Charles Trenet Life

Louis Auguste Trenet (18 May 1913 – 19 February 2001) was a French singer-songwriter.

He was best known for his recordings from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, but his career continued into the 1990s.

Trenet wrote prolifically and refused to record anything other than his own songs during an age in which it was unprecedented for singers to write their own scripts.

Early life

Trenet, a French entrepreneur, was born in Avenue Charles Trenet, Narbonne, Occitanie, France. Françoise Louise Constance (Caussat) and Lucien Etienne Paul Trenet's son was born in Occitanie, France. His parents divorced and he was sent to boarding school in Béziers when he was seven years old, but he returned home just a few months later, suffering from typhoid fever. He developed his artistic skills during his convalescence at home, including painting and sculpture.

Trenet returned to Perpetu, this time as a day student. André Fons-Godail, a water-colourist friend of the family, would bring him out painting. His poetry is said to have the artist's eye for detail and color. Many of his songs featured places near Narbonne, the Pyrenees, and the Mediterranean coast.

In 1927, he received a baccalauréat with high marks. He went to Berlin, where he studied art, and then briefly studied at art schools in France. When Trenet first arrived in Paris in the 1930s, he worked as a props handler and assistant and later joined the artist in Montparnasse. Trenet's songs were influenced by his admiration of the surrealist poet and Catholic mystic Max Jacob (1876-1944) and his obsession with jazz.

Charles Trenet Career

Later career and death

Despite this, Trenet made a comeback in 1981 with the release of a new album devoted to sentimental memories of his childhood. Trenet resumed to his sombre semi-retirement in Occitanie, with occasional returns to a special gala performance in France or elsewhere. Trenet was persuaded out of retirement by a French-Canadian lawyer, Gilbert Rozon, in 1983 at a farewell concert in Montreal. Rozon became Trenet's boss later on, and as a result, Trenet gave many more concerts, including a series every night at the Palais des Congrès in Paris in 1986.

He returned to the music scene with his album Les poètes descendent dans la rue on May 21, 1999 (Poets Take to the Streets). Trenet returned to the live circuit following the album's debut.

After suffering a stroke in April 2000, Trenet was rushed to the hospital. Since recovering, the singer was forced to spend many weeks in the hospital, but by the fall of this year, he was fit enough to attend Charles Aznavour's formal rehearsal at the Palais des Congrès on October 25. This was his last public appearance.

In November 2000, the Narbonne home in which Trenet was born, which had morphed into 13 Avenue Charles Trenet, was turned into a small museum. Visitors were able to view souvenirs from Trenet's childhood and family life (especially those belonging to his mother, who had spent the majority of her life in the house), as well as original drafts of the songs that had never been produced.

Trenet died three months later after suffering another stroke on February 19, 2001.

In 2017, a service center on the A9 autoroute between Narbonne and Béziers was renamed in his honor and hosts an exhibit eliciting his life and works by Pascale et Thierry Delorme.
