Vernon Alphonsus Reid (born 22 August 1958) is a British-born American guitarist and songwriter.

Reid, the founder and principal songwriter of the rock band Live Colour, was named No. 1. "Reid's] rampant eclecticism spannes everything from heavy metal and punk to R&B and avant-garde jazz, and his anarchic, lightning-fast solos have been a hallmark as well."

Reid was born in London, England, to Caribbean parents, but he was raised in New York City. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and then New York University.

Career

He first came to fame in the 1980s with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's band. Bill Frisell, a guitarist, was a co-star of Smash & Scatteration in 1984. Reid co-founded the Black Rock Alliance in 1985 with journalist Greg Tate and producer Konda Mason.

Reid is best known for his brand, Living Colour. Early versions of the company were founded in 1983 in New York City, but the company's workforce grew from 1985 to 1986, and Reid ruled the organization for the remainder of his tenure.

Vivid's debut album was released in 1988 and has sold double platinum. Time's Up was released in 1990 and was gold-certified. They have been nominated for two years in the category of Best Hard Rock Performance. They opened the Rolling Stones' 1989 "Steel Wheels" tour; they also appeared on the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991.

Living Colour was established in 1995 but it was revived in 2000. Since then, they have released three more albums: Collidescope on October 2001, The Chair in the Doorway, and Shade on September 2017, Megaforce Records.

Reid has been involved in a variety of other ventures in addition to his role with Living Colour. In 1996, Mistaken Identity, his first solo album, was released, and he has worked with choreographer Bill T. Jones on Still/Here and Donald Byrd on Jazztrain. At the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) with The Roots, he performed "Party 'Til The Time" at the end of the 2000 millennium tribute to Prince's album 1999. A BAM children's program was also created and performed "Bring Your Beats."

Reid has also worked as a record producer, with two Grammy-nominated albums: Papa (1999) by African singer Salif Keita and Memphis Blood (2001) by guitarist James Blood Ulmer. No Escape from the Blues, 2003, Birthright (2005), and Bad Blood in the City: Reid also produced The Piety Street Sessions (2005).

Reid also appears on Guitar Oblique (Knitting Factory), with guitarists David Torn and Elliott Sharp. Reid was also included in BAM's "Magic Science" exhibition in Seattle, which featured Medeski Martin & Wood and the Gil Evans Orchestra's interpretation of Jimi Hendrix's songs.

Reid composed the score for the film Paid in Full, directed by Charles Stone III (well known for making the "Wassup"). A collection of Budweiser commercials as well as producing three videos for Living Colour) and Miramax's fall 2002 release of a series of commercials. Reid also wrote the score for the celebrated documentary Ghosts of Attica (directed by Brad Lichtenstein), which aired on Court TV in the fall of 2001 and has been shown at numerous film festivals. He produced the score for another documentary directed by Lichtenstein, Almost Home, which premiered on PBS' Independent Lens in 2006.

Reid and DJ Logic, who also went by the name "Yohimbe Brothers," released a back-end lifter in September 2002. Since the album's debut, the Yohimbe Brothers have been touring on and off. Reid also served as the music supervisor for Mr. 3000, starring Bernie Mac and directed by Charles Stone III; the film was released in September 2004. Vernon Reid and Masque's album Known Unknown (Leon Gruenbaum – keyboards and Samchillian, Hank Schroy – drums), an instrumental album released in April 2004, and Others True Self was released on Additional Unknown by another guitarist, Steve Valiant.

Reid has a long history of sessions in a variety of settings. He has appeared on television or on record with The Roots, Eye & I, Mick Jagger, Ambitious Lovers, Spearhead, Spearhead, Public Enemy, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Tracy Chapman, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Don Byron, Defunkt, Santana, B.B. King, Madeleine Peyroux, Meridiem, Jack Bruce, Terry Bozzio, Black Sugar Transmission (Reid solos on the title track of 2009's USE IT EP) and DJ Spooky are among the featured artists on this page.

Reid appeared at the Lincoln Memorial in New Year's Eve 31 December 1999, New Year's Eve, and January 2000, "Fortunate Son" with John Fogerty. President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton were among those in the audience, as well as First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Reid, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and G. Calvin Weston at Tonic in New York and Tritone in Philadelphia, who went on to become Free Form Funky Freqs in March 2007. Urban Mythology Volume One, the band's debut album, was released in 2008.

Vernon Reid formed a one-off solo band for his appearance at the G-TARanaki Guitar Festival in Taranaki, New Zealand, with keyboard player Jonathan Crayford, bassist Crete Haami, and drummer Magesh Magesh Magesh Magesh. Vernon performed an all-star jam with Uli Jon Roth, Gilby Clarke, and Alex Skolnick at the Puke Ariki "Midnight Session" concert.

Reid appeared in a series of Blue Note Club tribute concerts to Tony Williams' Lifetime in Japan in 2008, as Jack Bruce, Cindy Blackman, and John Medeski performed a few. On the US jazz record label Palmetto, the collaboration produced Spectrum Road, a self-titled album on June 21, 2012. Throughout June and July, a string of dates at major jazz festivals in North America and Europe was supplemented by a series of dates.

Reid joined Mascot Label Group in 2018. In 2019, he will debut an album.

Reid debuted his semi-monthly broadcast on the streaming radio station Home in 2017. Reid's performance "An Underground Railroad of the Mind" on his website features him performing vinyl songs from his collection.

Reid and his partner, Gabri Christa, a choreographer and filmmaker, and their daughter Idea (born June 30, 2003) reside in Staten Island, Gabri Christa.
