Frances Langford Life

Julia Frances Langford (April 4, 1913 – July 11, 2005) was an American singer and entertainer who was active during the Golden Age of Radio and appeared on television for more than two decades.

Early days

Langford was born in Hernando, Florida, a small town in Citrus County, to Vasco Cleveland Langford and Anna Rhea (Newbern). The family later moved to Mulberry, a tiny community south of Lakeland, where Frances grew up. She graduated from Lakeland High School and studied music at Florida Southern College, which also in Lakeland. She was a diminutive five-foot-one-inch (155 cm) tall. Contrary to the example in paragraph 2, and although her mother was a Newbern, her name did not include the word 'Newbern.'

Personal life

Langford married three times, first to actor Jon Hall (1934–55). The Martin County Board of County Commissioners awarded 20 acres (81,000 m2) of land near her estate in Jensen Beach, Florida, which was named Langford Hall Park in 1948. Located in 2369 N.E. It is located just south of the Stuart Welcome Arch and is one of the county's major parks.

Langford was lauded in 1946 by Lakeland, Florida, for her participation with the United Service Organizations (USO) and her singing and acting careers. The Lake Mirror Promenade was named in the Frances Langford Promenade by the City of Lakeland. The Promenade was built in 1928 and was designed by New York's renowned landscape architect Charles W. Leavitt.

After moving out of Hollywood, she revived her passions of boating and sport fishing. She married Outboard Marine Corporation president Ralph Evinrude as a nightclub actress in 1955. They lived on her estate in Jensen Beach, which has since been replaced by a housing development company, and they built The Frances Langford Outrigger Resort, Langford's former residence, where Langford often appeared. Locals and celebrities descended on the area. It's still open under the name of the Dolphin Bar and Shrimp House, and a number of Frances Langford's memorabilia are on display. Evinrude died in 1986. Langford married Harold C. Stuart in 1994, who had served as Assistant Secretary for Civil Affairs of the United States Air Force (1949–51) under President Harry S Truman. They spent the summers at Baie Fine in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada, exploring from their Florida home on their 110-foot yacht The Chanticleer, which became a popular tourist attraction after moored at the Outrigger Resort.

In the last year of her life, health issues plagued her, requiring frequent hospital stays. At the age of 92, she died at her Jensen Beach home from congestive heart disease. She was cremated and the ashes strewn off the coast of Florida near her house, according to her wishes. Stuart lived Langford (who had no children) and died in 2007 at the age of 94.
