Christopher Hemsworth (born 11 August 1983) is an Australian actor.

He rose to fame in the Australian television series Home and Away (2004–07) before beginning a film career in Hollywood by appearing in the science fiction film Star Trek (2009) and the thriller A Perfect Getaway (2010). Hemsworth continued to act in Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), the war film Red Dawn (2012), the comedy Ghostbusters (2016), and the Men in Black film series spin-off Men in Black (2019).

His most well-known roles include the comedy thriller The Cabin in the Woods (2012) and the biographical sports film Rush (2013), in which he portrayed James Hunt. Early life

Christopher Hemsworth was born in Melbourne on August 11, 1983, to Leonie van Os, an English tutor, and Craig Hemsworth, a social-services counsellor. He is the second of three sons after Luke (born 1980) and before Liam (born 1990); both of them are actors. His maternal grandfather is a Dutch immigrant and his maternal grandmother is of Irish origins; on his paternal line, he is of English, Scottish, and German origins. He was born both in Melbourne and in Bulman, Northern Territory. "My earliest memories were on the cattle stations up in the Outback, and then we returned to Melbourne and then back there and then back to Melbourne and then back out there and then back to Melbourne and then back out there and then back to Melbourne." He has said. Certainly the majority of my childhood was in Melbourne, but it was likely that my most vivid memories were of being up there [in Bulman] with crocodiles and buffalo. "All walks of life are very different." Before his family returned to the Northern Territory, he attended high school at Heathmont College, and then moved to Phillip Island a few years later.

Personal life

After meeting through their mutual representatives, Hemsworth began dating Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky in early 2010. They married in December 2010. The couple have two children, India Rose, who was born in May 2012, and two brothers, Sasha and Tristan, who were born in March 2014. In 2015, the family moved from Los Angeles to Byron Bay, New South Wales, in his native Australia.

In the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours, Hemsworth was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

In the ensuing year, he appeared in a episode of The Saddle Club. Hemsworth auditioned for Robbie Hunter's role in Australian soap opera Home and Away in 2004. He did not get the job, but he was recalled for Kim Hyde's portion. He went to Sydney to be with the cast, appearing in 171 episodes of the series. On July 3, 2007, he joined Home and Away. Hemsworth remarked later that although he became more visible after Home and Away, his work on a soap opera did not make him money in the film industry, and he didn't receive it.

Hemsworth appeared on Dancing with the Stars Australia's fifth season, alongside professional dancer Abbey Ross. Hemsworth was unveiled on September 26, 2006, and after six weeks, Hemsworth was ruled out on November 7th. As the creators of the Marvel film franchise feared that fans would be turned off, Hemsworth's appearance in the franchise would almost cost him the role of Thor.

In the first scenes of J. Abrams' film Star Trek in 2009, Hemsworth played James T. Kirk's father, George Kirk. Matt Damon's role was initially offered to him but Abrams loved him for it; Abrams praised Hemsworth for the role. Josh Tyler of Cinema Blend was wowed by Hemsworth's performance, who described his appearance as the "best five minutes I've spent in a movie theater this year." The film was a box office hit, grossing US$385.7 million. Hemsworth played Kale Garrity in the film A Perfect Getaway, the same year. It was a modest success, grossing US$22 million against a US$14 million budget, and receiving mixed feedback, but Hemsworth was lauded for his "appropriately threatening" appearance of a "thuggish backpacker." Hemsworth's performance was also praised by Screen Rant's Paul Young, who described his work as "solid."

Hemsworth appeared in Ca$h, 2010, alongside English actor Sean Bean, it was the first film he shot in the United States when he first arrived in the country. Hemsworth had only been in the United States for six weeks when he had auditioned for the role, saying, "Here's a young, has the right appearance, and, let's face it, he's beautiful." We need to get this guy in, so I say. "I was incredibly impressed" on him. Hemsworth, one of the young male actors whose "pushing – or being forced" onto the Hollywood "A-List in November 2010, was named by the Hollywood Reporter in November 2010.

Hemsworth will appear in the thriller Shadow Runner in 2011, Sony Pictures reported, but the film has yet to be released. Hemsworth was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that year as the superhero Thor. Thor's first film in the series was in 2011. He and castmate Tom Hiddleston, who later appeared in Loki, were auditioned for the role, which Hemsworth said he grew 20 pounds of muscle. Thor was the 15th highest-grossing film of 2011. Hemsworth's portrayal of the God of Thunder was lauded by Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times, and the film received rave reviews, and Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times praised Hemsworth's portrayal of the God of Thunder. Hemsworth resurrects the role as one of the six superheroes in The Avengers (2012), alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark / Iron Man, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers / Captain America, Michael Evans' Natasha Romanova / Black Widow, and Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton / Hawkeye — all of whom appeared in the film The Avengers (2012) as one of the six superheroes, including Kevin Hartman /Hulk The film, which grossed more than US$1.5 billion worldwide, was a critical and commercial success. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised the ensemble cast for their on-screen chemistry.

Hemsworth shot The Cabin in the Woods shortly after the film's debut, but it wasn't announced until 2012. Curt Vaughan's portrayal of Alpha male jock Curt Vaughan by Alison Foreman of Mashable was praised as his "most" role to date, earning positive feedback. Hemsworth appeared as the Huntsman in the film Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). Despite being a commercial success with a worldwide audience of US$396 million, it received mixed feedback. Critics were skeptical of Hemsworth and Stewart's on-screen chemistry, while Wired's Angela Watercutter thought the characters were "not fully fleshed-out." In the 2012 Red Dawn remake, Hemsworth appeared as Jed Eckert after MGM discovered dailies footage of a scene from The Cabin in the Woods; he was cast as Thor two days after being cast in Red Dawn. The film was a box-office bomb, grossing only US$50 million against a US$65 million production budget, and received no feedback.

Hemsworth appeared in Ron Howard's sports drama Rush as 1976 Formula One World Champion James Hunt. The film was critically praised and became a box office hit, grossing US$98.2 million against a budget of US$38 million. Henry Barnes of The Guardian was wowed by Hemsworth's appearance, praising the actor for delivering the "superb script" with "some mastery." Hemsworth revived Thor's role in Thor: The Dark World (2013) later this year. Despite being a commercial success with a worldwide gross of US$644.6 million, the film was the lowest-rated film in the MCU family on the review website Rotten Tomatoes at 66% approval rating. Critics lauded Hemsworth and Hiddleston's chemistry; Ben Child of The Guardian wrote, "Thanks to Hiddleston and Hemsworth's incredible collective dynamism, Thor: The Dark World is far from a franchise killer."

Hemsworth appeared in director Michael Mann's action thriller Blackhat in 2015, opposite Viola Davis. At the box office, the film was bombed and was poorly received. The film's casting of Hemsworth as a hacker was a significant part of many commentators; Christy Lemire of the Chicago Sun-Times said, "Anyone who makes [their] way in the world sitting in front of a computer screen all day is not going to look as hunky as Hemsworth." Later, Hemsworth confessed to being dissatisfied with his appearance: "I didn't like what I did in the film," he said. "It just looked flat, and it was also an attempt to do what I thought people might have liked to see." However, I don't think I'm good in that space." For the fourth time in the sequel to The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor reprised his role as Thor. Hemsworth also received the People's Choice Awards for Favorite Action Movie Actor in addition to the film's positive reviews and worldwide grossing of over US$1.4 billion. In November 2014, Hemsworth shot a scene as an extra, not as his character Kim Hyde. On May 19, 2015, he appeared in the episode in which he appeared.

He co-starred in the comedy film Vacation, alongside Ed Helms, in a revival of the film franchise that first starred Chevy Chase. Leslie Mann was nominated for the MTV Movie Awards for Best Kiss. Owen Chase played first mate Owen Chase in his last film, In the Heart of the Sea, based on Nathaniel Philbrick's book of the same name. In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he said that to prepare for the role of starving sailors. The cast was put on a 500–600 calories a day to shed weight. Critics were split on Heart of the Sea, grossing US$93 million against a US$100 million budget, but Hemsworth was nominated for Choice Movie Actor: Action at the 18th Teen Choice Awards.

Hemsworth reprised Eric the Huntsman in The Huntsman: Winter's War, alongside Jessica Chastain, who played his love interest. Oliver Lyttelton wrote an article for IndieWire, criticizing Hemsworth and Chastain's on-screen chemistry, saying, "they're both struggling against accents they are obviously not familiar with, exhibiting zero chemistry, and frankly appearing to be in different films." Compared to its predecessor, the film disappointed, grossing only US$165 million. Hemsworth appeared in the reboot Ghostbusters film, as Kevin the receptionist. Both critically and commercially, the film was dissatisfied, but Hemsworth was praised for "delivering] the most enjoyable" by Metro's Caroline Westbrook, who went on to win the Kids' Choice Awards for Favorite Movie Actor.

Hemsworth appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, released in the United States on November 3rd and then in both the third and fourth Avengers films, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Both three films were a critical and commercial success. "Hemsworth's charisma holds [Thor: Ragnarok] together as it threatens to spin apart," RogerEbert.com's Matt Zoller Seitz said of Hemsworth's appearance to Cary Grant. Hemsworth received the Teen Choice Awards for Best Sci-Fi Movie Actor. While Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal praised Thor "as the opulent, exuberant comic actor he was supposed to be," while Hemsworth praises him in the MCU Infinity Saga finale "as the graceful, exuberant comic actor he was destined to be," as Thor transforms, alarmingly and graciously into a beer-bellied apparition that could pass for Jeff Lebowski.

Hemsworth appeared in a spin-off of the Men in Black film The Men in Black series was also titled Men in Black: International. The film grossed US$253 million globally and received generally critical feedback from critics who chastised the "lackluster action and forgettable plot," although Hemsworth and co-star Tessa Thompson's chemistry was lauded. He appeared in Extraction on Netflix, reuniting him with the Russo brothers, who served as producers, for the next year. The film debuted in 90 million households in its first month of release, beating Netflix's viewership record, which was previously held by Bird Box. In the fourth film, Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth reprised his role as Thor. Filming in February 2021 in Australia began in February 2021 and was released on June 23, 2022.
