Isaacson began his work in journalism at The Sunday Times in London, followed by a stint with the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He joined Time magazine in 1978 and spent time as the magazine's political reporter, national editor, and editor of new media before becoming the magazine's 14th editor in 1996.

In July 2001, Isaacson became CNN's chairman and CEO, replacing Tom Johnson, and CNN was only two months later led by CNN through the 9/11 events. Isaacson, who was first elected to CNN, attracted attention for seeking Republican Party leaders' positions on Capitol Hill in response to reports that CNN broadcast content was biased to Republicans or conservatives. In Roll Call magazine, he said, "I was trying to reach out to a lot of Republicans who think CNN hasn't been as willing to reporting Republicans, and I wanted to hear their concerns." Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) group chastised Isaacson's behavior, which included endowing conservative politicians with sway over CNN, according to the firm's spokesperson.

In January 2003, he declared that he would step down as president at CNN to become president of the Aspen Institute. Jim Walton as the president of CNN has been named Isaacson.

Isaacson served as the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute from 2003 to 2018, when he announced that he would resign to become a historian of history at Tulane University and an advisory partner at Perella Weinberg Partners in New York City. www.dailymail.co.uk, December 14, 2023
Elon Musk, the billionaire, is expected to expand his city's plans after the pandemic in Austin, Texas, in 2020. According to the October 2022 application, the school will use a traditional curriculum alongside hands-on learning experiences such as simulations, case studies, fabrication/design studies, and labs.' Musk's university will seek to recruit a "experienced faculty" and college accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, according to the university's official filing for tax-exempt status.
