Lucas Digne Career

Club career

Digne, a born in Meaux, Seine-et-Marne, graduated from Lille, securing his first professional role in three years on July 27, 2010. Digne was promoted to the senior team permanently and given the number 3 shirt ahead of the 2011–12 season. In the Coupe de la Ligue's last 16 of the Coupe de la Ligue, he made his professional debut on October 26, 2011, defeating Sedan 6–1.

Digne extended his contract until 2016. On January 28, he made his Ligue 1 debut at the Stadium Nord Lille Metropole, defeating Saint-Étienne in the final two minutes. As the defending champions placed third in the league, he had a total of 16 appearances.

In the 2012–2013 season, Digne was a regular. On Sunday, he had given Lille the lead in a 3–1 victory at Ajaccio but when his cross was deflected in by Yoann Poulard, he was suspended after an hour for a foul on Matthieu Chalmé. He scored his first goal on 7 April, a penalty in a 5–0 home win over Lorient, and then two weeks later, he scored another to equalize in a 2–1 comeback victory at Bastia.

Digne signed a five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain on a fee that is estimated to be around €15 million. With a 2–1 victory over Bordeaux in Gabon, they became an unreserved substitute as they lifted the 2013 Trophée des Champions. As manager Laurent Blanc revolved his squad ahead of the UEFA Champions League, he did not make his debut until September 13th in a 2–0 win over the same opponents. PSG finished the season with both the league and the league cup championships, but Digne was back-up to Brazilian veteran Maxwell.

In the 2014 Trophée des Champions, Digne played the full 90 minutes, winning 2–0 over Guingamp in Beijing. The Parisians gained all four domestic accolades from 2014–15, with Digne as the sole replacement in their Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue final victories.

Roma, the Italian Serie A club, signed Digne from PSG on a season-long loan contract for €2.5 million, with the option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. In a 2–1 win over title holders Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico, he made his debut five days later and played the entire match. He gave Roberto Pereyra a sarcastic kiss and asked him to check the scoreboard, a gesture likened to one by Roma captain Francesco Totti to Igor Tudor of the same rival in a 4–0 win in February 2004.

In a 5–1 home victory over Carpi on September 26, Digne scored his first goal for the Giallorossi with a close-range header, having earlier assisted Kostas Manolas in opening his account for the club. He went from injury to scoring from 30 meters in a 3–1 victory on February 12th, and Atalanta announced a 3–3 draw on Monday. In Serie A, the team from Italy's capital came third, and Digne confirmed that he wanted the move to be permanent.

Digne joined Barcelona's Spanish La Liga team on a five-year contract on July 13, 2016. According to individual and team results, the fee was €16.5 million (£17.1 million). Digne made his debut for Barcelona in a 0–2 win over Sevilla in the 2016 Supercopa de Espaa first leg on August 14th as a 27th-minute replacement for compatriot Jérémy Mathieu.

In his first season at the Camp Nou, he played in 26 games, with one scoring once against Segunda División B club Hércules in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey on December 21, 2016. Barcelona retained the cup, with Digne missing in the final on May 27, 2017, a 3–1 victory over Alavés.

Digne played 20 times in 2017-18 as Barcelona won the league and cup double under new boss Ernesto Valverde. In a 3–1 home win over Olympiacos in the Champions League group stage on October 18, he gained from Lionel Messi's assist in a 3–1 victory over Olympiacos.

Digne joined Everton in the United Kingdom on August 1, 2018, for a five-year contract on an initial charge of £18 million. He made his debut ten days later, replacing double goalscorer and fellow debutant Richarlison for the last four minutes of a 2–2 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored on his first appearance in a 3–1 EFL Cup victory over Rotherham United on August 29th. Digne got his first Premier League start for Everton against Huddersfield Town four days later, and he assisted Calvert-Lewin in a 1–1 draw.

Digne had been Everton's first-choice left back by the start of October, ahead of veteran Leighton Baines. In the sixth minute of stoppage time at a match against Watford, he scored his first goal for the club on December tensed in a free kick for a 2–2 draw. He scored twice in a 5–1 victory over Burnley, with a free kick and a 30-yard shot. He was sent home in a 1–0 victory over Huddersfield on January 29, 2019 for denying Adama Diakhaby a scoring opportunity with a foul. Digne's first season at Everton culminated in individual awards after he was named Player of the Season by supporters and Players' Player of the Season alongside midfielder Idrissa Gueye, the first time the award had been revealed.

Digne was suspended by Southampton in a 2–0 loss at Southampton on October 25, 2020, for a foul on Kyle Walker-Peters. Referee Kevin Friend referred to it as "serious foul play" which has been suspended for three games, but the ban was reduced to one match on appeal.

Digne told Everton boss Rafael Bentez in January 2022 that he no longer wanted to play for the team and wanted to leave. He had argued with the boss over tactics.

Aston Villa announced the signing of Digne from Everton for a £25 million contract until 2026 on January 13, 2022. In a 2–2 home draw with Manchester United, he made his debut two days later. In a 4–1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the second round of the EFL Cup on August 23, Digne scored his first goal for the team.

International career

Digne, a French youth international, represented his country at the U16, U17, and U18 levels. He appeared in every match during France's 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Istanbul.

He was first called up for the senior team in February 2014, ahead of a friendly match against the Netherlands on March 5th. In a 2–0 victory at the Stade de France, he made his debut in the match as a half-time substitute for Patrice Evra.

Digne was one of 23 people in the French team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, wearing the number 17 shirt. His one appearance for the eventual quarter-finalists was against Ecuador in which he sustained a foul that cost Ecuadorian captain Antonio Valencia a straight red card.

At UEFA Euro 2016, Digne was selected for the French team that finished runners-up on home soil, but he did not participate. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, he was on standby for the team.

Digne was on halftime in the 2–2 group draw with Portugal due to Lucas Hernandez's injury. He was also delayed due to a thigh muscle injury just minutes later. In the last 16 against Switzerland, Deschamps was forced to use an untested 3–5–2 formation, which France lost.

PLAYER RATINGS: One Arsenal star will be bitterly disappointed with himself after 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa… while Mikel Arteta's forwards fail to finish their chances

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 14, 2024
ISAAN KHAN AT THE EMIRATES STADIUM: It may have been a pivotal weekend in the title race, with Mikel Arteta's side failing to make good their opportunity to go two points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, following their 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa.  Leon Bailey smashed a thumping low effort into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 83rd minute of the match after Arsenal failed to deal with Lucas Digne's ball that flew across the face of the goal.  Ollie Watkins would return three minutes later to score a sensational breakaway goal, dinking the ball over David Raya to seal the victory. Aston Villa could have sealed victory earlier in the second half after Youri Tielemans smashed a long-range effort against the cross bar.

With Douglas Luiz's future, Lucas Digne, and Jacob Ramsey's futures, Aston Villa could sell at least one key player this summer after losing almost £120 million in the last year

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 5, 2024
The Champions League-chasing team made £119.6 million for the year ending May 30, 2023, with the next accounting period expected to conclude on June 30 this year. According to the Premier League's profit and sustainability policies (PSR), clubs will forfeit no more than £105 million over a three-year cycle, with points deductions included in the potential fines for doing so.

Manchester is a popular sport, with Phil Foden dronning a derby double for Man City, Bukayo Saka's red-hot form for Arsenal, Bukayo Saka's red-hot form, while Aston Villa's talisman Ollie Watkins scores yet again... who takes first place in this week's POWER RANKINGS?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 5, 2024
To have missed the main talking point of the weekend, you'd have to be living under a rock: Arsenal defeated Arsenal again. A 6-0 demolition of Sheffield United did the trick, and three Gunners have been in our power rankings. Manchester City came from behind to defy a Marcus Rashford beauty and defeat Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad, in no small thanks to Phil Foden's brilliance. Liverpool stayed top after a 99th-minute Darwin Nunez winner, Aston Villa, were jubilant after a late show involving Lucas Digne, and Timo Werner helped Spurs remain in the top four chase. Bukayo Saka was rewarded first place in Mail Sport's power rankings last week, one of football's most coveted awards. Does he keep his spot, or does somebody else sneak in?
