when I return." Kurt Angle broke Orton's ankle during a King of the Ring quarterfinal match to make up for the suspension. Orton came from his suspension in June to the Raw brand, where he became a rivalry with Angle, culminating in matches at ECW One Night Stand (which he lost) and Vengeance (which he won) before engaging in a storyline feud with Hulk Hogan. Orton began cutting promos disparaging the aging Hogan and mingling with Hogan's then-eighteen-year-old daughter Brooke. The two teams competed in a "Legend vs. Legend Killer" tournament at SummerSlam, which Hogan won. Carlito was defeated at Unforgiven the next month.
Edge (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) was cost Edge the WWE Championship when he was reinstated, and Edge confronted Orton to join forces against the team. Orton, whose championship reign was shattered by Triple H in 2004, agreed, forming the tag team Rated-RKO. The two defeated D-X on Cyber Sunday with special guest referee Eric Bischoff, becoming the first team to defeat D-X since their reunion in June, and they quickly advanced to World Tag Team Champions by defeating Ric Flair and Roddy Piper on the November 13 episode of Raw. On the November 27 episode of Raw, Rated-RKO targeted Ric Flair with steel chairs to enrage D-X. Rated-RKO defended the World Tag Team Championship against D-X at New Year's Revolution, but the match was declared a no-contest after Triple H sustained a legitimate injury during the match. Rated-RKO was subsequently assaulted by D-X. Rated-RKO and Michaels continued their on-screen rivalry with Triple Houtout of action. Both men competed in the eponymous tournament and advanced to the final four, but Michaels disqualified them both. Michaels later joined WWE Champion John Cena to defeat Rated-RKO to win the World Tag Team Championship on Raw the following night. Both Edge and Orton concentrated on the WWE Championship after losing the tag team championships, causing friction between them. They lost a triple threat match against Michaels on February 5, 2007 to earn a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 23. Both wrestled in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania, but Mr. Kennedy claimed the match. After both men's shoulders were down during the pinfall, Raw, Orton and Michaels fought to a no contest in a top-one contender's match for the WWE Championship on April 9, Orton and Michaels. Eventually, Orton and Edge faced off in a thrilling four-way match against Cena and Michaels at Backlash, but Cena retained the title after pinning Orton. Edge and Joe were matched in a singles match on April 30, which Edge won. Edge's relationship was effectively ended when they joined the SmackDown! The brand is a success. Orton continued his "Legend Killer" persona by attacking Shawn Michaels with frequent head and a running punt to the head. Orton defeated Michaels on Judgment Day by knocking out as Michaels sustained a kayfabe concussion and collapsed during the game. Orton continued his assaults when he clashed with Rob Van Dam at One Night Stand (after losing a stretcher match to Van Dam), Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and Sgt. Slaughter. During this period, Orton slithered around and stalked his victims like a snake, prompting the nickname "The Viper" to be Orton's nickname.
Orton was named the top contender for John Cena's WWE Championship on July 23. Orton assaulted Cena with the RKO three times before their scheduled match at SummerSlam. Orton lost the title match at SummerSlam when Cena pinned him down after a FU. On the next night, Orton's rawlings request a match, but Raw General Manager William Regal refused him. He then appealed to Mr. McMahon, who gave him the opportunity if he "proved himself." Orton interfered in Cena's match with King Booker, assaulting him before kicking his father in the chest. Orton was rematch at Unfortun, which he won by disqualification after Cena refused to avoid punching him in the corner; however, Cena retained the championship because titles cannot change hands by disqualification. Orton's father, who had been at ringside again, kicked Orton in the chest, resulting in a match the next night on the 19th episode of Raw, in which Orton stunned Cena's father by disqualification, but Cena's father was unable to recover, while Cena's mother was handcuffed to the ropes. Cena sustained a legitimate injury during a match against Mr. Kennedy on October 1, the first episode of Raw, after which Orton attacked Cena with an RKO. He went by the name of "The Viper" after this. Orton then cast him out of the cage and gave him a RKO on the broadcast table. Due to this injury, John Cena was forced to leave the WWE Championship.
Mr. McMahon awarded Randy Orton the WWE Championship, which John Cena had vacated due to injury. Orton lost the title to Triple H in the first round but regained it later that night in a Last Man Standing match. Orton revived his rivalry with Shawn Michaels, who appeared on Raw on October 8 after Orton's championship coronation and superkicked him. Michaels was selected by fan voting over Jeff Hardy and Mr. Kennedy to attend Orton for the WWE Championship at Cyber Sunday, where Orton was disqualified after low blowing Michaels but kept the name. They rematched Survivor Series with a pre-match stipulation that if Michaels had used Sweet Chin Music, he would have lost and never had a second shot at the title, while Orton pinned Michaels at Survivor Series after an RKO failed to maintain the trophy. Orton began a feud with former WWE Championship champion Chris Jericho, who shocked Orton for the WWE Championship in Armageddon, in which Jericho was disqualified after interference from SmackDown! But Orton retained the name, John "Bradshaw" Layfield, the color analyst, until Jeff Hardy slammed Hardy's brother Matt in the head and Hardy's brother Matt in the head, and Hardy performed a Swanton Bomb off the Raw set onto Orton. At the Royal Rumble, he defended his armour against Hardy. He then revived his rivalry with John Cena, who had recovered from injury to win the 2008 Royal Rumble match. Cena took it at No Way Out and defeated Orton, who purposely disqualified by slapping the referee to keep the title. Cena defeated Orton in a non-title match with Triple H as the special guest referee, resulting in Cena being admitted to Orton's title match against Triple H at WrestleMania, making it a triple threat match. Orton won the WWE Championship against Cena and Triple H by beating Triple H after Triple H executed a Pedigree on him. Orton lost the title to Triple H in a thrilling four-way elimination match, as well as Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL). He faced Triple H for the title at One Night Stand again on Judgment Day in a steel cage match, effectively breaking his collarbone and keeping him out of action, after losing by Triple H. During this period, he acquired "Voices," the band Rev Theory's most popular entrance theme.
Orton was revived in a motorcycle accident after being medically inspected for return to the ring. He returned to Raw on September 1st, chastizing all the winners, including World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, who were suspended and slapped for allowing Cryme Tyme to steal their belts. They were inspired by this to try to gain Orton's respect. They achieved this feat at Unforgiven when they fought World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, requiring him to leave his title before his scheduled defense was set. Orton returned to in-ring action on November 3's Raw episode, losing to Punk due to DiBiase's absence, which resulted in Orton punching DiBiase in the head in retribution. Team Orton, which included Rhodes, defeated Team Batista, leaving Orton and Rhodes as the sole survivors. Orton suggested that he, Rhodes, and Manu form an alliance on December 1st episode of Raw. In a three-on-two handicap match, the stable, "The Legacy," debuted next week, defeating Batista and Triple H, Orton's former Evolution stablemates, in a three-on-two handicap match. Orton lost in a singles match to Batista at Armageddon.
On the January 19, 2009 episode of Raw, Orton began feuding with the McMahon family, claiming that he was more valuable than her and that she had become "worthless." Mr. McMahon, who pleaded that Orton apologise, was furious, or he'd have him fired on the spot. Orton assaulted and punched him in the head, resulting in his removal from the arena on a stretcher as Mr. McMahon was set to fire him. Orton won the Royal Rumble match on January 25, the last time anyone on Raw said he was in possession of IED and that he was not responsible for his behavior towards Mr. McMahon, claiming he had a "loss of control" due to the disorder. He also said that WWE knew of the condition but did nothing and threatened to sue WWE for the reason, and that if Stephanie were to fire him, it would result in a second lawsuit for breach of contract due to the fact that he was legally able to compete at WrestleMania because he won the Royal Rumble. Although Stephanie teased Orton, she changed her mind and said she had "bigger ambitions" that culminated in Shane McMahon's return to Raw and assaulting Orton. Orton was defeated in a No Holds Barred match at No Way Out, which he won. Orton's next night on Raw met Shane in an unsanctioned match that ended in a no contest when he punted Shane in the head, effectively ending the game and leaving him unable to continue the match. Stephanie then went back to the ring to tend to her brother, but Orton struck her with an RKO. Triple H joined the feud after Orton said he "crossed the line" when he attacked Stephanie, his real-life wife. Orton said later that all he had done was part of a plot to get revenge on Triple H after he kicked him out of Evolution back in 2004; according to Orton, Triple H "ruined his life"; so Orton decided to do the same and take everything Triple H worried about away from him. At WrestleMania 25, where he was disqualified, he challenged Triple H for the WWE Championship. He made it backlash by winning Triple H in a six-man tag team match against The Legacy and Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon. Orton defended the championship against Batista, where he regained disqualification after Rhodes and DiBiase interfered. He lost the title to Batista in a steel cage match against Extreme Rules. They met in The Bash once more in a Three Stages of Hell match, which Orton won after interference from Legacy. During SummerSlam, he defended the title against John Cena, employing several underhanded tactics to hold the championship. In a Cena match called "I Quit" at Breaking Point, he lost the title to Cena but recovered it from Cena in a Cell match in Hell in a Cell. Orton lost the championship to Cena in a one-hour Iron Man match to bring an end to the feud at Bragging Rights.

On the November 16 episode of Raw, Orton, and Kingston, Kingston and Kingston became involved in a brawl that culminated in Kingston kicking Orton through a table in the crowd. Both men were named captains of their respective teams at Survivor Series, where Kingston's team defeated Orton's team after Orton was last eliminated by Kingston. On the following episodes of Raw, the two traded victories over each other, resulting in a match between TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, which Orton won on December 13. Orton lost by disqualification when Rhodes interfered, causing Orton to sue both Rhodes and DiBiase after the match. Orton was disqualified in a non-title rematch on February 15 when Legacy interfered. Orton and DiBiase both participated in the WWE Elimination Chamber match in Elimination Chamber, where DiBiase eliminated Orton after hitting him with a pipe Rhodes had given him. Orton struck them in retaliation next night in a six-man tag team match, turning him upside down. Orton defeated Rhodes and DiBiase in a triple threat match at WrestleMania XXVI.

He feuded with Wade Barrett, who was blackmailing Cena to help him capture the trophy after successfully defending his title against Sheamus in a Cell match at Hell in a Cell. Orton retained the name against him in the Bragging Rights and Survivor Series. However, on the November 22 episode of Raw, Orton defeated Barrett once more in a championship match, but he lost the championship against The Miz because he earned his Money in the Bank. Orton's face was a Christian spat, causing him to loosening of his temper, kick Christian in the groin, and disqualified, resulting in Orton losing the championship. Orton regained control a month later when he defeated Christian in a No Holds Barred match. Orton ended his rivalry with Christian when he retained the World Heavyweight Championship in a steel cage match on August 30 of SmackDown. Since Henry became the top contender to the World Heavyweight Championship, Orton and Mark Henry began a feud. Henry continued to criticize Orton over the next two weeks. Orton lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Henry at Night of Champions and struggled to recover it two weeks later in a Cell match at Hell in a Cell. During their time together in Legacy, he began feuding with his former stablemate Cody Rhodes, who claims Orton had mistreated and assaulted him. Orton won a 41-man battle royal to earn a championship shot of his choice, and he defeated Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship later that night, but did not win the championship. He defeated Rhodes at Vengeance and then in a Street Fight on November 4th.
