Frederick James Prinze Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 8, 1976. Prinze Jr. and his father, actor and stand-up comedian Freddie Prinze, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on January 29, 1977, after which Prinze Jr. and his mother moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised Catholic, accepts his Latino ancestry (as his paternal grandmother was Puerto Rican, from Boquerón) and is fluent in Spanish. His mother is of Italian descent. Since his dying grandfather told him he had to "fix" what his father had "f'd up," he was inspired to enter show business by the age of 15. Neil Patrick Harris, a boy from high school, was excited about acting, and he decided to do it. Prinze came from high school to Los Angeles to audition for television roles.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, a Prinze married actress, was born in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, on September 1, 2002. The couple met several years ago when filming I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) began in 2000 and became engaged in April 2001. They appeared in Scooby-Doo (2002), Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), Happily N'Ever After (2006), and Star Wars Rebels (2014-2020). Gellar also appeared on Prinze's film She's All That. Prinze appeared on ABC television series Family Matters as a guest star in 1995. He appeared on a few shows and made-for-TV films before he made his motion picture debut in To Gillian on her 37th birthday in 1996. Prinze appeared in youth-oriented films in subsequent years. I know what you did last summer (1997) and its sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) made him known to teenage audiences. In the United States, his first leading role, She's All That (1999), earned $63 million.
