Early life
Michael Pitt was born in West Orange, New Jersey, on April 10, 1981, to Donald B. Pitt, an auto mechanic, and Eleanor Carol (née DeMaio) Pitt, a waitress. He has two older sisters and one older brother. Pitt is a product of Italy and Ireland on his mother's side, as well as an English descendant in his father's family line. Pitt had been to three or four high schools, one of which was Morris Catholic High School, and had been attending "unique classes" before dropping out. He spent a short time at the Essex County Youth House, a detention facility.
Personal life
Pitt revealed in 2005 that he had been "engaged for a long time" to model Jamie Bochert, a reference she cites as "my other half." In 2014, the two women announced that they had broken up together. Pitt was previously attached to Asia Argento from 2003 to 2004.
Pitt was arrested and charged with assault and petty larceny after reportedly assaulting another man multiple times and taking his phone. Pitt was hospitalized and deemed "emotionally disturbed" in September after being accused of hurling objects at people from the roof of a building.
Career
Pitt appeared in the film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a 1998 stage musical based on John Cameron Mitchell's version of Tommy Gnosis, the lover of a trans rock star named Hedwig. Pitt's participation in many influential and often controversial films, including Larry Clark's Bully (2001), Murder by Numbers (2001), and Funny Games, a 2007 reimagination of Michael Haneke's 1997 film of the same name, was not his first film role. In Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers, one of Pitt's most notable roles was as the lead.
Pitt attributes his success in films to a combination of hard work and the presence of "a few angels in my life." He has also stated that he does not choose roles in the hopes of seeing commercial success or fame, but rather create art, provoke the audience, and ultimately contribute to a cause that he is proud of: the onset of his fame.
Pitt also appeared in Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and M. Night Shyamalan's The Village in Asia, and in 2005 appeared in Gus Van Sant's Last Days as a rock musician "inspired" by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. He performed all of the songs, which closely resembled Cobain's guitar and singing styles.
Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who had been hired by Van Sant to act as the film's music consultant, was interviewed on the set of Last Days. "Gus] wanted to hang out with Michael and talk about his character, not to be in character," Moore wrote. We ended up spending a lot of time together. "Blake from Last Days" refers to my daughter Coco.
In 2006, he appeared in Delirious, a young homeless man who befriends a celebrity photographer and falls in love with a pop singer. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In Silk, a French silkworm smuggler who is based on Alessandro Baricco's book, Hervé Joncour falls in love with a baron's concubine while in Japan the following year.
Pitt juggled two leading roles, as Tommy Uva in the comedic American crime thriller Rob the Mob and as a molecular biologist investigating the truth about the eye in the science fiction romantic drama I Origins.
Pitt appeared in the film Ghost in the Shell as the evil hacker Kuze in 2017.
Pitt made his Off-Broadway debut in 1999 at the New York Theatre Workshop in The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek.
A casting agent who had mistakenly arrested a police officer on his first appearance noticed him and recommended him for a part of Dawson's Creek's television series. In the third season (1999–2000), he appeared Henry Parker on a regular basis.
In 2010, Pitt was portrayed as Jimmy Darmody in HBO's Boardwalk Empire (about the rise of Atlantic City during the Prohibition period) as the protégé of corrupt politician Nucky Thompson. He appeared on the show's first two seasons and was nominated for a Screen Actor Guild Award and a Critics' Choice Award for his work. "I'm proud of the work we did on that show," Pitt said of the Boardwalk Empire. My grandfather, an Italian-American, visited my grandmother in Atlantic City, and he knew her. Jimmy Darmody stayed with me, and he seemed to be right near to home."
In 2014, he appeared in the NBC series Hannibal, playing Mason Verger in the show's second season. Joe Anderson was fired and was brought to him.
Pitt performed and played guitar in his band, Pagoda, whose self-titled debut album was released by Universal/Fontana/Ecstatic Peace in 2007.
Pitt performed "Hey Joe" with the Twins of Evil on the Dreamers soundtrack under the title Jimi Pitt and the Twins of Evil.
