Early life and career
Adamson was born in Manchester, England, to Scottish parents Anne (née Muir) and William Adamson. His family moved to Crossgates, about a mile east of Dunfermline, Fife, when he was four years old. Both parents expressed an interest in folk music, and Adamson's father, a world trade executive, encouraged his son to read literature. Adamson received his formal education at Beath High School.
Adamson began playing rock music during the British punk rock revival of the 1970s, founding Tattoo in 1976 after seeing The Damned at a gig across Edinburgh's Firth of Forth. Besides Adamson, Tattoo featured William Simpson, who would also play bass guitar in their next band, Skids, which began playing in the local area and Edinburgh.
