Dohnyale "Deni" Hines, an Australian solo artist who has been touring since the 1980s, has won gold in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe, with chart success in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe.

She is Marcia Hines' niece. In 1971, Hines released her first single with the Australian band Rockmelons, a cover of Bill Withers' 1971 hit "Ain't No Sunshine."

She then went out alone with the top five single "It's Alright" and the top-five album Imagination (1996), which has clocked in over 55,000 copies worldwide, and then went to release solo material.

"Remix Your Imagination" became a "remix" album, which featured brand new tracks.

Water for Chocolate, the artist's third studio album, was released on August 19, 2006, and it includes songs such as "Water for Chocolate," "Son of a Preacher Man" and "5 Days of Rain."

Both the pair appeared at sold out shows in Australia. Her fourth studio album The Soul Sessions was released on November 18, 2016 with the lead single "What About Love," co-written by Hines and Edward Said. In 2019, Hines took on the The Masked Singer under Unicorn's alias.

She was disqualified from the finals this week and ended up fourth.

Music career

Hines was born in Sydney, New South Wales, and was inspired by her mother's popularity as a singer to pursue a career in show business. She was discovered by a friend while performing on the radio and then was encouraged to pursue singing as a profession. Before she was approached by the band Rockmelons to provide vocals for several of their songs, her oldest work was as a back vocalist for artists like Kylie Minogue (her Rhythm of Love Tour, Australia and Far East 1991). "Ain't No Sunshine" was the first song to be released by Hines as a result of the Bill Withers 1970s' hit "Ain't No Sunshine" in 1991. The album was a hit on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, with the song debuting at number five. "That Word," the reggae-inspired "That Word" debuts, the first single's success (L.O.V.E.)" follows. It was the second song to be released as part of the collaboration and became another top-five hit, peaking at number four in Australia. The ballad "It's Not Over" was the third and final song that Hines performed with the band. The album was also a hit, but it was not as popular as the previous two, peaking at number 15 in Australia. Hines became one of Australia's most popular faces and voices as a result of his success with the Rockmelons.

In 1992, entrepreneur Harry M. Miller signed Hines for the role of Mary Magdalene in a revival of the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Miller had found and signed her mother Marcia twenty years earlier, and Mary Magdalene had also played a significant role in Marcia's early successes. Deni Hines was well liked in the role but left the theater the following year. In 1992, Hines recorded "Not Enough Time" on INXS, achieving number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100; a year later, she married the band's guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly.

Hines was signed to Mushroom Records and released her first solo album, "It's Alright," in 1995 after three hits with the Rockmelons. The album debuted at number four on the Australian ARIA Singles Charts, and it was named "Breakthrough Artist – Single" by the ARIA Award. "Imagination" was introduced at the beginning of 1996 and soared to number 37. Hines' debut album Imagination debuted on May 27, 1996; it debuted at number 15 on the Australia ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for two ARIA Awards; with two songs from the album. The album's third and fourth singles, "I Like the Way" and "I'm Not in Love" (a cover version of a tencc song), but they didn't reach the top ten in Australia.

Hines travelled to the United Kingdom in 1997 and reissued her album Pay Attention and Toured with Lighthouse Family and Earth, Wind & Fire, in order to market her album internationally. In 1997, "It's Alright" was released in the United Kingdom and was well-received, peaking at number 35 on the singles charts, with "It's Alright" at number 35. In France, the track also ranked at number 22. "I Love the Way," "Joy," and "Delicious" were among the hits that followed. With "Joy" and "I Like the Way," two of the top 20 of the United States, Hines cracked the U.S. dance charts in 1998. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts. Remix Your Imagination, a remix album by Hines, was released. This collection featured the song "Dream Your Dream," which was also popular in Japan.

Hines produced a cover version of Grace Jones' "Pull Up to the Bumper," the soundtrack for the 2000 Australian film The Wog Boy. A Soca version of the same song performed 18 years ago by a different name Hinds (Alison Hinds "Pull Up" – Barbados Crop Over 2018).

Hines' "Greatest Hits" album ("A Delicious Collection") was released in 2002, based on contractual obligations with her then-music company Festival Mushroom. In 2003, she spent time in France with Hip Hop artist I:AM, in addition to co-writing a track, "Welcome," for which Beyoncé Knowles performed in I:AM's launch.

Hines spent the bulk of her time in 2004 and 2005 with her then-fiance Ben Steel. Jarrad Rogers, Vince Pizzinga, and others were among Hines' writing for her brand new album in the United States. In early 2006, Hines appeared in the stage musical Dusty Springfield's Lesbian Lover (a composite character representing a number of Dusty Springfield's lesbian lovers) before touring Australia until September 2006. Dusty: The Original Pop Diva was worth $20 million at the Australian Box Office.

"Water for Chocolate," Hines' single written by the Family Standout, was published in Australia on August 8, 2006, and only topped the top 100, peaking at number 28 on the Australian Urban Singles Chart. On September 19, the song was accompanied by an album of the same name, which was released on August 19. Throughout 2007, two more popular singles "Son of a Preacher Man" and "5 Days Of Rain" were released.

In 2007, she collaborated with trumpeter James Morrison on an album of Jazz standards, The Other Woman. Hines and Morrison performed an Australian National Theatre tour to nearly sell out audiences and received an ARIA award for their "Best Jazz Album." They've also appeared at major festivals such as the Christchurch Jazz Festival and the Darling Harbour Jazz Festival.

In 2008, she and Christine Anu collaborated for the charity "Takin' It to The Street." A live DVD with bonus audio CD was released in February 2009, marking their second national tours.

In mid-2008, Hines received a call from famed film producer Bruce Beresford and decided to appear in a small part in Mao's Last Dancer. On October 1, 2009, the film was released.

Hines was the ambassador for Oasis Africa Australia, where she visited the foundation's village and school in Kibera, Kenya, in October 2010. Hines began recording a world music-style album starring some of the local musicians and the children's choir from the Oasis Africa School while still living in Ethiopia.

Hines reunited with Tamsin Carroll, from Dusty – The Original Pop Diva, in July 2010; a series of shows called Dusty the Concert attracted over 20 hits. There were 16 shows on the program.

Hines released "Finger on the Trigger," a Donna Summer hit on July 9, 2011. Its uptempo funky vibe, produced by Rob Taylor and DJ Alex Taylor, has struggled to get dancefloors moving and bombed on the charts.

The Celebrity Apprentice Australia appeared in October 2011. She was dismissed after completing task 3, in which her team raised $47,400 for Oasis Africa Australia, but the team's final episodes on Team Unity brought her back to life.

Daniel Moses, a Sydney-based financier, proposed to Hines on July 31, 2012. This was exclusively reported in New Idea magazine's Issue 35. They were married in Sydney on December 23, 2012.

Throughout 2013, and 2014, Hines performed the 'Café Soul Sessions' tour around Australia, and the idea of a soul-inspired album was born. From December 2014, the Soul Sessions were available only from her website. The Soul Sessions were released digitally and physically on November 18, 2016. It was the lead single "What About Love," which was written by Hines and Edward Said, on November 18th. "I Got Your Back" and "Runnin" are two other Hines co-writes on the album, as well as two others.
