Early life

Mika was born and raised in Kyushu and was the youngest of three children. She grew up in Hioki, Kagoshima, where she has said there was "nothing there, only enka." She started listening to enka singer Eiko Segawa and learned classical Japanese dance, but she missed out on fashion and make-up because she was too short to be a model.

After graduating junior high and starting working, Nakashima decided not to attend high school and began teaching. She and two others moved to Fukuoka at the age of 15 and lived room-shared there.

Personal life

Kunihiro Shimizu, a female volleyball player from Nakashima, was married on December 25, 2014. Nakashima revealed on February 2, 2018 that she and Shimizu will be divorcing. They were released on amicable terms, with both stating that their time together was "irreplaceable" and that they would remain friends.

She had gone to an audition at the age of 17. She had no idea what it was for at the time. She was selected from 3,000 girls to appear in the fall 2001 Fuji TV drama Kizudara no Love Song (, Tainted Love Song), in which she portrayed the protagonist Mirai Shimazaki and performed the theme song, "Stars."

"Stars" made her debut on Sony Music Associated Records in November 2001, and it would go on to become her best-selling single.

Her second single "Crescent Moon," an 80s themed album, was limited to 100,000 copies. The first day of its introduction, it sold out. In March 2002, she released "One Survive" and her first video collection, "Film Lotus," in honor of her third single. This was followed by her 4th single, "Helpless Rain," in May, and her 5th single, "Will," which went on to gross ups of over 140,000 in August. Both were top ten hits and sold nearly 100,000 copies, demonstrating Nakashima's increasing fame.

True, Nakashima's debut on the Oricon charts in August 2002, was a number one hit. The album featured a mature blend of jazz and modern pop. True has sold a million copies in three weeks and has sold nearly 1,174,000 copies to date. Then, a one-year anniversary of her debut, Nakashima unveiled a Premium EP: Resistance, which climbed to the top of the charts for two weeks in a row. Kiseki: The Document of a Star, a documentary film, was released on December 18, 1999. At the All Japan Request Awards 2002, the singer received the "New Artist of the Year" award at the Japan Gold Disc Awards and "Best New Artist of the Year" awards. The 44th Japan Record Awards' "New Artist of the Year" award was also awarded.

Love, Nakashima's second album, which was released in November 2003, has sold nearly 1.45 million copies, much more than her debut. Love the Best Album Award was given by the Japan Composers Association. Since releasing her second mini-album, Oborozukiyo: Inori, in September 2004, Nakashima topped the Oricon Album Chart again with Music in March 2005, as well as with her first hits album Best in December of that year. Best is Nakashima's third album to have sold a million copies or more, but Best also outsold True in terms of sales, by nearly 30,000 copies.

Nakashima co-starred with Aoi Miyazaki in the live-action film Nana, based on the manga of the same name, which was published in September 10, 2005. She also performed one of the movie's theme tunes, "Nana starring Mika Nakashima" in its original name. The single, titled "Glamorous Sky," was written by Ai Yazawa, a manga's author, and composed by L'Arc-en-Ciel vocalist Hyde. It was Nakashima's only number one single on the Oricon Singles Charts. In 2005, it sold over 423,000 copies, making it the year's best-selling female single. The single stayed well into the next year, selling 444,067 copies, much more than Yuna Ito's "Endless Story."
