Abhay Deol (also known as Abhay Singh Deol) is an Indian actor and producer who works mainly in Hindi language films.

He began acting in theater performances at his school at a young age.

Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy Socha Na Tha made Deol's on-screen debut in 2005. Deol earned accolades for his roles in films including Manorama Six Feet Under (2007), which earned him the Best Actor Award at the Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival, and the commercially successful Oye Lucky!

He made his debut appearance in Anurag Kashyap's critically and commercially profitable Dev.D, a modern-day adaptation of Bengali classic novel Devdas, in 2009.

Deol's success brought greater attention and even praise from film critics. Deol started out acting in independent films early in his career, but that changed in 2011 when he starred in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, a road film that went on to become one of Bollywood's top-grossing films.

His role in the film was well received, earning him his first nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Deol has worked in commercially successful films including the drama film Raanjhana (2013) and the romantic comedy Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016), as well as producing in independent films including the drama Road, Movie (2010) and the war film Chakravyuh (2012). Early life

Deol was born in a Sikh family to Ajit Singh Deol and Usha Deol. He is the uncle of actor Dharmendra Nharmendra and the cousin of Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol. In a Rediff interview, Abhay Deol said he is interested in acting not because of his father but because he was involved in theatre from childhood. "I took the plunge at 18," says the author. Because I didn't want to leave my education to get into films, it took me ten years."

Deol made his film debut in Socha Na Tha, a romantic comedy starring Ayesha Takia, in 2005. Critical praises were mostly favorable, and the film was an average grosser at the box-office. Deol's role in the film was well-received. Ahista Ahista, Soha Ali Khan's second film role, was in 2006. Honeymoon Travels Pvt, Deol's first release in 2007 was the ensemble comedy drama Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., which became a box-office behemoth. Deol had two more launches this year, including the crime film Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and the thriller Manorama Six Feet Under. At the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York City, the latter received the Best Film Award, and Deol received the Best Actor Award.

Oye Lucky, Deol's sole release of 2008, was a dark comedy film. Lucky Oye! Lovinder Singh, a compulsive thief, was the film's director, Dibakar Banerjee. Lucky, and the film's plot follows his exploits.

The acclaim was met with critical acclaim, but it fell heavily because of the timing of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which contributed to widespread fear of crowded places.

In 2009, Deol's breakthrough role in Anurag Kashyap's 2009 neo-noir film Dev.D, a modern-day translation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic Bengali romance book Devdas, appeared in a neo-noir film Devdas. Kashyap's film was born during a talk with Deol, where the former spoke about a man visiting a Los Angeles strip joint like a "modern day Devdas." Dev.D. The distinctive visual style, experimental soundtrack, and an innovative narrative structure of any Bollywood film attracted a lot of attention due to its unique visual style, experimental soundtrack, and a new narrative structure that was unprecedented for any Bollywood film. In a 5 out of 5 star review for The Times of India, Nikhat Kazmi rated Deol's appearance in the film as a "class act." In Road, Movie, Deol appeared alongside Tannishtha Chatterjee. In the film Tera Kya Hoga Johnny in 2010, Deol made a cameo appearance for an Item number. Deol's Forbidden Films production company was born in 2009, with Junction being the film to be picked up by the banner.

In 2010, he played Arjun Burman, an investment banker opposite Sonam Kapoor's eponymous lead in the ensemble romantic comedy Aisha, which also starred Ira Dubey, Cyrus Sahukar, Amrita Puri, Anand Tiwari, Arunoday Singh, and Lisa Haydon. Deol appeared in Zoya Akhtar's ensemble comedy-drama road film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011, alongside Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, and Kalki Koechlin. The story follows three friends who have been inseparable since childhood, with each of them playing Kabir, an architect. They set off to Spain on a bachelor voyage for Kabir, who is likely to marry Natasha, an interior designer portrayed by Koechlin. For the film, which was shot in Spain, he trained to be a deep dive diver. The film debuted to widespread critical acclaim and earned 1.53 billion (US$19 million) globally, outstying Dhoom 2 in the worldwide gross, becoming the ninth-highest worldwide grosser of all time for a Bollywood film at the time of its release. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara received Best Film among other awards, and Deol was named Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.

In 2012, Deol had two releases, both of which were political thrillers – Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai and Prakash Jha's Chakravyuh. Deol appeared as a police informant in the latter film but was later involved in the Naxalite movement. Film commentators gave the film mixed praise. Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin were co-starring in Shanghai on the French novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos. Deol's performance as a bureaucrat/IAS officer attracted acclaim, and the film opened to warm reviews, and Deol's role as a bureaucrat/IAS officer earned significant praise. "He wears his inscrutability thickly and delivers a good show," Raja Sen of Rediff.com applauded. The film was a surprise hit, grossing over 200,000 (US$2.5 million) in India. Major Suraj Singh, a character based on Major Shaitan Singh, was portrayed in the Disney Channel original film Spin "The War in the Hills" in 2021, wherein he played Arvind Kumar, the father of the protagonist Rhea Kumar, a teenage girl who discovers a passion for making DJ mixes and crime comedy film Velle.
