Donita Sparks Career

Career

Sparks met Suzi Gardner in 1984 and they established L7's creative foundation by 1985. Sparks and Gardner met at LA Weekly, but at different times, and were early participants in the Echo Park/Silver Lake area where they began writing together, but not at the same time. Sparks credited mutual acquaintances at LA Weekly for introducing her to Gardner, who claimed that the magazine was a cultural hub of performance artists, writers, and musicians, as well as writers Vaginal Davis and Johnathan Gold on staff at the time.

L7 released seven original studio albums between 1985 and 2019. Recognized for subverting and surpassing the aspirations of performers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Renée Crist's article on Spin in 1993 called L7 "four of the funniest, meanest, most piss-off women I know" and "wild, rambunctious, spontaneous" with a stage display that "is a wash of buddy love, crowdworking, and acrobatics."

Sparks appeared in John Waters' film Serial Mom as a singer and performer in the fictitious band "Camel Lips" in 1994.

Donita Sparks and the Stellar Moments were released in February 2008, Sparks' debut solo album Transmiticate as Donita Sparks and the Stellar Moments. Sparks' performance was described as high energy with a commanding stage presence, according to the Boston Globe in a June 2008 review.

Sparks and Kristin Hersh co-founded CASH Music (Coalition of Artists and Stakeholders) in 2008 as a way to independently publish their own music; the non-profit group has expanded to include marketing and publishing services for musicians that are open source.

Sparks' music has appeared in the films Natural Born Killers, Brokeback Mountain, Perks of Being a Wildflower, and in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Rock Band 2.

Lou Man Group, a tribute band to Lou Reed and the Blue Man Group, is also a drummer for the tribute band.

L7 was founded in 2014 and embarked on a reunion tour in 2015. Original footage and interviews with Donita Sparks were included in the documentary L7: Pretend We're Dead, directed by Sarah Price, which was released in November 2016. The film was nominated for a VO5 Award for Best Music Film by the film's creators.

Sparks continues to perform live shows with the original L7 line-up, and Suzi Gardner co-wrote two new songs with Suzi Gardner, 2017 and I Came Back to Bitch, 2018, which were not released as singles.

Scatter the Rats, L7's latest full album, was released on Blackheart Records on May 3, 2019. Sparks gave a number of interviews to explore the company's history and discussing the challenges and triumphs over the years. Starting on May 10, 2019, the band resumed a six-week national tour.

The intentionally angular Flying V, which she described as "something from the Jetsons," is sparks guitar of choice.

Sparks appeared in March 2019 as part of a panel discussion with Henry Rollins, Marky Ramone, and John Lydon following a screening for Epix docuseries Punk. Sparks retained her composure and humour as the conversation between Lydon and Ramone erupted, citing both the Sex Pistols and the Ramones as sources of inspiration in her youth.

Sparks' The Hi-Low Show With Donita Sparks, a new show that debuted every Friday starting in April 2020, according to Rollingstone. Sparks and special musical guests will appear on the weekly show.
