Career
Lady Bunny met RuPaul in Georgia. They were go-google dancers for a time in a band called the Now Explosion. The two, as well as Larry Tee, became regulars on the Atlanta gay scene in the early 1980s. They appeared in a number of low-budget films, including the Starbooty series. RuPaul revealed in the episode of RuPaul's Drag Race titled 'Roast in Peace' that he was the first person to drag Lady Bunny in drag, effectively making him her drag mother. RuPaul and Lady Bunny were both relocated to New York City together later that year.
Lady Bunny and RuPaul shared an apartment for a time in New York City in 1983. They were based at the Pyramid Club. She recalls that she lip-synced Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive and collapsed during the performance, missing her wig and a shoe. Bunny's performance style during this period mixed lip sync, dance, and comedy. Self-deprecating commentary, brief praise of other performers, and brief critique of others were often mixed with short bits of dancing. During this period, she held several odd jobs, including those in an ice cream parlor and in sales for publisher Ralph Ginzburg.
