Raj Babbar (born 23 June 1952) is a Hindi and Punjabi film actor and politician elected to the Indian National Congress.

A three-time Lok Sabha member and two-time members of the Indian Parliament's Upper House.

He was the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

Early life

Babbar was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, in a Punjabi family, but he hails from Tundla, Firozabad. He began his education at Mufid-E-Aam Inter College, Agra. He is alumnus of the National School of Drama's 1975 class and a graduate from Agra College.

Political life

Raj Babbar joined Janata Dal in 1989, which was led by V. P. Singh, and became involved in politics. He joined the Samajwadi Party later in life and was elected as a Member of the Parliament of India three times. He served in the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 1999. In 2004, he was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha elections for his second term. In 2006, he was banned from the Samajwadi Party. Later, he joined Indian National Congress in 2008 and was elected for his fourth term as a member of Parliament in 2009 by defeating Dimple Yadav, wife of Akhilesh Yadav, and Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is a student of the National Congress. He fought from Ghaziabad and lost to General V. K. Singh in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He was elected as the president of Uttar Pradesh's congress committee (UPCC), but he didn't even manage to save his own seat in the 2019 elections and lost by a huge margin of 4,95,065 votes to Rajkumar Chahar of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Raj Babbar, the Congress spokesman, caused controversy in 2013 by claiming that Rs.12 was sufficient for a common man to have a full meal in Mumbai, which attracted widespread backlash. He also said that a poor person in India can get complete meals two times a day, within Rs. 5000. Raj Babbar's remark was mocked by 28 to 32, and opposition parties called his argument laughable. Later, he regretted his words. Narendra Modi was compared by Adolf Hitler in July 2013, which also caused controversies.

Personal life

Raj Babbar married Nadira Zaheer, the daughter of well-known theatre actress Sajjad Zaheer. His children, Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar, are from Nadira. He married actress Smita Patil, who gave birth to their son Pharaik Babbar. Kishan and Vinod (deceased), as well as four younger siblings, are among his two younger brothers.

Kajri Babbar, Raj Babbar's niece, is a young filmmaker.

Babbar Films Pvt is a production that he founded in his own home; he directed Babbar Films Pvt. Ltd. and his brother Kishan are co-chairs. He has produced two feature films, including Karm Yodha (1992) and Kash Aap Hamare Hote (2003), as well as the serial Maharaja Ranjit Singh (TV series) (2010).
