Reena Roy Life

Reena Roy (born 7 January 1957) is a Hindi Bollywood actress who has appeared in numerous films from 1972 to 1985 and has been a leading actress of the time.

She was one of the highest-paid actresses of her day.

She was known for her glamorous and powerful female roles.

She has been nominated for the best Supporting Actress award for her role in film Apnapan (1977), and she has been nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Nagin (1976) and Aasha (1980).

Personal life and background

Roy was born Saira Ali, the third daughter of Sadiq Ali, a small-time actor and Sharda Rai, who appeared in film Bawre Nain and later produced the film Gunehgar Kaun. Since the parents divorced, she has three children who have all disowned their father. After the divorce, her mother renamed all four children. Roy was originally referred to Roopa Rai, but the name of her first film, Zaroorat, was changed to "Reena Roy." In her youth, Roy began acting in films. She denied allegations that she opted to film to financially support her mother and siblings.

Barkha and Anju, as well as a brother, Raja, have two sisters. Following a publicized love affair with Shatrughan Sinha in 1983, Roy decided to leave film to marry Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan. The couple divorced in the 1990s; Roy found it difficult to cope with Khan's flamboyant lifestyle. Sanam's mother was initially lost, but Roy regained custody after her ex-husband remarried.

Reena Roy Career

Career

Roy was filmed by director B. R. Ishara in Naya Naye Log opposite Danny Denzongpa in 1971, but the film was not released until 1973. Ishara offered Roy the leading role in his second directorial venture, Zaroorat, despite being frustrated with the difficulties. Roy was initially reluctant to choose the project due to its ambiguous subject and potentially violent scenes, but later decided later. Zaroorat was theatrically released in 1972, but Roy's sensual performance was lauded by contrast. Roy's subsequent appearances, as in Jaise Ko Taisa (1973), where she became well-known for the track "Ab Ke Sawan Mein Jee Dare," in which Roy and Jeetendra danced together in heavy rain, were also focusing on her sex appeal. The film was a box-office hit, and filmmakers were encouraged to approach Roy with more significant films as a result of her success with Zakhmee (1975), where she had a supporting role.

Subhash Ghai's action thriller Kalicharan (1976) made her more popular among directors and fans alike, and Shatrugan Sinha, an actor known for his comebacks, was making his first appearance as the lead hero. However, the film defied everyone's hopes and became a surprise hit, and Reena as Shatrugan's love interest drew viewers' attention. They became a popular off-screen couple as well. In the year that followed Jeetendra, she appeared in another hit family drama, Udhar Ka Sindur.

Roy's career-turning point came in 1976, when she appeared in Rajkumar Kohli's thriller Nagin, which featured an ensemble cast including Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra, Rekha, and Mumtaz. She revenges the death of her lover by ruthlessly murdering five leading male actors. The film became a huge hit. Nagin was also lauded by commentators as the year's highest-grossing effort. "Reena Roy as the nagin is unabashed in her sexuality; [...] she portrays a kind of feral sexuality that is rare in its directness," writer Meheli Sen said. At the 24th Filmfare Awards, Roy was also nominated for Best Actress. With the success of Kalicharan and Nagin, Box Office India revealed that Roy established herself as a leading actress of Bollywood. . The Illustrated Weekly of India complained that Roy was used in the film for aesthetic reasons, but the film went on to be a huge commercial success, converting Roy and Sinha into Bollywood stars.

Reena Roy-Shatrugan Sinha formed a popular team after "Kalicharan" and had nine hits off the 16 they did as the lead pair. But it was Reena's chemistry with Jeetendra in 17 marital dramas like Badaltey Rishtey (1978) and Pyaa Sawan (1982) that set her career soaring, not least because she had a chemistry with her. Jeetendra-Reena Roy had 12 box office hits from the 17 films in which they were paired romantically. Apnapan (1977), Aasha (1980), and Arpan (1983) are three of the pair's greatest hits together - Apnapan (1977), Aasha (1980) and Arpan (1983). Reena's touching dance in "Aasha" to the tune of "Shisha Ho Yah Dil" has immortalized her as a symbol of passion and tragedy. In "Apnapan," a dark-shaded actress who abandons her husband and child, earns the Best Support Actress Filmfare Award, beating out Nutan and Asha Parekh. (This was the precursor to Meryl Streep's role in "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979). Reena was disqualified for the award on the grounds that she is the protagonist of the film, not the supporting actor! In the immensely popular "Arpan" series, her screen image as a sacrificing symbol of Indian womanhood is finally glorified. Jeetendra-Reena Roy and her partner have appeared in 22 films together, and in 17 films they were paired romantically. 12 of the 17 films in which she appeared as the heroine to Jeetendra were smash hits.

Roy received critical acclaim for his performance in J. Om Prakash's drama Apnapan, a "gold-digger" woman who leaves her husband (Jeetendra) for a younger but wealthier man (Ifthekar). Vijay Lokapally of The Hindu said Roy "lives the part" and rated her performance as superior to Jeetendra and Sulakshana Pandit's. However, when Roy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 25th Filmfare Awards, she declined to accept it, citing that her role was similar to Pandit's. Roy appeared on the adventure film Vishwanath, opposite Sinha, for the second time in 1978, and she and Rajkumar Kohli reunited for the horror film Jaani Dushman (1979). Both the films became box-office hits. "Reena Roy is easy on the eye and moves with a natural ease in a role that requires little," Film World described her performance in the latter. Shatrughan Sinha, her then rumoured boyfriend, appeared in Raj Kumar Kohli's Muqabla (1979 film) in the same year. Rajkumar Kohli was a student at the University of Reena and churned out top multi-star blockbusters Nagin (1976 film), Jaani Dushman, Muqabla (1979 film) and Raaj Tilak.

In Vijay Sadanah's melodrama Sau Din Saas Ke in 1980, Roy appeared as a rebellious daughter-in-law of Lalita Pawar. Despite the fact that the film was only a moderate financial success, critics lauded Roy's work for praise. Aasha (1980), alongside Jeetendra, in which she played the titular role, was the year's most notable debut of the year. For her role in the film, she was nominated for the Best Actress Award. It was a blockbuster success, as was Manmohan Desai's 1981 release Naseeb, a "masal" film starring Roy and an ensemble cast of Sinha, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and Hema Malini. The film, according to India Today, is "enjoyable but harmful for your health," but Planet Bollywood's Shahid Khan said Roy "leaves a mark in her few dramatic scenes."

Reena Roy, a leading lady in demand in the 1980s, was in demand in four films that became super hits after the box office success of "Aasha," for which she received her second Filmfare nomination as Best Actress. She is the devoted widow who revives the egotistical Rajesh Khanna of Dhanwan (1981 film); the tragic 'actress' who dies on stage for Dharmendra's last'mujra' (1981); and the vivacious psychiatrist determined to cure Vinod Khanna. (1981) Prakash Mehra, Raj Khosla, and Sultan Ahmad were all chosen for important roles. Shatrugan's off-screen marriage ended by 1979. Reena Roy stayed more focused on her work while still at No. 1 in the United States, as she was at the No. By 1980, the earliest positions had risen to the top of the charts. Reena was followed by Rekha, Hema Malini, and Zeenat Aman for the number one position from 1980 to 1983 until Sridevi appeared with a bombardment named Himmatwala (1983 film). In 1981, Roy appeared in a similar leading role alongside debutante Sanjay Dutt and Tina Munim in Sunil Dutt's romance-action film Rocky (1981), which went on to be a financial success.

She had thirteen releases in 1982 alone, much more than any of her opponents. She was not just stealing the show from Rekha in emotional melodramas like Prem Tapasya (1983) and Asha Jyoti, but also fetching the heroine role from the majority of their films, such as Nagin (1976 film), Jaani Dushman (1979 film), etc. This also shows her acting ability and clout over older actresses. Her characters and dances became more varied as she went from classical 'natyam' (1981) to "Disco Station" Haathkadi (1982 film). Karishmaa's 1984, a sophisticated, glamorous model that was equally seductive as the village belle of Dharam Kanta in 1982. Her reputation was enhanced even more by her appearance in the Muslim social, Ladies Tailor (1981), opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Reena's dormant desire to make her voice known in a number of female-oriented films was at the pinnacle of her fame. In Sau Din Saas Ke (1980), she portrays herself as a tyrant mother-in-law defying conventions. She gives a realistic representation of a woman whose past appears to threaten her present marital life with an author-backed role in Bezubaan (1982). However, it was Roy's performance, Lakshmi (1982), that glorified Reena Roy's presence in Bollywood cinema. She dances to her never-ending tragedies while playing the part of a misfortune 'tawaif'. Reena, who had been bemused by Lakshmi's commercial failure, found solace in the sensational success of her second home venture, Sanam Teri Kasam (1982), opposite incoming Kamal Hasan and filmed by her sister Barkha Roy. Prakash's drama Arpan, as well as Jeetendra and Parveen Babi, continued in 1983. After marrying Mohsin Khan in the same year, Roy appeared in T. Rama Rao's action film Andha Kanoon (1983) and the comedy Naukar Biwi Ka (1983) before announcing a sabbatical. She continued to produce hits in the years, and a number of Roy's earlier films, including Kohli's epic Raaj Tilak (1984) and Satpal's drama Do Waqt Ki Roti (1988), were among the many hits in the box office.

Roy returned to Bollywood in 1992 in a senior role as a sister-in-law ('bhabhi') in Aadmi Khilona Hai (1993), but she could not repeat her success of the early days of her career. In J. P. Dutta's Refugee (2000), she made her last film appearance. She has since turned to appearing in television serials, such as "Eena Deeka," which was created by her sister Barkha. The sisters began an acting school in 2004 after the serial ended. Roy has also lobbied for the Indian National Congress.
