Life and career
Kenzari was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on January 16, 1983, to a Tunisian family. His father was a builder, while his mother was a housewife. He was mainly interested in football as a youth when a teenage girl he was seeing called them up to audition for the Dutch version of the musical Chicago. Kenzari graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2009. He was recruited by Toneelgroep Amsterdam after graduating, allowing him to tour in Moscow, London, Vienna, and New York City with the group.
Since 2008, Kenzari has appeared in films and TV series in his native Dutch. He received a Golden Calf for Best Actor at the Netherlands Film Festival in 2013 for his role in the feature film Wolf (2013). He trained for more than a year to play the role of kickboxer Majid. He was also on the cover of Dutch Men's Health in 2013 with his toned body. Critics also lauded his role in the film, with Variety naming him as a "International Star You Should Know" in the film. Kenzari received a Shooting Stars Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014.
He appeared in the English-language films Collide, Ben-Hur, and The Promise in 2016, resulting in The Hollywood Reporter naming him as one of the top "30 International Breakout Talents of 2016." In Disney's live-action adaptation of Aladdin, Kenzari played villain Jafar in 2019. He gained international fame after playing the role with mainstream media, earning him the nickname "hot Jafar." Kenzari made headlines in July 2020 when he appeared in The Old Guard as one of the film's protagonists. Kenzari was in February 2021 in a role for the upcoming film Black Adam.
