Early life

Canova Rivero, a Florida actress and singer, was born Diane Canova Rivero to actress and singer Judy Canova and Cuban musician Filberto Rivero. She was raised in the Los Angeles area, where she graduated from Hollywood High School. Canova later studied acting at Los Angeles City College.

Personal life

Canova is married to record producer Elliot Scheiner. Two children live with the couple. She was formerly married to Geoff Levin from 1976 to 1979 before they divorced in 1979. Scheiner and Steve Landesberg dated before marrying Scheiner.

Canova is a member of the Church of Scientology, a group she has since criticized. In a Premiere magazine interview, she found the Scientologists straightforward in their money search, saying, "The first time I walked through those doors, they said, 'Just give us all the money in your bank account." "They're telling you, don't spend $100 an hour on a shrink's couch, it'll ruin your mind," she said of the Church's counseling service, which she also referred to as auditing."

Canova made her television debut in a 1974 episode of Happy Days portraying a much older date of Richie; in reality, both she and Ron Howard are the same height at 5'9." She appeared in television shows later in Chico and the Man and Starsky and Hutch. Canova later played Corinne Tate on Soap, alongside Katherine Helmond as her mother. She stayed with the series until 1980. Canova was known for her singing during Perry Como's Early American Christmas program in 1978. The performance was shot in Williamsburg, Virginia, and featured John Wayne, as well as musical numbers interwoven with storytelling. Stephanie Wolf, a 1979 undergraduate who appeared on Barney Miller as nude dancer/graduate student.

Canova, an ABC executive, was given the opportunity to film her own television show in 1980, alongside Danny Thomas in I'm a Big Girl Now. The program lasted just one season. Foot in the Door, a short-lived CBS sitcom, co-starred Mary Anne in 1983. She appeared on Throb, a sitcom that was televised in syndication from 1986 to 1988, a few years later. She appeared in three episodes of the long-running television show Murder, She Wrote, from 1984 to 1996, including being featured as Maggie McCauley in 1990's "Murder: According to Maggie." Canova co-starred in Home Free on ABC in 1993 (which also featured Marian Mercer, her co-star from Foot in the Door). She has mainly done voice work for cartoons in video shorts since the mid-1990s. In 1995, she appeared in "Jenny" in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Company.

Canova, an adjunct professor of voice at Purchase College in New York, and she teaches private lessons as of 2015. She has been working with the Easton and Redding, Connecticut, theatre company, where she directs musicals and short plays as well as a high school improv troupe that performs at local charity festivals. Joel Barlow High School's theater program has received numerous awards from the Connecticut Drama Association, and has a record for winning first place twice in a row.
