At 51 years old, Jazz has this physical status:
Carlene Denise Moore-Begnaud (born August 27, 1973) is an American professional wrestler best known by her ring name Jazz.
She is best known for her time with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where she was a two-time WWE Women's Champion.
She was most well-known for competing for the National Wrestling Alliance, where she dominated the NWA World Women's Championship for more than 900 days.
Personal life
Carlene played basketball in high school. She earned a basketball scholarship in college before a knee injury ended her basketball career. She then moved out of college to work.
Carlene is married to Rodney Begnaud, who has also appeared as Rodney Mack in WWE. They live in Lafayette, Louisiana, on 25 acres (100,000 m2) of land. In November 2008, the couple welcomed twin girls named Summer and Skye.
She owns a fitness center, which she says will "keep the kids off the streets and keep them positive." The Dog Pound is also owned by her husband and runs a wrestling school.
She was named in July 2016 as part of a class action complaint brought against WWE, alleging that wrestlers suffered traumatic brain injury during their employment and that the company concealed the dangers of injury. Attorney Konstantine Kyros, who has been embroiled in a number of other lawsuits against WWE, has brought the lawsuit to court. In September 2018, US District Judge Vanessa Lynne Bryant dismissed the lawsuit.
Carlene has slammed WWE's advertising, alleging that they mismarketed her and other wrestlers of color.
Professional wrestling career
Begnaud was asked about starting a career as a professional wrestler after dropping out of college and enrolling in a wrestling school in Louisiana. When she first saw Jacqueline Moore perform, she was inspired to be a wrestler. Begnaud trained with Rod Price for six to eight months, and later made her pro wrestling debut against Moore.
She later joined Extreme Championship Wrestling as part of a group called the Impact Players, which included wrestlers such as Jason Knight, Lance Storm, and Justin Credible. She fought Jason at Heat Wave in 1999 and revived her feud with him. She worked on a regular basis before leaving the company before ECW was closed down due to bankruptcy.
The World Wrestling Federation expressed concern in Begnaud in late 2001, and she was sent by Ohio Valley Wrestling for six months to train. She first signed a two-year deal with WWF under the new ring name Jazz. On a six-Pack Challenge match for the WWF Women's Championship, she made her debut in the organisation as a villain on the Survivor Series pay-per-view, which Chyna had vacated after her departure from the organization. Trish Stratus was ultimately the champion for the competition and the championship.
Jazz introduced her first rivalry with then-Women's Champion Trish Stratus on January 14, the first female contender to Stratus' Women's title. Jazz won the Women's Championship for the first time when she met Trish at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, where she was unsuccessful in winning the crown on February 4, 2002. Jazz defended her title against Lita and Trish Stratus in a triple-threat match on March 17, at WrestleMania X8.
The World Wrestling Federation was renamed to World Wrestling Entertainment on May 6, 2002, subsequently renaming the title to the WWE Women's Championship, and the first woman to hold the Women's title under the WWE banner. On the September 29, Jazz's Bubba Ray Dudley was up for a challenge in the Hardcore Championship, but she didn't win the series, she helped Stevie Richards capture it. Jazz was aided by Richards on the May 6, episode of Raw, after being knocked out by a superkick before the match, but Bubba Ray struck out at a variety of champions from Raven, Justin Credible, Crash, Trish Stratus, and finally regained Richard after being led by Jazz in a hardcore-Rules match the following week, but she lost her title to Stratus due to a fractured ACL in her knee. As she attempted an aided superbomb through a table, she was struck by both Bubba Ray and Stratus.
Jazz returned to Raw on January 27, 2003, shaming Trish Stratus after a Chicago Street Fight for Victoria's Women's Championship, which saw Stratus defeated. She returned to action on February 10 in a singles match against Molly Holly.
On her return to Stratus and Victoria, Jazz became embroiled in the feud between them. She immediately beat Stratus and triumphed in matches against Molly Holly and Jacqueline. At WrestleMania XIX against Stratus and Victoria, she competed in a triple threat match for the Women's Championship, but Stratus walked away with the trophy. During this time, she took on the managerial services of Theodore Long, which culminated in another Women's Championship victory after defeating Stratus at Backlash. At Judgment Day, she had another strong title defense against Stratus, Victoria, and Jacqueline. However, she lost the title in a royal to Gail Kim fight on June 30. Jazz had a chipped and dislocated shoulder during the game and required several weeks to recover. She recovered from injury in early 2004, but she was only used sparingly. Rodney Mack, her real-life husband, became a manager and valet later this year. In November 2004, she was kicked out of WWE due to the creative department's lack of concepts for her character.
She began working on the independent circuit in 2005 and appeared at the unofficial ECW reunion show, Hardcore Homecoming, from January 16, 2005. Jazz and Rodney Mack began Dirtysouth Championship Wrestling, an independent promotion headquartered in Louisiana in late 2005. Jazz also appeared in Women's Extreme Wrestling, where she won the World Heavyweight Championship against Angel Orsini, Mercedes Martinez, and Simply Luscious, when the previous champion, Tai "Killer Weed," was forced to relinquish the title due to injury. Jazz defeated April Hunter to win the NWA Cyberspace Women's Championship, despite being a WEW champion on June 24, 2005.
In 2006, Jazz and Mack were renamed DCW to Downsouth Championship Wrestling. Jazz captured Louisiana State Championships shortly after the promotion's name change. She appeared in ChickFight V on June 24 and made her All Pro Wrestling debut on June 24.
Begnaud, one of many Extreme Championship Wrestling alumni, will be returning to WWE for a limited period of time in 2006. Jazz made her first appearance in WWE since 2004, when she competed against then-Women's Champion Mickie James in a losing match on June 7. Jazz, on the other hand, did not continue an on-screen presence in the brand and made just a few appearances at ECW house shows, which marked her last appearances with WWE. WWE unveiled Jazz on January 18, 2007.
The Queens of Chaos promotion in France had booked Jazz and Rodney Mack in May 2007. Jazz performed in late 2009 in New Jersey, defeating Angel Orsini. Jazz was inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame on March 6, 2010, as part of Dawn Marie and Molly Holly's show on March 6, 2010. Jazz defeated Amber O'Neal unsuccessfully to become the No.1 contender for the WSU Championship at the same time. She continued to compete for the company and with National Wrestling Superstars, where she worked with former ECW star Balls Mahoney in a tournament. Jazz earned a shot at Mercedes Martinez' WSU's third Uncensored Rumble in 2010. On November 5, 2010, Mercedes defeated Jazz in the main event of WSU's inaugural internet pay-per-view feature, "Breaking Barriers," beating Jazz. On March 5, 2011, jazz was defeated by Alicia at WSU's four-year anniversary show. However, she volunteered herself as the mystery partner of WSU Tag Team Champion Marti Belle, whose partner, Tina San Antonio, was wounded in the week before. Marti Belle and Jazz defeated Amy Lee and Cindy Rogers of The Soul Sisters (Jana and Latasha) to become the "new" WSU Tag Team Champions, giving Jazz her first Tag Team Championships. With the "Freebird system," Jazz, Belle, and Tina will be able to defend the belts, where any two of the three players could compete. Marti and Tina would lose their belts before Jazz was able to have a defense. Jazz had been slated for a rematch but had to cancel due to personal reasons.
Jazz took part in the inaugural Shine Wrestling event Shine 1 on July 21, 2012, where she was awarded the Legacy Award from Diva Dirt, a women's wrestling website. Jazz was interrupted by Mercedes Martinez during the award ceremony. In the main event, Jazz defeated Sara Del Rey. In the main event of Shine 2, which ended in no-contests, Jazz met Martinez on August 17. Jazz would face Saraya Knight for the title at Shine 4 after defeating Rain on September 21 at Shine 3. After an interference from Martinez and Rain, Jazze lost her first game at Shine against Knight on October 19, as a result of Martinez and Rain. Jazz and Amazing Kong teamed up on November 16, defeating Martinez and Rain at the main event and avoiding the clash with Martinez and Rain in the process.
Jazz defeated Ivelisse in a Shine Championship tournament qualifying match on April 19, 2013, but Jazz skipped the competition for undisclosed reasons, as this was her last appearance on Shine. Jazz unsuccessfully challenged Ivelisse for the Shine Championship at WWNLIVE's A Wrestling Odyssey event on April 4, 2014.
As part of Team Original Trios Rebellion, Jazz made her debut for Chikara on September 2, 2016, alongside Victoria and Mickie James. In their first round match, they defeated Team Shimmer (Candice LeRae, Crazy Mary Dobson, and Solo Darling). The Warriors Three (Oleg the Usurper, Princess KimberLee, and ThunderFrog) cut Team Original Divas Revolution from the tournament the following day.
Jazz captured the NWA World Women's Championship from Amber Gallows at NWA Texoma on September 16, 2016. Jazz successfully defended her championship against Penelope Ford on October 21, 2018, the NWA's first pay-per-view in years. Jazz continued to defeat championship candidates such as Allie, Jordynne Grace, and Thunder Rosa through her career. Jazz had been scheduled to defend her crown against Allysin Kay on April 27, 2019, but Jazz had to cancel the title on April 22, 2019 due to medical and personal reasons. This was the end of a 948-day title reign. Jazz's reign as the champion marks the third longest tenure in the company's history, right after Debbie Combs and The Fabulous Moolah.
Jazz performed in the Casino Battle Royal at All Elite Wrestling's All Out on August 31, 2019, but she was not successful because she was unveiled by ODB.
Jazz held the SWE Women's Title until August, when she lost the SWE Fury Women's Championship to Miranda Gordy. In September, she officially retired from SWE Fury and became the first SWE Fury Hall Of Famer. In San Antonio, Texas, James Beard and Teddy Long presented the award.
Despite being rescued on Impact Wrestling's November 24, 2020, Jazz made her debut on Impact Wrestling, revealing she would join Jordynne Grace at the Impact Knockouts Tag Team Championship Tournament because she wanted to retire on top of her career by winning the championship with Grace. In the first round, they would defeat Killer Kelly and Renee Michelle, but they were disqualified in the second round by Havoc and Nevaeh. They defeated Grace at Genesis in a match at Genesis, and they met Team Champions Fire N Flava in Sacrifice, where they were defeated. Impact Wrestling's final match took place in Hardcore Justice, where she met Deonna Purrazzo for the Impact Knockouts Championship in a championship vs. career match. Grace and her new friend, Rachael Ellering, began to work as a manager after a farewell segment on Impact Wrestling's April 15th edition.
