Javier Colon (alternately named Javier Colón, born April 29, 1978) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist.
He has referred to his style of music as "acoustic soul." He was a member of EmcQ and The Derek Trucks Band and spent time with many artists before going solo.
He was signed to Capitol Records from 2002 to 2006, referred to as artist Javier in Washington.
However, the deal was ended in 2006, and Javier Colon became an independent artist under his own name, Javier Colon Music.
In 2011, he was the king of the inaugural season of the NBC, The Voice, and he received $100,000 and a recording deal with Universal Republic Records.
Javier Colon eventually decided to leave Universal Republic for a life.
Early life
Colon was born in Stratford, Connecticut, the son of a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. His father worked at a radio station. He began writing songs at Frank Scott Bunnell High School in Stratford, Connecticut. At the University of Hartford's Hartt School, then obtained a degree in music education. In EmcQ, a soul/funk band led by lead guitarist Ian McHugh and mainly dedicated to Stevie Wonder's legacy, Javier served as a vocalist and percussionist while studying.
Music career
Eric Krasno, the group's guitarist, was captivated by Javier's voice and recommended him to his friend Derek Trucks, who was searching for a lead vocalist for The Derek Trucks Band when EmcQ opened a show. Javier joined the band in August 2000 following his college graduation and a fruitful audition in July 2000.
After being with the band for nearly two years, Javier, who was then 24 years old, left the band in April 2002 to pursue a solo career, having been signed by Capitol Records. He went on to record two albums with Capitol Records, the first named Javier in 2003, and the second, entitled Left of Center in 2006.
Javier has performed with such diverse bands as Joss Stone, Darius Rucker, the Indigo Girls, Stevie Nicks, Adam Levine, and Anthony Hamilton, as well as his own label, Javier Colon Music. Javier's main instruments are steel and nylon stringed acoustic guitars made by Larrivée (guitar firm) and Taylor Guitars on stage. On Vanessa Williams' debut album, The Real Thing, he was featured as singer and songwriter for the song "October Sky."
