Nabil Fekir (born 18 July 1993) is a French professional footballer who plays as either an attacking midfielder or a forward for Real Betis and the France national team. He was promoted to Lyon's senior squad in July 2013 as acade student.
Fekir made his second season as the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.
He made 192 appearances for Les Gones, scoring 69 goals and also winning team captaincy in 2017. Fekir made his international debut in March 2015 and was selected in their squad that defeated the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Personal life
Fekir was born in Algeria to Algerian parents who are originally from Menaceur, a small town in Tipaza, Algeria. While his mother was a social worker, his father retired in France in 1992 and spent a long time in a metallurgical plant. He is the oldest of the family's four brothers. Yassin Fekir made his professional debut at Lyon and then moved with him to Betis. When unable to fast for Ramadan during the football season, Fekir gives to charity.
Club career
Fekir was accepted into the Olympique Lyonnais youth academy at the age of 12, but two years later, he was banned for not being strong enough. He returned to Valiant-en-Velin and continued his youth at Saint-Priest, where he was followed by scouts from around France. At one time, Lyon's local rivals Saint-Étienne were keen to sign Fekir, but he refused to sign him again in 2011. "I wanted to tell Lyon that they made a mistake," he said.
Fekir was included in Lyon's first team squad on July 30th, 2013, but he was unemployed substituted in 1–0 home victory over Grasshopper in the Champions League third qualifying round first leg. He made his Lyon debut on August 28, 2013, swapping Yassine Benzia at halftime in a 2–0 Champions League play-off round second leg away loss to Real Sociedad, which saw the club drop out of the tournament after a 4–0 aggregate defeat. In a 2-0 loss to Evian TG, he made his Ligue 1 debut three days later, losing the entire game. He scored his first competitive goal (in the 23rd minute) against Bastia in a 4–1 home win on April 27, 2014, and aided one goal each for Bakary Koné and Alexandre Lacazette. In a 5–0 away Ligue 1 win over fierce rivals AS Saint-Etienne on Friday, he scored two goals in a 5–0 away Ligue 1 victory. Fekir's second goal in the 84th minute, he took off his shirt and listed his name and number to the Saint-Étienne supporters, who threw objects and spilled out on the field as a result of the gesture. Referee Clément Turpin led the players away from the field and riot police followed them onto the field to restore order. In a virtually empty Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, the game was postponed for 40 minutes until the two teams would play out their final five minutes.
Fekir was part of a prolific forward line alongside Memphis Depay and Mariano; he scored 18 goals, while the Dutchman contributed 19, with the Dominican Republic international totals totaling 18. Liverpool negotiated with Lyon for the transfer of Fekir in June 2018, netting a maximum €60 million. International career
Fekir made just one appearance for the France national youth football team. Fekir was drafted in his ancestral Algeria's squad for friendlies against Oman and Qatar in March 2015. However, he did not qualify for the French squad against Brazil and Denmark because of his injuries. On March 26, 2015, he made his France senior team debut against the former at the Stade de France, replacing Antoine Griezmann for the final 16 minutes of a 3–1 loss. In a 3–4 home friendly loss to Belgium on June 7, he scored his first goal for the France senior team. He made his first appearance for the France senior team in a 1–0 away friendly victory over Portugal on September 4, 2015, breaking three ligaments in his right knee, putting him out of action for at least six months.
Fekir was called back to the senior squad for the first time since being hospitalized for a friendly against Italy and a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Belarus. Due to an injury, he had to withdraw from the squad three days later.
