Josef Martínez Life

Joséf Alexander Martez Mencia (born 19 May 1993) is a Venezuelan professional footballer who plays for Atlanta United FC and the Venezuela national team. Josef Martnez began his work with Caracas.

He was affluent with the Swiss Super League Young Boys in 2012 before spending a year on loan at Thun.

He was sold to Torino, Italy, in 2014, and Atlanta United FC, the Major League Soccer expansion team, was born in 2017. With six games in his first 44 games, he tied for most consecutive games with a goal (15), and the first time a goal was set in a single season (31 in 2018). Martnez made MLS history by winning League MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Golden Boot, and MLS Cup Final MVP in 2018. He is a former Venezuela under 20 years old.

He made his senior Venezuela national team debut against El Salvador in 2011 and has since represented his country in three editions of the Copa América.

Club career

Martnez made his Caracas FC debut against Estudiantes de Mérida in August 20, 2010. He was a replacement when the 70th minute was called out 1–0. On 21 November 2010, he scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against Deportivo Petare.

Caracas announced Martnez had been sold to BSC Young Boys of the Swiss Super League for a period of four years, as well as fellow right-back Alexander Gonzalez. He made his debut against Servette FC on February 5, 2012, which the Young Boys beat 3-1. Martnez was welcomed into the Venezuela national team, as well as his first appearance for the Young Boys, in which he scored his first goal for the Swiss club in the 50th minute against Grasshopper Club Zürich on October 21.

Torino defeated Udinese 5–1 on April 30, 2016, he scored his first brace in Serie A.

Martnez was loaned a purchase option to Major League Soccer expansion team Atlanta United on February 2, 2017. In a 2–1 home loss to the New York Red Bulls on 5 March, he made his league debut on March 5th. In a 6–1 victory over Minnesota United that week, he scored his first career hat-trick and the first hat-trick in the club's history.

Atlanta announced on March 21 that they had enabled the buyout provision for an undisclosed transfer fee. After scoring five goals in his first three games in the league, he was voted MLS Player of the Month for March.

Martnez sustained his left quadricep while playing for Venezuela's national team against Peru on March 23. After more than two months of recovery, he returned to action only to be hospitalized again this summer. In two games against the New England Revolution and Orlando City after his return from the second injury, he scored hat tricks in two consecutive games against the New England Revolution and Orlando City, and was named MLS Player of the Month for September 2017. In the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, Atlanta United finished in a tie for third in the Eastern Conference, but Columbus Crew eliminated them in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. He scored the only goal for the MLS All-Stars in 2018 versus Juventus, a 1–1 draw, and was named MVP.

He scored his 28th goal of the season on August 24, 2018, a game winner in Orlando City, defeating league single-season records of 27, which was held by Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski, and Bradley Wright-Phillips. Martnez used his quick footwork to cut back against the defender and then chip Joe Bendik to record the record in just his 26th match. For August 2018, he was named MLS Player of the Month.

Martnez was named Player of the Month for July on August 6th. He received the award for his nine straight games, tying his own MLS record set set the previous season, which was also shared with Diego Valeri.

On August 23, he set a new MLS record by scoring a goal in 12 straight games. The goal gave his team a 1–0 win over Orlando, his 15th strike in the series, and it was his 15th strike during the streak. Martnez made his first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League against Alajuelense on April 6, 2021, his first appearance since early last season, and he came as a 67th minute replacement. Martnez scored his first goal of the season on a 1–1 draw against Inter Miami on May 9th. Martnez was training away from the team in July 2021, after returning from Copa América, according to coach Gabriel Heinze, but no reason was given. Heinze was suspended as Atlanta United's coach on July 18th, and Martnez played his first match since returning from France on July 21 against FC Cincinnati. In the 1–1 draw, he was used as a substitute.

In the first minute of Atlanta United's 3–2 loss to Orlando City on July 30, 2021, Martnez scored the first goal for the team. In Atlanta's 2–2 draw against CF Montréal, he scored the first goal on August 4th. Following an altercation with Victor Wanyama of Montréal, Martn also received a red card in the 82nd minute. He returned to the team on August 15th, scoring his only goal in a 1–0 home win over Los Angeles FC.

On March 13, 2022, Martnez scored his first goal of the 2022 season. After a second successful knee surgery, he played his first game since April, where he scored a goal and assisted another.

International career

Martnez made his international debut against El Salvador as a replacement in the 76th minute on August 7th.

Martnez scored a hat-trick against Bolivia in a 5–0 victory in Maturn on November 10, 2016 (matchday 11 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification).
