Gary Life

Kang Hee-gun (born February 24, 1978), better known as Gary (often spelled as Garie), is a South Korean rapper, singer, record producer, and television presenter.

In addition to being a solo artist, he's also the rapper and lyricist of the former hip hop duo Leessang.

The band has released eight albums and had several hits under their belt since its inception in 2002.

Gary made his solo debut with the mini-album Mr.Gae in 2014.

Despite the fact that the album was censored by all major television broadcasters for its 19+ content, his songs nevertheless dominated several charts.

Jung In & Gary formed the pair later in life with him and a long-time collaborator Jung-in.

The two bands "Your Scent" and "Bicycle" were released on their respective singles. Gary has been seen in Psy, Baek Ji-young, Lee Hyori, Dynamic Duo, and MC Mong's work, in addition to his own work.

He is also a veteran cast member of Running Man.

Early life

Gary was born on February 24, 1978. "Gae" (meaning "dog" in Korean), which he adapted to become his stage name after deciding between "gaemi" (ant) and "Gary" (Gary). He was more interested in dancing than rapping in his youth. Gary revealed that he entered a dance competition and ultimately won, defeating other competitors, Jang Woo Hyuk and Moon Hee Jun, who then became members of H.O.T. Lee Soo Man scouted all three boys and offered them a contract with SM Entertainment. Gary, on the other hand, turned down the bid. Gary was accepted as a bodyguard at Yong In University and trained as a bodyguard. For ten years, he was an amateur boxer.

Personal life

Gary revealed on his social media page on April 5, 2017 that he had married a non-celebrity woman named "Miss Kim" who worked at Gary's company for 5 years before their marriage. Kang Ha-oh, the family's first child, was born on October 15, 2017.

Gary Career

Musical and film career

Gary joined X-Teen, a hip-hop band where he met his future Leessang companion, Gil, in 1997. Gary appeared on the band's debut in 1998 before being dropped with Gil. Gary said in an interview that they didn't have neither the appearance nor the talent that made them leave the company.

Gary and Gil followed "Honey Family" and released two albums in 1999 and 2000. Gary played a part in the company's demise by saying he "started feeling like a celebrity" following the company's initial success. Gary, Gil, and fellow Honey Family member Diggity decided to form "Leessam Trio" ("three" in Korean). In 2000, they released 2000 Korea, a compilation album. When Diggity left the company, Gary and Gil changed the name to LeeSsang.

Leessang was designed by Gary and Gil in 2002. So far, the group has released eight albums with numerous hits. Despite the fact that the duo's early albums achieved critical success, they stayed underground. Hexagonal, Asura Balbalta, and Unplugged were three of their last three albums, and they paved their way into the mainstream Korean music industry. "Turn Off the TV"'s title song managed to remain at the top of the Melon chart for 25 days in a row.

Gary joined Running Man, an urban variety show, as a co-host alongside six other original cast members, including Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, Ji Suk-jin, Kim Jong-sook, Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Kwang-soo, and Song Joong-ki, only female actor afterward, although Song Ji-hyo joined the cast a few episodes later. Gary and the rest of the cast members gained international recognition thanks to Running Man's fame.

Gary's resignation, who wanted to concentrate on his music after being a regular participant for almost seven years, was announced in October 2016. Episode 324 was his last filming with the main cast. However, he made a brief appearance in the following episode 325 as a guest.

Gary appeared on episode 336 of Member's Week in January 2017.

Mr.Gae, a Swedish musician, released a mini album in January 2014. The album was unsuitable for broadcasting by three main TV broadcasters, MBC, KBS, and SBS, for various reasons, including explicit lyrics and being too sexually provocative. Despite the ban, Gary's title song "Shower Later" debuted at number one on eight real-time music charts, despite the ban.

Gary later discussed the ban, saying he was trapped by his appearance and wanted to break the mold.

Gary and Jung-in's first collaboration "Your Scent" was released in May 2014. Gary wrote the lyrics, but Jung-In and Duble Sidekick produced the music. Despite not having live streams, Gary and Jung-In won on June 7 Music Core. The Gaon Chart debuted as the year's top single position in the national digital single rankings, owing to its fame. In September 2014, the two launched their second collaboration, "Bicycle."

Gary released his second solo album, 2002, in September 2015. "Get Some Air" featuring Mi-woo of Leessang Company is the album's title track. Several other songs on this album included Koonta, Deepflow, Skull, Jay Park, DJ Pumkin, Park Myung-ho Double K, Don Mills, Jung-in, John Park, and Young-jun of Brown Eyed Souls.

Gary released a single called "Lonely Night" in January 2016, starring Gaeko of Dynamic Duo. On the same day, a music video was released starring actress and fellow castmate of Running Man, Song Ji-hyo. Gary was first selected as a no. 1 contender on SBS Inkigayo on January 10, 2016 and has since been voted champion of the competition.

After a three-year broadcasting absence, KBS announced Gary that he will be joining the cast of The Return of Superman on January 6, 2020. Until Gary and his family were on the show until they were out of town in December, they did not appear again.

Million Market announced that they had signed a non-exclusive deal with Gary through his company Double 8. When Gary first appeared as a cast member of The Return of Superman, labor talks were concluded.
