Florian Thauvin Career

Club career

Thauvin, a native of Orléans, competed for youth teams at Ingre, Saint-Jean-de-La-Ruelle, Orléans, and Grenoble before advancing through the ranks and attracting the attention of larger clubs. In a 1–1 Ligue 2 away draw against Vannes on March 11, he made his first team debut for Grenoble. After being relegated to the CFA 2 in July 2011, Grenoble was relegated to the CFA 2 after its liquidation in July 2011.

Thauvin departed the club on July 19th and signed his first professional deal with Bastia, Corsican side Bastia. In a 3–1 victory over Bordeaux on October 28, 2012, he scored his first goal for Bastia. In 2012, he guided Bastia to a Ligue 2 crown win.

Thauvin signed a four-and-a-half year contract with Ligue 1 club Lille on January 29, 2013 for a reported €3.5 million. He was immediately sent back to Bastia on a six-month loan contract, keeping him at the top-flight Corsican club until the 2012–13 season. Thauvin was named Young Player of the Year following his stellar debuts this season.

Thauvin signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille on September 3, 2013, after weeks of drawn-out talks and without making a single appearance for Lille. Due to controversies over a new deal, the 20-year-old had been ruled out of training and culminated in a transfer to the Stade Velodrome, eventually netting for €15 million, which included bonuses.

Thauvin was the only Marseille player to miss out in the penalty shootout after being barred from the Coupe de France last 64 by fourth-tier former club Grenoble on January 4, 2015. Thauvin made 81 appearances in two seasons, scoring 15 goals.

Thauvin joined Newcastle United in a five-year contract for a reported £15 million, with Rémy Cabella heading in the opposite direction to Marseille on a season-long contract with the option to buy. Thauvin was given the number 20 shirt of Cabella, which was in effect until yesterday. In the 69th minute of a goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, where he had a chance to score a winner but was unable to reach a cross, he made his debut three days later, replacing compatriot Gabriel Obertan. In a 4–1 home win, he made his first appearance for the club against Northampton Town in the League Cup second round on August 25th, scoring a goal and making three assists.

Alan Shearer, Newcastle's all-time top scorer, was chastised for turning up to a game wearing a tuxedo. He told L'Équipe in February 2016 that the criticism was unjustified and affected his results.

Newcastle revealed on January 31, 2016 that Thauvin would return to Marseille on loan for the remainder of the season. He was suspended ten minutes after arriving at Montpellier as a replacement in a foul on Hilton on Sunday in the first game of his loan. He scored the only goal on 20 April.

Thauvin started his second loan term in Marseille on August 4th, signing a season-long loan contract; Newcastle introduced a clause in the contract that gave Marseille the ability to make the contract permanent. After Marseille agreed to pay £9.8 million (€11 million) for Thauvin's permanent loan in November 2016, it was announced in November 2016 that the loan spell would be permanent in the summer of 2017.

Thauvin captained Marseille for the first time in the 2016–17 Coupe de France round of 64 away matches against Toulouse on 8 January 2017, which Marseille defeated 21-01. He scored two goals in the 3–0 Ligue 1 home victory over Angers on March 10, bringing his total number to four goals in his last four Ligue 1 matches to four. With three goals and two assists, he was the UNFP Player of the Month for March. In a 5–1 away victory over Caen on Sunday, Thauvin scored his first hat-trick of his senior club career and assisted in one of Maxime Lopez's two goals.

Thauvin defeated Metz 6–3 in home victory on February 2nd, with another hat-trick. He won two more Player of the Month awards for November and February, and he finished the 2017-18 Ligue 1 season with 22 goals, behind only PSG's Edinson Cavani for top scorer. He was one of four contenders for the Player of the Season award, which ultimately went to Neymar, the Parisians. He played four goals in fourteen games for the team, losing the final to Atlético Madrid in Lyon.

Thauvin was France's fourth-highest scorer in 33 games in 2018, but Marseille finished fifth and missed out on European football, with a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Amiens on November 25. He was released two months later in a 2–1 home loss to Lille. He was ruled out of ankle ligament surgery in September 2019, but it was later in March that the season was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thauvin scored the only goal of an away victory over Paris Saint-Germain on September 13, 2020, giving Marseille their first victory in Le Classique since November 2011.

Thauvin signed with Tigres UANL, a Mexican team, on May 7th, 2021, following his release from Marseille in June 2021 and reuniting with former Marseille teammate André-Pierre Gignac. He made his Tigres debut on August 7, 2021 vs. Santos Laguna after competing in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. In the 35th minute, Thauvin was dismissed.
