Hugh Keays-Byrne (born 18 May 1947) is an English-Australian actor and film producer.

He came from Australia in 1973 and is well-known as a television and film actor.

He is best known outside of Australia for his role as Toad, the main antagonist in the 1979 film Mad Max's "Immortan Joe," as the main antagonist toecutter in the main antagonist "Immortan Joe" in Mad Max's main antagonist "Immortan Joe" in the science fiction television series Farscape.

Early life

Keays-Byrne was born in Srinagar, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (British Raj then, India now) to British parents; his family returned to Britain after India was partitioned. He began his work as a stage actor. He appeared in Royal Shakespeare Company productions, including As You Like It, The Balcony, King Lear, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, Doctor Faustus, The Man of Mode, Troilus and Cressida, Bartholomew Fair, and Bartholomew Fair between 1968 and 1972, including As You Like It, King Lear, Hamlet, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night In 1970 to The Revenge

Personal life

Keays-Byrne and his companion Christina were long-time residents of Lisarow. They were also members of the Macau Light Company, an artist group based in Centennial Park. Painting, poetry, and gardening were among his hobbies.

Career

Keays-Byrne made his first television appearance on the British television show Boy Meets Girl in 1967. He appeared in Peter Brook's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which toured Australia in 1973. After the tour ended, Keays-Byrne decided to stay in Australia. He appeared in the television film Essington (1974) and then made his first film appearance in the motorcycle film Stone (1974). This was followed by supporting roles in films including The Man from Hong Kong (1975), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), The Trespassers (1976) and Snapshot (1979).

Keays-Byrne was the violent gang leader Toecutter in Mad Max (1979), after his first appearance in the 1978 television movie Death Train. Since there was no money for airline tickets, director George Miller brought Keays-Byrne and the other members of the gang from Sydney to Melbourne in a group on motorcycles. Keays-Byrne was dubbed with a bad American accent in an early international print of the film, something Miller later regretted.

Keays-Byrne went on to appear in post-apocalyptic and science fiction films including The Chain Reaction (1980), Strikebound (1984), Starship (1985), and The Blood of Heroes (1989). He made his directorial debut in 1992 and appeared in the film Resistance. He also appeared in television miniseries adaptations of Moby Dick (1998) and Journey to the Earth's Centre (1999).

Keays-Byrne appeared in the science fiction television series Farscape (1999–2003) and its conclusion, 2002: The Peacekeeper Wars (2004). In the upcoming 2009 film Justice League: Mortal, George Miller also played him as the Martian Manhunter.

In the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, Keays-Byrne appeared as the principal antagonist, Immortan Joe. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning 6, and Keays-Byrne was nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.
