Shamele Mackie (born March 5, 1978), better known by his stage name Papoose (), is an American rapper and songwriter who performed and sold his own mixtapes during the early 2000's, and he eventually met DJ Kayslay, who helped him sign a $1.5 million deal with Jive Records.

The Nacirema Dream was shelved on his debut studio album, and DJ Kay Slay and DJ Kay Slay severed ties with Jive.

This resulted in him releasing numerous free mixtapes between 2006 and 2013, giving him a massive fanbase in underground hip-hop.

He signed a Fontana Distribution contract in 2012 and then unveiled his debut album on March 26, 2013.

Early life

Shamele Mackie was born on March 5, 1978. He was born in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and has roots from Liberia. His grandfather gave him the nickname "papoose" because of his resemblance of a baby to a Native American child.

Personal life

Papoose is of Liberian and Cameroon descent, according to his mother's side. He is the uncle of multi-platinum manufacturer Pi'erre Bourne.

Papoose is home to two children with ex-girlfriend Yvetta Lashley, Dejanae Mackie, born in November 1996 and Shamele Mackie, born in 1999. Destiny, his son, was born in September 2000.

While she was imprisoned, Michael Perry exchanging wedding vows with rapper Remy Ma over the phone. They officially married in February 2016 in a formal event that was included in Love & Hip Hop: New York's sixth season's season finale. On December 14, 2018, she gave birth to Reminisce Mackenzie, the couple's first child together.

Papoose made his rap debut on Kool G Rap's Roots of Evil in 1998. He released his debut single, "Thug Connection," in 2004, which featured the b-side "Alphabetical Slaughter." Select Records gave him an eight-album contract, which he turned down.

After a stint at Rikers Island, Papoose began manufacturing and selling mixtapes on his own, one of which he showed to DJ Kay Slay outside the Hot 97 office in New York, who later invited Papoose into his radio show. Kay Slay, a painter who was captivated by his portrayal of "Alphabetical Slaughter," has signed him to his Streetsweepers imprint. Papoose continued to produce mixtapes at a rapid rate, over a dozen between 2004 and 2006, and 2005 received the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist. During this period, he became affiliated with Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad, appearing on "Touch It"'s remix.

Papoose revealed on August 24, 2006, he had signed with Jive Records in a $1.5 million contract. The Nacirema Dream was his debut album. Kay Slay and Papoose had left Jive in September 2007, saying that they had "almost (became) victims of A&R hell." Papoose continued to publish his work independently, with nine mixtapes between 2007 and 2012. Despite not releasing an album, Papoose said on the 2009 mixtape 21 Gun Salute.

Papoose has signed a contract with Fontana Distribution to bring his debut album The Nacirema Dream after seven years of development and 27 mixtapes in all. The album debuted on March 26, 2013, to enthusiastic comments from music critics and a debut at number 97 in the United States. Billboard 200. It was preceded by Mavado's single "On Top of My Game."

Papoose "crashed" the Summer Jam with the help of Top Dawg Entertainment, who co-produced "Get At Me" with Ron Browz. In a remix of the song, Papoose took offense to Kendrick Lamar's claim of "King of New York" and dissed him. During the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher, Lamar called Papoose's reaction "comical" and fired shots back at him. Papoose responded on October 4, 2013 by stating that Lamar will never be able to shine my shoes blatantly" and that he would not debut another dissident track on a forthcoming mixtape.

Hoodie Season was his first mixtape since his debut album on November 4, 2013. Hoodie Season 2 and Cigar Society will be released in two more mixtapes before revealing his second studio album, You Can't Stop Destiny, on July 17, 2015.

Following the release of Remy Ma from New York State prison in 2014, the couple joined the cast of VH1's Love & Hip Hop: New York for its sixth season after receiving "an invitation they couldn't refuse" after being rewarded. He has appeared on television shows seven and eight seasons before being promoted to the main cast in seasons nine and ten. He appeared in Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies, as well as in Remy & Papoose: A Merry Mackie Holiday, Dirty Little Secrets, and The Love Version. Papoose released the song "Black Love" in honor of his friendship with Remy as a result of his appearance on the show.

Papoose's third studio album, Underrated, was released on February 15, 2019.
