He appeared on the Golden Globe-winning series The Shield the following year. The World Trade Center based Oliver Stone's film based on the September 11, 2001 attacks. He appeared in Alejandro González Irrritu's film Babel, as well as a small part. This gives him the rare distinction of appearing in three consecutive Oscar-nominated films.

Pea appeared in the HBO film Walkout as Sal Castro, a Mexican-American high school teacher who compelled a group of East Los Angeles high school students to protest for Chicano rights.

In Shooter (2006) as new FBI agent Nick Memphis, he appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg. In 2009, he was a mall security guard alongside Seth Rogen in Jody Hill's Observe and Report.

In End of Watch, he co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal as a Los Angeles police officer. He started filming César Chávez, a biopic about American labor leader César Chávez, who founded the United Farm Workers in the same year. Chávez plays Pea. In the World War II-set action film Fury (2014), he appeared alongside Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, and Jon Bernthal, and he played Luis in Ant-Man (2015).

Pea appeared in 12 Strong alongside Chris Hemsworth. In his human form, he appeared in A Wrinkle in Time, where he played the main antagonist, The IT, in his human form (known as "Red"). Pea had joined Narcos' cast for its forthcoming fourth season in December 2017. The fourth season of Narcos: Mexico would be a new series, with Pea playing as DEA agent Kiki Camarena.

In the FX animated comedy Chozen, Pea voiced Ricky. Tito was the word he used in Turbo. He also performed for the character Marguerite (in the episode "Hot Water") of the famous animated film American Dad.

Pea formed the Los Angeles rock band Nico Vega in 2005, named after his mother, Nicolasa. On the Billboard Hot Rock Songs Chart, there are 26 songs on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs Chart. Pea appeared in a video made for Midlake's song "Bethel Woods," which premiered on Jan. 12, 2022.
