Tom Cruise Life

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV; July 3, 1962) is an American actor and film director who specializes in Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.

He has been recognized for his work, including three Golden Globe Awards and three Academy Awards.

Cruise is one of the world's best-paid actors, and his films have grossed over $4 billion in North America and over $10.1 billion worldwide, making him one of the top-grossing box-office actors of all time.

He made a critical contribution in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989).

Ron Kovic's role in the latter earned him a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Cruise starred in many commercially successful films, including the comedy A Few Good Men (1992), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994), and the romance Jerry Maguire (1996), for which he received his second Oscar nomination and his second nomination.

His role as a motivational speaker in the 1999 drama Magnolia earned him his third Golden Globe and a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Cruise has appeared in six films of Mission: Impossible film series from 1996 to 2018.

He continued to appear in many science fiction and action films, including Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2004), War of the Worlds (2004), Knight and Day (2011), Oblivion (2013), and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes were married on Cruise.

He has three children, two of whom were adopted following his marriage to Kidman and the other of whom is a biological daughter he had with Holmes.

Cruise is a vocal promoter of the Church of Scientology and its related social services, and he cites the organization with helping him resolve dyslexia.

He caused controversy in the 2000s with his Church-affiliated critiques of psychiatry and anti-depressant drugs, his attempts to promote Scientology as a religion in Europe, and a leaked video interview of him advocating Scientology.

Early life and education

Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 3, 1962, to electrical engineer Thomas Cruise Mapother III (1934–1984) and special education instructor Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer), 1936–2017). His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, and had English, German, and Irish roots. Lee Anne, Marian, and Cass are two sisters on cruises. William Mapother, one of his cousins, has appeared in five films alongside Cruise. Cruises were born in near poverty and had a Catholic upbringing. He later described his father as a "bully" and a "coward" who beat his children. "My father" was the type of person whose life is in jeopardy, and they kick you if something goes wrong." It was a big lesson in my life: how he'd lured you in, made you feel safe, and then bang! It was like, "There's something wrong with this guy," for me. Don't go for him. "Be cautious around him."

Cruise attended 15 schools in 14 years in total. Cruise spent a portion of his childhood in Canada; after his father took up as a defense consultant for the Canadian Armed Forces, his family migrated to Beacon Hill, Ottawa, in late 1971. For his fourth and fifth grade instruction, he attended Robert Hopkins Public School. He first became interested in drama in fourth grade, under drama coach George Steinburg. At the Carleton Elementary School drama festival, he and six other boys performed an improvised play to music called IT. Val Wright, a dramatist, was in the audience and later said, "the movement and improvisation were superb... a classic ensemble piece." Cruise went to Henry Munro Middle School in Ottawa in sixth grade. He and his siblings returned to the United States this year after his father's death. She married Jack South in 1978. In 1984, Cruise's biological father died of cancer. Cruise earned a Catholic Church scholarship and attended the St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio; he aspired to be a Franciscan priest before being barred from the seminary for partying. He became interested in acting as a result of his interest in acting. 24–26 In his senior year of high school, he played football for the varsity squad as a linebacker, but was banned from the team after being found inebriated with alcohol before a game. 47 He went on to perform in Guys and Dolls, the school's production. In 1980, he graduated from Glen Ridge High School in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.

Personal life

Cruise splits his time between homes in Beverly Hills, California; Clearwater, Florida; and the South of England, where Cruise has lived in many places, including Central London, Dulwich, East Grinstead, and Biggin Hill.

Cruise had friendships with Melissa Gilbert, Rebecca De Mornay, Patti Scialfa, and Cher from the early to mid-1980s.

Mimi Rogers, a cruise ship, married actress Mimi Rogers on May 9, 1987. On February 4, 1990, the two couples announced their divorce. Rogers had risen up in Scientology and was one of its 'auditors'; they met when Cruise became one of her clients.' She blamed David Miscavige, the company's leader, for the break-up of their union when she left the company.

Cruise's second wife, actress Nicole Kidman, appeared on their film Days of Thunder (1990). On December 24, 1990, the couple married on December 24, 1990. Isabella Jane (born 1992) and Connor Antony (born 1995). Cruise applied for divorce from Kidman in February 2001 when she was unknowingly pregnant. The pregnancy seemed to have ended in miscarriage, but Kidman denied the allegations in 2007 by announcing that she had indeed experienced an ectopic pregnancy.

Cruise was next romantically linked to Penélope Cruz, his co-star in Vanilla Sky (2001). In 2004, the three-year partnership came to an end. Several reports have reported that after the break up with Cruz, Scientologist chiefs initiated a clandestine effort to find Cruise a new girlfriend, according to an article in the October 2012 issue of Vanity Fair. According to those reports, a string of "auditions" of Scientologist actress Nazanin Boniadi ended in a brief association with British-Iranian actress Nazanin Boniadi, who later left Scientology. Scientology and Cruise's lawyers released a strong worded denial and threatened to sue, accusing Vanity Fair of "shoddy journalism" and "religious bigotry." Roger Friedman, a journalist, later revealed that he had received an email from director and ex-Scientologist Paul Haggis confirming the news.

Katie Holmes, the actress who played Mary Holmes, first appeared on Cruise in April 2005. Cruise and Holmes, dubbed by the media, made their first public appearance together in Rome on April 27 this year. Cruise on The Oprah Winfrey Show revealed his passion for Holmes; he hopped on Winfrey's yellow couch and stood there a month later. Oprah was somewhat surprised by Cruise's outburst, which dethrew from Cruise's planned promotion of Cruise's Cruise's new film, War of the Worlds, according to media reports at the time. Cruise and Holmes announced on October 6, 2005, that they were expecting a child. Suri and their daughter were born in April 2006. In a Scientologist reception attended by several Hollywood celebrities on November 18, Holmes and Cruise were married at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano on November 18. According to their publicists, the couple had "officialized" their marriage in Los Angeles the day before the Italian ceremony. There's a lot of rumors that the Church of Scientology arranged their marriage. David Miscavige, Scientology's chief, served as Cruise's best man. Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise on June 29, 2012. The couple signed a divorce deal on July 9, which was ruled out by their lawyers. All divorce papers must be kept sealed, as a result of the deal's terms are not known. Ex-wife Katie Holmes divorced him in part to shield the couple's daughter Suri from Scientology, according to Cruise, and Suri is no longer a registered member of the corporation.

Cruises were converted to Scientology by Mimi Rogers' first wife in 1986, who later became a vocal advocate for Scientology in the 2000s. In a 1992 interview with Barbara Walters, his involvement in the organisation was leaked by the tabloid Star in 1990, and he publicly admitted to following Scientology. According to Janet Reitman's book Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion, the ship's seven-years-long cruise began studying Scientology, the organization's leaders promised to reveal Scientology information, such as the prophet Xenu. Cruise "freaked out" and took a step back, according to Reitman's book. He removed himself from the church and spent time on the film Eyes Wide Shut until 1995, when David Miscavige told Marty Rathbun how to successfully "retrieve" Cruise and encourage him to keep training. After a few years, Cruise became a full-fledged zealot. Cruise is friends with Scientology group Chairman David Miscavige. Cruise struggled with dyslexia at an early age, and has said that Scientology, especially L. Ron Hubbard Study Tech, helped him with dyslexia.

Cruise has advocated for Scientology to be recognized as a religion in Europe, in addition to promoting various Scientology services. The Council of Paris revealed in 2005 that Cruise had lobbyed French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and Senate President Jean-Claude Gaudin. He was described as a violent spokesman for Scientology and had refused to engage in any further relations with him. He lobbied British Prime Minister Tony Blair to designate the Scientology group as a tax-exempt nonprofit group in the United Kingdom. In the United States, he convinced Bush administration officials, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, and Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Scooter Libby, not to recognise Scientology in Germany in 2003. As part of No Child Left Behind, he spoke with Education Minister Rod Paige about endorsing Scientologist education techniques.

Cruise co-founded and raised funds for Downtown Medical's initiative to provide New York City 9/11 rescue staff with detoxification services based on L. Ron Hubbard's work. Medical professionals and firefighters chastised this report. David Miscavige, a Scientology leader, created the Scientology Freedom Medal of Valor and gave it to Cruise in late 2004. Paul Haggis, a former Scientologist, and Steven Spielberg, converted celebrities such as James Packer, Victoria and David Beckham, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, and Steven Spielberg to Scientology.

Criticism of psychiatry

"I think psychiatry should be outlawed," Cruise said in January 2004. In 2005, actor Brooke Shields was still chastised for using Paxil (paroxetine), an antidepressant that she used to recover from postpartum depression following the birth of her first daughter in 2003. Cruise said that there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance, and that psychiatry is a form of pseudoscience. In reaction, Shields said cruise "should keep the world from aliens" and encourage women with postpartum depression to determine which treatment options are appropriate for them." On NBC's Today on June 24, 2005, Cruise and Matt Lauer became a tense discussion.

Cruise's remarks are seen by medical professionals as exacerbating mental illness's social stigma. "He may be correct that psychotropic drugs are overused and in some cases misappropriated," The Lancet says, and that lifestyle changes (and exercise for depression) may be helpful. However, he is wrong, as a celebrity, to add to the burden of people with a mental disorder, who may have a difficult time seeking or continuing medical attention because of the stigma attached to their illness. Cruise's remarks, Shields, were "a disservice to mothers everywhere." Cruise apologised in person to Shields in late August 2006.

Scientology is well-known for its resistance to common psychiatry and psychotropic drugs that are often prescribed for therapy. Cruise's anti-psychiatry activities resulted in a disagreement with director Steven Spielberg, according to reports. Spielberg was reported to have given the name of a doctor friend who dispensed psychiatric drugs in Cruise's presence. Scientologists picked the doctor's office just a few days after, reportedly angering Spielberg.

YouTube video removal

Cruise's interview with Cruise was shown on YouTube by Anonymous-linked organisation Project Chanology on January 15, 2008. Cruise was asked what being a Scientologist means to him. The video had been "pirated and edited," according to the Church of Scientology, and it was derived from a three-hour video made for Scientology members. YouTube has taken down the Cruise video from their website, citing a threat of lawsuits.

Following YouTube's probe into this claim, they discovered that the video did not violate copyright legislation because it is covered by the fair use clause. It was then revived on the website, and as of June 2020, the video has garnered over 15 million views. Because of the success of the video and subsequent updates to the website's copyright policies, YouTube has decided not to delete it again.

The ostensible presence of Scientology on Cruise is a source of discreditability.

Pat Kingsley, the nation's longest publicist, resigned in March 2004. Lee Anne DeVette, his sister, who was herself a Scientologist, was cruise's next publicist. She was in charge of the government from November 2005 to November 2005. DeVette was recalled by Paul Bloch of Rogers and Cowan's publicity company. Such reorganization was seen as a measure to reduce the exposure of his Scientology views as well as the controversies surrounding Katie Holmes' relationship.

Going Clear: Lawrence Wright's 2013 book Going Clear: Scientology and the Prisoner of Belief and Alex Gibney's 2015 television documentary version of the same name cast a spotlight on Cruise's role in Scientology. Both the book and the film show that the Scientology corporation groomed romance for Cruises and that Cruise used Sea Org and Rehabilitation Project Force employees as a source of free labor. Marty Rathbun, Cruise's former auditor, claims that Nicole Kidman was wiretapped on Tom Cruise's suggestion, which Cruise's counsel denies. Nazanin Boniadi, the cruise's ex-girlfriend, later compared the Scientology group's auditioning of women to the Cruise and her encounters with him.

Tom Cruise Career

Acting career

Cruise moved to New York City to pursue an acting career at the age of 18. After being a busboy in New York, he went to Los Angeles to try out for television roles. He joined CAA and began acting in films. He first appeared in a small part in the 1981 film Endless Love, then in Taps as a crazed military academy student. Cruise appeared in 1983 as part of The Outsiders' ensemble cast. He appeared in All the Right Moves and Risky Business, which has been dubbed "A Generation X classic" and a career maker for Tom Cruise in the same year. He appeared in the Ridley Scott film Legend, which was released in 1985. His fame as a hero had been solidified by Top Gun's 1986 release.

Cruise followed up Top Gun with Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money (1986), which came out the same year and paired him with Paul Newman. "You can tell that both Cruise's and Newman's performances are outstanding pool hustlers," the Washington Post writer wrote. Cruise starred in Cocktail, 1988, a film that was a box office hit but fell short of critics. His appearances earned him a nomination for the Razzie Award for Worst Actor. Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man, Barry Levinson's best film and cruise, received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 1989, Cruise portrayed real-life Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic in Oliver Stone's war epic Born on the Fourth of July. "Nothing Cruise has done will prepare you for what he does in Born on the Fourth of July... His performance is so good that the movie lives through it." Stone is able to make his remarks with Cruise's face and voice, and he doesn't have to put everything into the discussion." The actor received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the People's Choice Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Cruise's first Best Actor Award nominee.

Days of Thunder (1990) and Far and Away (1992), both of which co-starred then-wife Nicole Kidman as his love interest, and The Firm, a critical and commercial success, were Cruise's next films. Cruise appeared in Neil Jordan's Interview with the Vampire, a gothic romance/horror film based on Anne Rice's best-selling book, in 1994. The film was well-received, although Rice was initially outspoken in her dissatisfaction with Cruise's inclusion in the film, as Julian Sands was her first choice. Upon seeing the film, she paid $7,740 for a two-page ad in Daily Variety, lauding her work and apologizing for her old reservations about him.

Cruise in 1996 appeared as superspy Ethan Hunt in the reboot of Mission: Impossible, which he created. Brian De Palma's film was a box office hit, but it was attacked that Jim Phelps' character was a villain despite being a protagonist of the original television series. "Tom Cruise has discovered the right superhero character on which to graft his breathlessly gung-ho screen person," cruise writer Stephen Holden said of Cruise's performance. Cruise played a sports agent in Cameron Crowe's sports drama in which a sports agent in search of love played a sports agent in the same year. Renee Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr. appear on the film. Cruise received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, as well as his second nomination for Best Actor at an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Cruise costarred with Kidman in Stanley Kubrick's erotic and psychological drama film Eyes Wide Shut in 1999. Both Cruise and Kidman were praised by Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian for their writing, "Cruise, in particular, stands out in the open manner in which he pursues everything as an actor." Frank T.J. Mackey, a motivational speaker, appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia (1999), in the same year. "Cruise is a revelation, completely deserving of the shower of superlatives coming his way," Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers wrote on Cruise, "it's devastating." He was given another Golden Globe and a nomination for an Academy Award for his work.

Cruise in the second installment of Mission Impossible films, Mission: Impossible 2. The film was directed by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo and branded with his gun fu style; it continued the series's success at the box office, grossing $547 million worldwide. It was the year's highest-grossing film, with mixed critical receptions. Cruise received an MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance for the film.

His next five films were both critical and commercial successes. Cruise starred in the romantic thriller Vanilla Sky (2001) with Cameron Diaz and Penélope Cruz each year. Cruise appeared in the dystopian science fiction action film Minority Report, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Philip K. Dick's science fiction short story.

He appeared in Edward Zwick's period action drama The Last Samurai, for which he received a Golden Globe award for best actor. Cruise's success in Collateral in 2004 earned him critical acclaim. "Driven by director Michael Mann's trademark images and a lean, villainous appearance from Tom Cruise, Collateral is a sleek and enthralling noir thriller," the report states. Cruise co-star Steven Spielberg in War of the Worlds, a loosening of the H. G. Wells novel of the same name, was the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, earning US$591.4 million worldwide. In 2005, he was a nominee for the People's Choice Award for Favorite Male Movie Star and MTV Generation Award winner. Cruise was nominated for seven Saturn Awards between 2002 and 2009, winning once. During the decade, nine of the ten films he appeared in grossed over $100 million at the box office.

In 2006, he returned to his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible III, a Mission Impossible film film film series. Critics were more favourable about the film than the previous films in the series, and the box office took in nearly $400 million. Cruise played a rare supporting role in Lions for Lambs for the second time in 2007, which was a commercial disappointment. In the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr., there was an unrecognizable appearance as "Les Grossman." Cruise received a Golden Globe Award for her efforts. Cruise was instrumental in Valkyrie's historic thriller, which was released on December 25, 2008, to box office triumph.

Cruise completed filming the action-comedy Knight and Day in which he re-teamed with former costar Cameron Diaz in March 2010. Cruise revealed on February 9, 2010 that he would appear in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible series. The film was released in December 2011 to high critical acclaim and box office success. It was Cruise's biggest commercial success to date, unadjusted for ticket price inflation.

Cruise was given a prestigious award by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance on May 6, 2011 for his work as a dedicated philanthropist. Cruise began shooting Rock of Ages (2012), in which he played the fictional character Stacee Jaxx. The film was released in June 2012 and was a rare box-office mistake for Cruise. "Channeling the likes of Axl Rose and Keith Richards with his tattoos, heavy furs, and even greater eyeshadow, Cruise clearly relishes the opportunity to play against form even as he promotes his world's biggest-movie-star name," a cock-of-the-rock strut depicts that viewers haven't seen since his appearance in Magnolia.

In the film version of British author Lee Child's 2005 book One Shot, Cruise starred Jack Reacher. On December 21, 2012, the film was released. It received favorable feedback from critics and was a box office hit, grossing $217 million globally. He appeared in the science fiction film Oblivion, based on director Joseph Kosinski's graphic novel of the same name. The film received mixed feedback and received $286 million worldwide. Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko appeared in the film as well as Olga Kurylenko and Robert Kurylenko. Cruise starred in the science fiction-action film Edge of Tomorrow, which received rave reviews and grossed over $370 million.

Cruise returned as Ethan Hunt in the fifth installment of Mission: Impossible, a film that also produced in 2015. Simon Pegg as Benji and Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, with Christopher McQuarrie as director. The film received acclaim from critics and was a commercial hit. Cruise appeared in Boris Karloff's 1932 horror film The Mummy, which was based on a theme from his film The Mummy. The latest film, which also titled The Mummy, received poor reviews and flopped at the box office. In 1998, Cruise revived Ethan Hunt in his sixth film in his series Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Critics were more favourable than the previous films in the series, and the film took in over $791 million at the box office. It was Cruise's biggest commercial success to date, despite being unadjusted for ticket price increases.

In May 2020, it was revealed that Cruise would be starring and filming a film shot in outer space. Doug Liman will be directing, writing, and co-producing. Both of them will fly to the International Space Station as part of a forthcoming Axiom Space mission in a SpaceX Dragon 2 spacecraft.

Cruise protested against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in May 2021 by returning all three of his Golden Globe Awards in light of controversies surrounding the HFPA, particularly the lack of diversity, particularly no black members, and ethical concerns regarding financial assistance to some of the organization's employees.

Cruise reprised his role as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, a film he also produced in 2022. Cruise received an Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered. The film received a lot of attention when it was announced, with several reviewers describing it as superior to its predecessor. Following its debut, the film has broken multiple box office records; earning over $1 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of his career. Cruises will earn $100 million for the film, as well as his cut of home entertainment rentals and streaming revenues.
