David Roback Career

Career

In the early to mid-1980s, Roback was active on the Paisley Underground indie music scene in Los Angeles, as the band Rain Parade, which was popular on the local club circuit, was on the radio. Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, Roback's debut album in 1983, left Rain Parade to attend Rainy Day, a group of other artists from the Paisley Underground. In 1984, their first and only album, which also featured contributions from Kendra Smith of The Dream Syndicate, was released. Roback and Smith formed Clay Allison in 1985, transforming the band's name to Opal by the time they released their debut album, Happy Nightmare Baby.

Smith adamantly left the band when they were part of a tour opening for The Jesus and Mary Chain while promoting the album. Hope Sandoval was on her way to be on stage, but this group never released an album; instead, they renamed the band to Mazzy Star in 1989. She Hangs Brightly (1990), So Tonight That I Should See (1993), and Among My Swan (1996), the 1994 film "Fade into You" went on hiatus, a Mazzy Star released three albums in the 1990s: She Hangs Brightly (1990), So Tonight That I Should See (1993), and Among My Swan (1996), both making their commercial breakthrough with the 1994 single "Fade to You" before going on hiatus.

Roback wrote and recorded music with other musicians in the years that followed: among other things, he recorded songs on Beth Orton's 1999 album Central Reservation and appeared on Bert Jansch's 2006 album The Black Swan. In the 2004 film Clean, Roback wrote and produced the songs performed by actress Maggie Cheung. In addition, he appeared in the film himself. He spent a large portion of his later years in Norway, where he performed with several musicians and created original music for art installations. In 2013, Mazzy Star's fourth studio album was reissued along with Sandoval's third album release, followed by the 2018 EP Still, which was launched with a three-night stay at the Sydney Opera House. Roback had been working with Kendra Smith on the re-releases of Happy Nightmare Baby and a set of Opal EPs titled Early Recordings, both of which are "imminently" scheduled for release via INgrooves prior to his death.
