Jai Stephen Courtney (born 15 March 1986) is an Australian actor.

He started his career in small films and television series before being cast as Charlie in Jack Reacher (2012).

He went on to act in A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) and I, Frankenstein (2014), and The Exception (2016). In the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), Courtney appeared in a recurring role as Varro.

Eric was cast in Divergent (2014), and in 2015, he reprised his role in the sequel, Insurgent.

In the 2016 film Suicide Squad and the 2021 sequel The Suicide Squad, Kyle Reese appeared in Terminator Genisys and DC Comics villain Captain Boomerang.

Early life

Courtney was born on March 15th, a suburb of Sydney's Cherrybrook. Chris' father, Robert, worked with a state-owned electricity company, and Karen, a teacher at Galston Public School, where Courtney and his older sister were students. Courtney played rugby and was active in the drama club at that time. He then attended Cherrybrook Technology High School and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 2008. Courtney took a ballet class in college but failed.

Personal life

A rope, a skull, and a dog are among the courtney tattoos on display. Margot Robbie, a Suicide Squad co-star, and Courtney have both gotten a tattoo of Robbie's home state Queensland, as well as a one that reads "SKWAD" to honor his film work. Courtney's first appearance in a 2005 short film titled Boys Grammar, which also starred Daniel Feuerriegel and Adam J. Yeend. He appeared in Packed to the Rafters in Australia, then as a guest lead in the critically acclaimed All Saints, To Hell & Bourke, and several short films. In 2010, he appeared in Spartacus: Blood and Sand for ten episodes before appearing in Jack Reacher and A Good Day to Die Hard with Bruce Willis as John McClane's son, Jack. He appeared in the films I, Frankenstein, and Felony in 2014.

In the science fiction film Divergent (2014), Courtney played Eric, one of the faction's leaders. He appeared in Unbroken, playing Hugh "Cup" Cuppernell, and The Water Diviner, playing Lt. Col. Hughes later this year. In Insurgent, a sequel to Divergent that was released in March 2015, Courtney revisited Eric's role. Kyle Reese, one of the leads of the science fiction action film Terminator Genisys, appeared in the same year. He served on both Insurgent and Terminator Genisys simultaneously. Terminator Genisys received unfavourable reviews and performed poorly at the box office, as a result. Courtney was described as "too buff and bland" in Emperor Dan Jolin's review, Reese's role as Reese.

Courtney decided to appear in Captain Boomerang in the 2016 DC Extended Universe film Suicide Squad in March 2015. Critics blasted the film, with Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post describing Courtney "noly registers" in his role. Despite this, the company had a very profitable box office. In the production of Macbeth by the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2017, Courtney played the titular character. Cameron Woodhead of The Sydney Morning Herald praised his "imperfect command of the verse." In the thriller film Honest Thief, which was released in October 2020, Courtney played a corrupt FBI agent. Alonso Duralde of TheWrap praised his role as a villain. In The Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad, Courtney revisited Captain Boomerang. The film was released in August 2021 to a largely positive critical reaction. Courtney is expected to appear in Black Site's action thriller film Black Site, as well as the thriller series The Terminal List and Jigsaw.
