Personal life
Grunge, a neighbor of Chris Benoit, was a colleague of Benoit and helped Benoit deal with Eddie Guerrero's death in November 2005.
Grunge died in Peachtree, Georgia, on February 16, 2006, as a result of sleep apnea problems, which was most likely caused by a coronary artery blockage due to obesity. He was 39 years old at the time. According to other sources, he was visiting a friend at the time of his death where he was unable to breathe. He was morbidly obese and had ingested a substantial number of Soma pills that had been ordered by doctor Phil Astin.
Professional wrestling career
Grunge made his professional wrestling debut in 1987. Grunge formed a tag team in the UWF in 1993 in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with Rocco Rock's The Public Enemy. This was not the first time they had met, but they did not meet again in Austria circa 1991, with Grunge (using the name "Cheetah Kid") losing to Rock (and was masked)).
The Public Enemy, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based promotion that would shortly be renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling, debuted in 1993. The Public Enemy hosted the ECW Tag Team Championship on four occasions between March 6, 1994 and October 28, 1995. While ECW, they were involved in two famous events, the first when the ECW audience hurled folding chairs into the ring until The Public Enemy was submerged, and the second when the ECW audience invaded the ring to commemorate The Public Enemy, with the ring collapsing as a result of the extra weight. They were known for their hardcore wrestling style and use of tables, a gimmick that was later adopted by the Dudley Boyz. In Weezer's song "El Scorcho"; the phrase "watchin' Grunge legdrop New Jack through a press table" was taken from a caption for a photograph of Grunge wrestling wrestler New Jack, which was released in Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
The Public Enemy, which was headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, was promoted to the Atlanta, Georgia, World Championship Wrestling Championship in 1996. They debuted on January 15, 1996, defeating The American Males. The Public Enemy won the WCW World Tag Team Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 23, 1996, but Harlem Heat regained the honors in Canton, Ohio, on October 1, 1996.
The Public Enemy started wrestling in 1999 and briefly competed for ECW before joining the World Wrestling Federation. Both men made their debut on Raw is War on February 22, 1999, but they were released from the WWF two months later. They had worked in the company at Survivor Series 1995, where they were fighting the Smoking Gunns. The Public Enemy returned to WCW and took part in the "Junkyard Invitational" on July 18 at Bash on the Beach in 1999.
They then returned to the independent circuit, as The South Philly Posse, where they were supervised by Jasmin St. Claire. Public Enemy performed for the short-lived i-Generation Superstars of Wrestling among other independent companies in the early 2000s. The team has gained several national tag team titles. Grunge teamed with his kayfabe brother Joey Grunge as The New Public Enemy in August 2003 after Rocco Rock's death in 2002. He also appeared with Pro-Pain Pro Wrestling (3PW) before his last match in 2004. Grunge, who died at the end of 2005, was participating in a memorial segment for deceased ECW wrestlers at Hardcore Homecoming, and at the end of the year, he was gearing up for a comeback. Jason Ray, his uncle who wrestled for Big Japan Wrestling, helped book him for BJW's forthcoming spring tour.
