Ashley Walters (born 30 June 1982), also known as Asher D., is a British rapper, songwriter, and actor best known for his role as Ricky in Bullet Boy (2004) and his lead role as Dushane in Top Boy (2004) and his role as Antoine in Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2004).

Early life

Walters was born in Peckham, south-east London, to Jamaican parents. He was raised by his mother, Pamela Case, a local government officer. From the age of four, he attended St. Georges CE Primary School in Camberwell, the British School of Education. He then went to Pimlico School, now Pimlico Academy.

Walters appeared in several stage performances after enrolling in classes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

Personal life

Walters and his ex-girlfriend have three children. He married in 2013 and had a daughter in 2014. They had a boy in 2016 and had a son. He also has two young children.

Walters was discovered to be carrying a loaded Brocock air pistol modified to fire live ammunition in July 2001, following an alteration with a traffic warden. He was arrested and sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institution in 2002. He was released after nine months of detention for a total of nine months. He was fined £600 in Aberdeen on 31 March 2014 after he admitted to assaulting a security guard. At Holyhead, Anglesey, he was fined £1250 for smoking marijuana. Walters was fined £1000 in May 2016 for using threatening words and conduct towards employees at the Hilton Hotel in Islington. Walters has argued that his father's absence when he was growing up contributed to his criminal behavior.

Music career

Walters joined So Solid Crew, where under the pseudone Asher D alias Asher D he appeared and acted as lyricist, especially on their number one hit "21 Seconds."

In Memory of the Street Fighter, the group's split, was released in 2006. In 2008, he released The Appetizer, a 12-track album co-produced by Laurence Ezra. Walters signed a recording deal with SK Records in early 2012. On July 29, 2012, his single "How You Like Me Now" was released, followed by "Your Love" which featured vocals from Alesha Dixon.

Acting career

Walters is also an actor, who appears under his real name, Ashley Walters. At the age of 10, Omar appeared in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and as Andy in Grange Hill at the age of 14. Ricky, who had just been released from jail and back to living a normal life, was a part for which Walters was named Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards. He appeared in 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' in 2005.

He appeared in the film Stormbreaker and Danny in Life and Lyrics in 2006, for which he has received many accolades. In 2007, he appeared in WZ, alongside Selma Blair and Melissa George, as well as in Sugarhouse. In the BBC Three drama series West 10 LDN, he played Lacey. In five episodes of BBC TV drama Hustle, he played Billy Bond. He appeared on MTV's Top Buzzer and appeared as Al B in the 2006 film House of 9 with Dennis Hopper.

Walters appeared on stage at the Royal National Theatre in Roy Williams' Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads in 2002, and at the Royal Court Theatre in Levi David Addai's Oxford Street in 2008. He appears in another film, "Tuef," on Tuesday. He appeared in Bola Agbaje's play Off the Endz at the Royal Court Theatre in February and March 2010.

He appeared in ITV's The Bill and firefighting drama London's Burning. In an episode titled "Toilet Books," comedian Stewart Lee referenced his Grange Hill history and autobiography on the BBC Two show Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle. Walters appeared on BBC TV in 2009's adaptation of Andrea Levy's Small Island and as Jack Holt in the short-lived drama Outcasts, both in February and March 2011.

Walters gave one of Shakespeare's most popular speeches, "But soft, what light comes through yonder window breaks?" Walters said for BBC Learning's "Off By Heart Shakespeare" — "But soft, what light comes from yonder window breaks?" From Romeo and Juliet. Walters appeared in Demons Never Die in October 2011. In Channel 4's four-part drama Top Boy, he appeared Dushane from October 31. He appeared in the BBC drama Inside Men in February 2012. In the second series of Top Boy, Walters reprised his role as the main protagonist Dushane.

When he tweeted a picture of himself in his costume in his trailer with the word "space," he got into trouble with the producers on the first day of filming Doctor Who's "Journey to the center of the TARDIS." The photo was emailed right away and was promptly deleted.

Walters was given the British Urban Film Festival honorary award from Lisa Maffia & Sheila Nortley at the BT Tower in London in 2017 for 25 years of outstanding contribution to film and television. Walters reprised his role in Top Boy in 2019 as Dushane, Netflix's new generation of the drama and the fourth series of the drama in 2022.
