Chen revealed in October 2016 that she and her first child, Alvin Lai, who is a Malaysian, were 6 weeks pregnant. Their child, a boy, was born on April 12, 2017. On social media, she first revealed her son nine months after his birth. He appeared at the S.H.E 17th anniversary concert as a surprise visitor later this year.

Career

HIM International Music hosted a "Universal 2000 Talent and Beauty Girl Competition" on August 8, 2000, in the search of new artists to register under their banner. Ella discovered that her older sister had registered her for a singing competition when she and her sister went to Taipei for a holiday. Ella almost gave up before the first round, fearing that her tomboy personality would be mocked. Her older sister, on the other hand, persuaded her to stay. Ella's deep voice caught the label's attention, and she advanced to the final round. Her alto voice was praised for its strong and beautiful appearance.

Ella returned to her duties at a local hospital after the conclusion of the competition, but HIM International contacted her after requesting an additional audition. Ella joined HIM's newest girl group, S.H.E., after testing recordings were conducted. The 'Ella', which means courage, is derived from a personality assessment carried out by HIM Management Co. HIM workers were concerned that the signature would be forged due to its simplicity, and, as a result, Ella signed autographs using the last letter of her name in S.H.E. (pinyin: huà). Ella reverted to her simpler, English signature as S.H.E.'s autograph sessions attracted larger audiences.

Ella stayed away from filming for two days to recover, whose highlights included shaven hair on both sides of her head.

Ella shot Ji Pin Da Zhan, a Chinese New Year Drama in Shanghai, which required her to film one month in a row, from Taiwan to Taiwan, from Shanghai to Beijing, Taiwan to Singapore, to support her group's activities in her home country.

Take Me Out with Harlem Yu, Chen's previous dating show, first broadcasting on April 13, 2013. At the 49th Golden Bell Awards, she and Yu were nominated for Best Entertainment TV Show Host, as well as Yu.

Chen appeared as a judge in Season 2 of China's reality singing television show Masked Singer.

Chen was a vocal mentor on Produce 101 China, which premiered in 2018. Chen took part in Season 2 of the Chinese survival show Youth With You, also known as Idol Producer Season 3, as a vocal coach alongside Cai Xukun, Lisa, and Jony J.
