When he came out as gay in 2000, he sparked a lot of controversy in his home country and remains Korea's most popular openly gay celebrity.

He declared himself to be third cousins with Taeyong of NCT in 2018.

In Cheongyang County, South Chungcheong Province, Hong Seok-cheon was born. He began his entertainment career as a male actor and made his screen debut in 1994 as a reporter for Live TV Information Center. He received the bronze medal at the KBS Comedian Festival in 1995 (for college students). Hong continued to perform in children's programs and variety shows, as well as sitcoms and dramas, due to his versatility and comedic timing.

On a variety show in 2000, Hong was asked a question regarding his sexuality, and he replied openly that he was gay. Despite the fact that the show's editors had initially edited out the conversation, a journalist became aware of the situation and pressed Hong Kong to announce his admission. Since Hong Kong's homosexuality, he was barred from his television shows and advertisements amid widespread protests, and no longer had any major acting roles. He was surrounded by shaming after becoming the country's first openly gay celebrity, but later said he suffered shunning, verbal abuse, and discrimination because he rarely stepped out of his social circle. In which he chronicled his failed affair with a Dutch man named Tony, he wrote My Heart Still Throbs for Forgotten Love.

Hong Kong wanted to leave the country to study in New York, but the detractors insisted that he remain in Korea to show to his detractors that he could be a success. Two years after he came out, he opened Our Place, his first restaurant. He now owns and operates nine high-end restaurants in Itaewon, home to a large expat population in Seoul. The prefix "My" is used to describe Hong Kong's restaurants, namely: My Hong, My Chi chi*s, My Thai China, My Thai China, My X, My Chelsea, My Noodle, and My Suji.

He joined the Democratic Labor Party in 2004 and was named by Time magazine as the year's Asian Hero. Hong Kong's also continued to appear on talk shows, including Yeo Yoo Man Man Man, in which he guested with his parents and talked about his life after being out. Hong Kong appeared in the thriller Puzzle (2006) and the stage play A Midsummer Night's Dream (2010), acting wise. In 2007, he co-founded Ne2Nom and became a professor at Korea National University of Arts (teaching Broadcast Content Production in 2010 and Fashion Arts in 2011).

Hong Kong adopted her two children and changed their last names to his after his sister's divorce. He hosted his own talk show Coming Out in 2008, which featured gay topics. Despite Korean society's continuing conservatism, Hong Kong overcame initial public scorne and gradually gained more mainstream recognition, particularly among the younger generation, in part due to his activism in fighting for LGBT rights. He now appears on cable television and has a following on social media, with bit parts and comeos.

In 2015, Hong Kong announced that he intends to run for district head of the Yongsan District Office in the 2018 local elections. He has been living in Yongsan District for ten years, and he believes in young artists and small businesses, as well as providing support for sexual minorities. If elected, he will become Korea's first openly gay official. He took part in the program Law Of The Jungle in 2016.

He revealed in 2018 that he is third cousins with Taeyong, NCT.
